Really fucked off with Euro exchange rate

We have been going on holiday self-catering to the same place in Europe for over 10 years.

This year everything feels prohibitively expensive - to the point where it is really inhibiting what we can choose to do.

We are here for 2 weeks and it's really hard as family of 4 (with 2 teenagers) to spend less than £100/euros a day on activities/eating out.

Not in a beach resort type place, so taking a picnic to the beach for the day isn't an option - nearly everything there is to do here costs money. 3 euros for a coffee, 3 for an ice-cream - it all quickly adds up. Even the 'cheap' food in the supermarket is expensive. Practically at parity with £.

Bloody Brexit!

She gets to retire in the sun so we don't have to?!

Nice.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 29/08/2017 13:41

If only people would talk up the UK instead of continually moaning we would become the Country we once were.

I think it actually Brexiters you are describing. They basically want to transport us back to the 1950s.

ilovesooty · 29/08/2017 13:45

Very strange.

ikeadyounot · 29/08/2017 13:50

I realise that having a holiday abroad is a luxury, not a necessity, but it really does feel prohibitive now. I went to Portugal 18 months ago, and back this summer, and the difference in the cost of everything was unbelievably noticeable.

It's not just about travel, though. We have interconnected economies, so everything - including a lot of food - is getting much more expensive. I'm scared about what will happen when the full impact of this hits. I don't think most people really have the first idea about economics, and that situation isn't helped by the stupid, simplistic economic models peddled by the far right. I am fully expecting them to blame the immigrants/Jews/black people/lack of a quicker Brexit instead and a big upsurge in hate.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 29/08/2017 14:18

The negative thinkers will be blamed. Grin it's all their fault, says the poster currently enjoying her fom in Spain.

Pensionista · 29/08/2017 14:49

You only fear hate if you see hate, bitterness destroys you.
histinyhandsarefrozen.......please don't generalise, I never said it was "all the negative thinkers fault" I said I wish people would stop being so negative, it helps nothing and drains energy. Don't understand your comment about me getting to retire in the sun ? Sorry if your jealous, but I worked and paid my taxes to be able to.
So many patronising comments just because there is a difference of opinions. 'You dont agree with me so therefore you must be thick'! Especially when you know nothing about the person or what they have done, now to me that's being Stupid, simplistic and "thick"

DividedKingdom · 29/08/2017 14:53

I respect Democracy, the democracy that my Father along with billions of others fought for and died for.

Whoops...no I think you'll find they died for freedom and genuine democracy (not a fraudulent mockery of it based on nationalism, xenophobia and lies peddled via an advisory plebiscite) i.e. polar opposite of current situation. Sad but true.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 29/08/2017 15:01

You only fear hate if you see hate??!!!

Er. What bollocks!

You wish people would stop being so negative. Ha. You want people to say this is brilliant - when it isn't. That IS stupid.

but I worked and paid my taxes to be able to. Of course no one else works. No one else pays taxes. No one else at all. Just you. You're marvelous.

And in two years time, our ability to retire in Spain will be gone. Thanks Brexiters. Thanks Baby Boomers. But hey, enjoy yourself, knock yourself out.

thecatfromjapan · 29/08/2017 15:08

To be clear: I am not accusing anyone of anything.

This is just a kind of general public social media health announcement.

But ...

Just in case anyone has been asleep for a while, there is now a type of attack on social media spaces, particularly those which discuss politics. It is organised. The aim is not always to actively persuade people to one political position or another, the aim can be just to make the (political) social media space unusable by normal people.

I think this really needs to be spelt out. I know most of us here realise this. But I think it should almost be a sticky at the top of the politics section of MN.

Histinyhands are frozen......yep that's just the sort of reply I expected, loosing the argument resort to insults. Your right about one thing I AM MARVELOUS. oh and could you please let me know where you got your crystal ball from ?

histinyhandsarefrozen · 29/08/2017 15:15

If they think positive, they will be fine, and if not, I suggest they immigrate to some where like Africa, Afganistan, Irac then they really would have something to moan about. Grin

histinyhandsarefrozen · 29/08/2017 15:17

What argument? Nothing you say makes any sense!

Pensionista · 29/08/2017 15:17

Sorry going for my glass of wine now xxx

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 29/08/2017 15:18

I bet your Christmas crackers are awesome

I assume thats where you are getting the quotes from

thecatfromjapan · 29/08/2017 15:18

I think an actual argument is superfluous if the actual aim is to stop people posting and talking.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 29/08/2017 15:20

I dont think histiny realised she was in the middle of an argument

Enjoy your wine, very tempted to have one while I'm in the bath later...just to finish the open bottle you understand

PoisonousSmurf · 29/08/2017 15:44

First world woes. Holiday at home!

BR62Y · 29/08/2017 15:45

Next years prices for holidays abroad are eye watering in Europe.

Maireadplastic · 29/08/2017 15:47

Pensionista, of course we're jealous. We've all worked hard and paid our taxes. We will not get to retire in Sunny Spain. We may not get to retire at all.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 29/08/2017 15:47

BR

Are they

Is that for everything?

BishopBrennansArse · 29/08/2017 16:50

Ah yes one of the Costa pro Breiteers.
How the hell are they not going to be in the brown stuff once we're out?

Prideinmyplace2 · 29/08/2017 16:57

Yes RufusReindear, for almost everything! It is considerably cheaper to go to the undeveloped world (and helping their economies) places such as Africa, Bali - in fact the whole of Indonesia, India, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand & Zanzibar - before I get pounced on again, I do know it is an Island off the coast of Africa. Apart from the initial flights, the value can be extraordinarily good & possibly the holiday of a lifetime! Reliable childcare is one of the attractions.

In fact if it's a hard Brexit we may as well go live there as we'll be in big financial doggy do! Suggest People read a bit about economics in future before they go anywhere near a Voting booth!

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 29/08/2017 16:59

Was thinking italy or thailand next year (unless we give in and go to Florida)

So maybe thailand
