To ask where ethnic minority Brits holiday in U.K.?

I know I'm going to be flamed for asking this, but I can hardly ask irl!

I live in south devon in a very popular holiday area. The area is very white middle class. I noticed a few years ago that almost all the people who holiday here are also white Brits. Since noticing this I keep wondering where all the ethnic minorities British people go on holiday.

I travel to other south westerly holiday resorts a lot with my work (hotel industry) and it seems to be the case there too.

If 82% of the population are white, why are at least 95% (a rough estimate from looking out at the harbour the last few days) of grockles white?

We don't "holiday" in the uk. I find a lot of people stare even if I go to the countrysides in my city. When I drive through small villages I get a head turn from pedestrians (and not because I'm so hot!). It's awkward.

We do however spend a night or 2 in Bournemouth because it's quite multicultural and I have black/Asian friends who go to Cornwall and Butlins as again there's a blend of people.

I don't like standing out like a sore thumb tbh.

sadiemm2 · 30/08/2017 22:24

We holiday in Norfolk and Wales often. Have been stared at on occasion, but we are a mixed family, 'ethnically ambiguous ", I'm mildly disabled so have random sticks and splints... And my kids are fucking gorgeous Wink The " where are you from " conversation is always fun... Grin

youarenotkiddingme · 30/08/2017 22:24

Some kids at school told my ds to go back to where he came from Shock

He's actually white British just happened to be born aboard as me and his dad lived there!

Jakeyboy1 · 30/08/2017 22:25

In Devon two weeks ago and was generally quite mixed. Mainly white/Asian/Chinese. This was the Torbay area.

My BIL is black and has a disdain for U.K. Based holidays but I think that's just him!

minoandolphin · 30/08/2017 22:28

Clueless really? Was in Torquay the other day thinking the exact opposite, that it was about 100 times more diverse than it was when I was a kid!

intergalacticbrexitdisco · 30/08/2017 22:29

We go to DH home country in S America

EssCee · 30/08/2017 22:30

Hello, ethnic minority person here!

As a member of the ethnic minorites (!), I like to go to the Lake District, London and other cities on city breaks, Centre Parcs... the Cotswolds... In fact, anywhere that non-ethnic minorities go to.... strangely.

I can say, though, that I haven't gone to anywhere in the South West on holiday.

jamie2 · 30/08/2017 22:39

We were in Southwold this sunmer and didn't see any non white families. The seaside vibe was like a throwback to the 1950s. We're from London so the whole thing seemed weird.

Hasthebellgone · 30/08/2017 22:40

This ethnic has just got back from the Cotswalds Hmm

missmollyhadadolly · 30/08/2017 22:44

Yeah I'm an EMP and I'll go anywhere. I love Cornwall, Somerset, beaches in Sussex, Bournemouth. Lake District, Peak District, Yorkshire, Highlands, Wales, Ireland.

I think if someone has a problem with my skin colour then that's their problem.

jamie2 · 30/08/2017 22:51

Missmolly I think you gave missed the op's point

sonlypuppyfat · 30/08/2017 22:54

Last year in Llandudno it was full of Jewish people all in their traditional dress. This year there are loads of Muslims

Nuttynoo · 30/08/2017 22:54

I'm the only ethnic minority in my circle who holidays in the UK. Everybody else goes abroad at least twice - the States/Mexico/Cuba tends to be popular at the moment.

grandOlejukeofYork · 30/08/2017 22:54

Being stared at when you leave the capital is no fun and horrid for the kids

What, like in Birmingham or Leeds or Manchester or so many other places all with large amounts of people of all colours and types?

Nuttynoo · 30/08/2017 22:56

Leicester has more non-white people than white, it's official now. So white people can go there to have a go at what being a minority feels like. Hmm

SnickersWasAHorse · 30/08/2017 23:41

I'm having an issue with number of people feeling that they are being stared at 'outside London'. Granted I am white so I guess I don't get this but there really are lots of non white people outside London.

