Really fucked off with Euro exchange rate

We have been going on holiday self-catering to the same place in Europe for over 10 years.

This year everything feels prohibitively expensive - to the point where it is really inhibiting what we can choose to do.

We are here for 2 weeks and it's really hard as family of 4 (with 2 teenagers) to spend less than £100/euros a day on activities/eating out.

Not in a beach resort type place, so taking a picnic to the beach for the day isn't an option - nearly everything there is to do here costs money. 3 euros for a coffee, 3 for an ice-cream - it all quickly adds up. Even the 'cheap' food in the supermarket is expensive. Practically at parity with £.

Bloody Brexit!

The cost of a beer is probably on their spreadsheet to be fair

Unfortunately when my friend was telling me i got a fit of the giggles

It was just the idea of 10 of them coming up with the spreadsheet

There is only 5 of us and we cant settle on somewhere for lunch Smile

MarcyMercy · 28/08/2017 22:07

I am going to Romania end October hopefully to see Dracula's (tourist shite) Castle. I hope Transylvania lives up to the hype!

Bulgaria is another cheap hotspot too. Full of Russians I believe, but so what. ( I really would not like to go there, don't know why, must be the post Soviet stuff).

And there is always Albania, Montenegro, Serbia, Kosovo, Bosnia/Herzegovina and Macedonia. We need to broaden our horizons for cheap holidays!!

We need to broaden our horizons for cheap holidays

A whole new world to explore...

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 28/08/2017 22:10

I was going to mention vampires marcy Grin

Bulgaria is supposed to be very nice and i was surprised at the amount of people i know going to croatia...that seemed very popular this year as well

MarcyMercy · 28/08/2017 22:11

Rufus,

No problem, but I was referring to those who COMPLAIN about costs in the EU now, but who can well afford it and feel fucked over now. Not your friend.

No offence was intended.

ReallyNormalForNorfolk · 28/08/2017 22:12

That's brexit for you. Can't believe that the brexiteers didn't consider the real consequences- crap exchange rate, only taking 2 litres wine or less back wirh you - no free movement or reciprocal healthcare. It's not about immigration,we were never part of the schengen agreement. Just economic suicide. On holiday in France this summer, when asked where I was from, I said "Anglaise, malheureusement".

Orlantina,

There is so much to see outside of the usual haunts for sure. I am looking forward to visiting all the places I mentioned (apart from Bulgaria sorry, it just doesn't appeal). As you say, there is a world out there in Europe that is undiscovered yet.

And I do realise that there was a horrible war in Bosnia/Serbia. I am not being heartless.

Problem is the connections sometimes. But that can be overcome.

cheval · 28/08/2017 22:25

A remoaner. And parent of equal remoaner grown kids. What did Brexit voters expect? Might be better in about 50 years.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 28/08/2017 22:32

Oh sorry marcy

Bit sensitive about the term i think...I appreciate what you mean though

MarcyMercy · 28/08/2017 22:33

cheval..

Why do you call yourself and your kids "Remoaners". That is an epithet that only Brexiteers use.

Sheesh. But I understand your frustration about all this. Such a mess.

MarcyMercy · 28/08/2017 22:36

Rufus,

No worries, and tbh apologies can be rare here, so take a bow!

gluteustothemaximus · 28/08/2017 22:42

thecatfromjapan and Rufustherenegadereindeer1 - thanks Smile

Bit delayed in my response, but hey ho, just catching up with threads Grin

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 28/08/2017 22:44

marcy

Grin

And bow

GladAllOver · 28/08/2017 22:46

Yes it's sad that foreign holidays are costing more, but we are all going to hit by inflation at home. That will hit everyone - including people who can't afford to go abroad.

usernamealreadytaken · 28/08/2017 22:47

Ironing I'd love to know how much a caravan holiday in France, including travel and food, would cost per week during the school summer holidays. We always holiday in Cornwall because a) we love it and b) we can't afford a week in France for the amount we pay for a fortnight in Cornwall. But I'm sure you have found the Mumsnet chicken of French camping holidays Wink

MarcyMercy · 28/08/2017 22:58

And in other news, that fat head in N Korea has unleashed an atomic missile over Japan.

I hope it is not true.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 28/08/2017 23:00

Seriously has he?

I saw footage of his original three missiles, it was like fireworks night at my house...crap

I hope he isn't actually succeeding

MarcyMercy · 28/08/2017 23:10

There was a brief mention on Sky News feed, but I hope it is all bluster once again.

We can only live in hope now.

IroningMountain · 28/08/2017 23:13

We spent £2000 on a 7 bed caravan in walking distance to a stunning beach on stunning coastline. Very little traffic,no parking fees anywhere and a superior location to anything we've found in Cornwall which we know well. This included 4 hour ferry crossing for 5. I priced up Cornwall and a similar quality caravan by a similar quality beach( I'm fussy)on a lesser site was more.

I took loads of food and would to Cornwall.

MarcyMercy · 28/08/2017 23:15

The fat head strikes from NK.

MarcyMercy · 28/08/2017 23:21

My apologies, I took the thread off topic. I couldn't help it, I got a shock about NK there and was in mid typing mode when I heard about it.

I hope I will be forgiven.

Back to topic. Sorry again folks.

Arkenfield3001 · 28/08/2017 23:30

So sorry to hear you're suffering from this but Brexit happened LAST year so you should have foreseen this would happen and budgeted for it ! It'll bounce back but meantime it's great news for my Mum who draws her pension from the Eurozone...

orlantina · 29/08/2017 06:58

so you should have foreseen this would happen and budgeted for it

If I could have foreseen it, I could have brought loads of Euros and made a fortune....

Tiredtimster · 29/08/2017 07:47

I struggle to know where I fit in on MN! If there was categories of remainers I'm probably at activist level, I'm from the North East, have a well paid job in a profession and live in social housing in a very naice estate.
Our holiday this year (same as last 6 years) was significantly more expensive, less days out of the campsite an eating out in the area of Spain we go to was around €70 for 4. We probably spent £400 more than previous years.
I do recall the 08/09 drop in €, but that followed the world recession which was understandable, Brexit is not.
We are booked to go to Spain again next year as well a a week in Croatia. To afford these, cutbacks will be made on weekends away in UK and other treats in UK. I fear, when the cumulative effect of a significant number of people doing this, (for other reasons such as food price increases), we will wander straight into another recession
