The new arthritis care advert - did that Dad just tell his ex wife he couldn't take their son?

So - the Dad has just got out of jail.
Gets a job
Plays football with son
Tells his ex wife ( I guess) that he can't take son on Thursday because he's got a job.
Can't get up because of back pain
Loses job

Tag Line - arthritis affects us all.

I wonder if his ex wife had planned to work on Thursday and maybe he should have discussed it first?

An interesting advert.

Its a shit advert.

I dont get what the jail bit has to do with anything.

Libitina · 27/08/2017 21:42

That advert REALLY annoyed me. He couldn't ring his new employer?

Tigresswoods · 27/08/2017 21:42

It's a really weird advert for sure!

orlantina · 27/08/2017 21:44

It was the fact that he just told his ex that he couldn't do Thursday.

I thought it was just me. "Arthritis affects us all" (or something). So why choose a man in prison?

Sandinshoes · 27/08/2017 22:04

Arthritis affects me and I hate that advert.

britbat23 · 27/08/2017 22:15

The point of the ad is that he's desperate to make a new start and doing all the right things but, tragically, is being held back by his arthritis.

sadiemm2 · 27/08/2017 22:16

Jeez, I have rheumatoid arthritis, and I can't understand what this ad is trying to say.

Worriedrose · 27/08/2017 22:17

It's one of the oddest adverts I've ever seen

Sashkin · 27/08/2017 22:21

What a weird advert!

Most back pain is muscular, not arthritic (if they'd said hip, knee or hand pain, fine).

Most people who are able to run about playing football, but totally unable to look after their kids, work, or meet their responsibilities are not suffering from some kind of mysteriously selective arthritis, but from fecklessness.

Maybe this was a low-value campaign for the ad agency, and so the intern wrote the storyboard.

orlantina · 27/08/2017 22:22

I understand the advert - it just pissed me off that he didn't discuss with his ex. He just told her...

I can see that on AIBU.

My ex has just come out of prison. He just told me that he can't do Thursdays because he is working. AIBU to think he should have checked the days with me:

Update: He's lost his job. AIBU to think he should have rung his employer.

Worriedrose · 27/08/2017 22:23

To be fair we are talking about it
So maybe it's worked!

mum11970 · 27/08/2017 22:25

Think it may mean the arthritis doesn't only affect him, it also has a knock on effect for his ex wife, child and employer. It is a rubbish ad though.

HemanOrSheRa · 27/08/2017 22:26

I saw this advert last night - I thought I'd gone completely insane as I didn't understand a bit of it Confused. I am so relieved it's not just me!

Maelstrop · 27/08/2017 22:29

I absolutely hated the advert, I mean wtaf?! All that bollocks leading up to Arthritis affects us all?! Utter nonsense, message was lost, as I knew it would be due to the whole back story, dad done bad, lives in a hostel, gets job, loses job.

Mummaofboys · 27/08/2017 22:39

The advert has obviously worked because everybody is talking about it....

littlemissneela · 27/08/2017 22:47

I had no idea what the ad was about when it came on. Thought it was for some job rehabilitation thing. Its good arthritis is being mentioned and put out there, but not like this. They can film my 17 year old struggling to get upstairs or not being able to pick things up off the floor due to her JIA, and use that in an ad.

CockacidalManiac · 27/08/2017 22:49

It's a seriously weird advert. It's so random, like that wedding one for chewing gum. It's like the agency keeps a stock supply of shit ideas, puts the brand on at the end and thinks 'that'll do'.
I blame lunchtime drinking.

CockacidalManiac · 27/08/2017 22:51

I've never understood this approach. Gerald Ratner got everyone talking about his jewellery too, didn't he? Didn't do him much good.

orlantina · 27/08/2017 22:54

Maybe someone should do a similar ad for Government benefits cuts

Or not paying child maintenance...

I think Timpsons has a good record of employing ex-cons. Interesting that they chose a cobbler as an employer in the ad. Nowt to do with arthritis but a bit of research had gone on. But agree, a confusing ad.

Gorgosparta · 28/08/2017 06:47

He just told me that he can't do Thursdays because he is working. AIBU to think he should have checked the days with me:

And maybe they had an ad hoc arrangement and she knew full well, that he may get a job at short notice. Maybe they had discusses it at length. Maybe she doesnt work. You can go on with that forever.

coconuttella · 28/08/2017 07:21

Perhaps, but if he's just come out of prison, presumably his ex has had childcare arrangements in place for Thursday for at least the duration of his time inside.... and as an ex-con, if you're offered a job, you take it!

jpscloud · 29/08/2017 16:05

I've just seen the ad, and was as confused as you guys... did a search to see if other people are talking about it and what they made of it. After thinking for a bit, I wonder if the ad is saying arthritis itself is the prison?

Mulberry72 · 29/08/2017 17:00

I have severe Psoriatic Arthritis and the advert confused me a bit, not so much the bit with his daughter, more the bit with him not turning up for his new job. When I was employed I really struggled to get out of bed in the mornings (DH had to lift me up, still does) but I could always manage to reach my phone to text or ring my boss to let him know I wasn't going in. I had to finish work altogether in 2014 because of my Arthritis, it's a fucking bastard Angry