Oh and I was in Walberswick last week. Clearly this is where all the 'ethnic' people go rather than going over to Southwold.

bonfireheart · 30/08/2017 23:54

weird coincidence that there's someone on twitter today talking about lack of BME people in Devon n Cornwall & using that to attack Nadiya from bake off

JayDot500 · 30/08/2017 23:55

I'm black, and I love holidaying in the UK! But I am reluctant to because I hate sticking out. I've recently visited the Cotswold's with DH and DS, the people were lovely. That trip gave me confidence to consider other places (I've always been a bit apprehensive about going too far north or south of London tbh).

My husband (also black) would rather holiday outside of the UK. He doesn't 'do' active/outdoorsy stuff and he views UK (non city) tourism as very active and outdoorsy Hmm. He works in London, so when we do visit other cities in the UK, it's just one prolonged shrug from him.

bonfireheart · 30/08/2017 23:57

As an "ethnic minority" I go where I can afford :) been to Peak District, Lake District, Manchester, Ripley, Filey, Harrogate, London, Worcester, Warwick, Stratford, leamington etc. Love holidaying in UK but sometimes it's cheaper to go abroad!

Amd724 · 31/08/2017 00:13

I'm a black American, but I've lived in the UK for six years (!!!). I haven't done much traveling around the UK, if I have time off I'm going somewhere warm (I live in Yorkshire) or I go home for a month to visit family. It's nothing against the UK, well, sort of yes. It rains here. A LOT. I like visiting a place where I don't have to worry about spending most of my holiday inside. Plus, my skin really needs some sun after a while. My mom told me I look pale....

As well, I echo many of the minorities who say they're stared at. I'm stared at where I live in York. There aren't many ethnic minorities coming up to York for a visit, and very few go even further north. I get it though, you stick out like a sore thumb and people are constantly asking you where you really came from. It's exhausting. It's largely ignorant people (and you must be ignorant to think its a perfectly reasonable thing to ask someone where they're really from) but its a lot to deal with on a holiday. Do places like Spain, Greece, and Italy have problems with race? Of course, but I'm sure as hell not stared at my entire holiday. And when we do a city break to London to visit my hubby's family, I'm definitely not stared at. We go where we feel welcome.

My hubby is white English, he doesn't enjoy many of the visits to the countryside, because TBH he gets bored. He grew up in London, and I've begged him for a visit to the Lake District, but he cannot understand what you'd do there for the entire time that's so amazing. He'd prefer we go visit my family in the US as he LOVES it. We're planning a trip to Canada next year once I've had our first child. He just doesn't see the point in spending his precious annual leave holidaying in his own country. He also doesn't understand the allure of sitting on an all inclusive resort in Spain/Italy/etc. as he says he needs some variety in his holiday (multiple cities, countries, etc.). Yet he totally understands why Americans rarely leave their own. There's simply a lot to see, and its incredibly diverse. We went to Atlanta this year, plus Las Vegas and it was like two entirely different countries. We're doing Chicago (my home) and then New Orleans early next year before flying up to Canada and he's really excited. But you won't catch him sitting on a beach in Florida for days, and he's intrigued by rural areas of the US but doesn't plan to spend more than a day or so there. He couldn't make it a full holiday.

IvorHughJarrs · 31/08/2017 00:32

We went to Blackpool a few weeks back and there were lots of big Asian family groups there. I don't know if they were staying there or day-trippers but there were loads

We commented that it was lovely to see people having such a good time, it seemed to be the kind of day out my friends and I enjoyed as kids. They had bags of packed food, the children were paddling and they were all laughing and chatting. Looked like the best kind of day out

stumblymonkeyagain · 31/08/2017 00:34

I have lots of African, black and Indian friends...I'd say 80% of them visit extended family back in Africa/India at least once a year.

The other 20% tend to go to more exotic locations as they're high earners and like to travel.

Mittens1969 · 31/08/2017 00:41

I have a Polish lady who comes to clean for me, she's off to Portugal for her holiday. We by contrast went to Devon. I guess they want to get away from the rain when they go on holiday.

HiJenny35 · 31/08/2017 01:12

Not silly I was actually wondering the same! We are from London and went away to Devon this summer for two weeks and all but one family where we were staying were white. Bit odd to see when you are from London.

marmiteloversunite · 31/08/2017 01:12

Perhaps they are too smart to sit in the awful traffic jams we seem to endure every summer in Devon and Cornwall. Nobody will be able to get in or out in a few years time! Confused
