AIBU to ask how to deal with all these bastard spiders?

Wise MNetters help me! Severely scared of spiders, have found 3 in house over last 2days. Tonight it was huge and made my heart race for about 30mins. Desperately trying not to react as don't want DS1 aged 3 to develop phobia. Please help with any tips.

I usually use a big glass container (cane with my hand held blender) to trap it. Then I slowly drag it across the floor to the door (slowly because every time I move the container, the spider moves and it moves so goddamn fast I have a tiny heart attack).

We have a spider catcher. The DCs love using it and chucking the spider outside - I may have led them to believe spiders love being outside rather than inside.

MummaTwinkleToes · 29/08/2017 00:03

Ttbb I used to catch them with a glass and paper but now they always seem to be somewhere like in the folds of net curtains where I can't do that. I can't kill them as I have irrational belief that if I kill one more will appear to avenge fallen spider soldier! Blush

MarmaladeAtkinsX where can I get this spider catcher? Desperate to try anything!

Conkers seem to deter them - I hope!

MummaTwinkleToes · 29/08/2017 00:13

Thereallochnessmonster I will try anything! Smile

Lakeland sell spray bottles of a quite marvellous stuff called 'Spider Stopper'. It is basically chestnut essence in a spray form, Completely safe for humans.

Spray it round doors and windows/holes in wall wherever. It seems to be pretty effective as we rarely get them now. Good luck!

justinhawkinsnavalfluff · 29/08/2017 02:05

I hate spiders and nearly crashed my car because of one. The spray sounds like a godsend. It seems to be discontinued on the lakeland website but amazon seems to have some. Definitely going to try it!!

BeauMirchoff · 29/08/2017 03:11

Peppermint oil is supposed to keep those bastards at bay.

tealandteal · 29/08/2017 03:43

I put peppermint oil on the doorframes and window vents where I guess they come in and didn't get hardly any last year. Time to top up I think!

justilou · 29/08/2017 05:06

Lemon oil is great too. I use it around my doors and windows so the little buggers don't want to explore inside. (Plus it smells divine) Once they're in, it's a bit harder to get rid of them.

Amee1992x · 29/08/2017 05:34

I have those plug ins that "give off" sound waves to stop them, weather they work or not I'm not sure. Iv had about 3 this week. I just squash them with a shoe

LazySusan11 · 29/08/2017 06:16

I thought that the spiders were already in your house not coming from the outside? Hairy bastards I hope it's really really cold soon.

BoffinMum · 29/08/2017 06:21

The vacuum cleaner is your friend.

MarmaladeAtkinsX · 29/08/2017 06:48

mumma it just appeared in our house (DP is not a fan of spiders) if you search for spider catchers you'll find loads. The ones with suction are rubbish though, vaccuum cleaners are much better.

KinkyAfro · 29/08/2017 07:46

Peppermint oil, few drops in a spray bottle with water, spray around windows and any nooks/crannies. Works a treat and is cheap as chips

SukiTheDog · 29/08/2017 08:53

Bettaware SpiderStop. I don't work for them but have bought this for several years. It doesn't harm spiders but, you spray it along skirting boards/window openings/airbricks etc. Smells of crushed cloves.

I used to get the great big, hairy legged, fat bodied, striped bastards from Oct onward. I can honestly say, we had one brute last year. Great big fucker, it was, but... we used to have them running about like they owned the place 😊

It's good stuff.

SukiTheDog · 29/08/2017 08:55

I did buy a spider catcher thing, a suction one but, I'd get myself in a right lather waiting for them to appear. Now, they just never appear.

FredTheArmadillo · 29/08/2017 09:03

Glass over the top (or giant vase depending on the size!!), slide thick envelope or card underneath for sturdiness, move glass slightly until spider runs up to the other end, tip over using envelope as lid to secure, bolt to nearest window or door and fling as far as I can!! Hate them too but don't like to kill them if I don't have to.

I have found that at this time of year, it's better to keep windows and doors closed, which is a PITA when it's warm but better than seeing them running across the floors and up the walls when I'm lying in bed!!

AnarchyKitty · 29/08/2017 09:09

I've got the biggest fucking spider in the history of the world in my hallway.
I hate spider season.😭

MakeItRain · 29/08/2017 09:14

Cats are your friend! We have two young cats and seem to live in a place overrun with spiders at this time of year. We often wake to the joyful sight of ex monster spiders in various places in the house. If I see them first I'll try to catch them and put them out, despite a horrible fear of them. But I don't feel guilty when the cats dispose of them overnight as it's just instinct for them!

metalmum15 · 29/08/2017 09:26

I always use a glass with paper underneath. They don't bother me too much although I really don't like massive ones. Just remember, we need spiders to eat all the horrible little beasties and bugs we'd be overrun with otherwise!

goldensyrupisshit · 29/08/2017 09:53

I think they're early this year as normally I get conkers and place them in the corners of the room and that deters them. So far we've had 2 massive ones the 2nd one that Mrgolden tried to dispose of ran out him when he took him outside and as he was making a beeline back to the house Mrgolden squished him Confused

WildCherryBlossom · 29/08/2017 10:14

There's one the size of a fist on the landing now. Making me feel sick. And I have so much to do today, I don't want to have to keep passing it. I'm hoping one of the cats eats it Blush

AnarchyKitty · 29/08/2017 10:38

Mine has brought a friend now. My cats are ignoring them. They are much more interested in catching craneflies by the amount of bodyless legs I'm finding on the windowsills.
