neighbours car has been in my garden for 3 months

first ever thread but I wanted some opinions from the outside

neighbours came to me in early May to ask if they can use our drive for two weeks, they bought their DD a car for her birthday as a surprise.
fair enough I thought no problem

the car is still there.

we don't want to cause tension with the neighbours because we all have to live here

my DD is 14 month and has just started to toddle so would like front garden back to make safe ( weeding, gates) for her to play in and I can sit on the door step whenever she wabts to venture outside.

we managed to catch him last week and told him we want to do our garden for DD (can't use back garden, subsided and v unsafe) and asked if he had an idea of when he was planning to shift his car

two months!!! we were quite shocked because he was very matter of fact, no apology etc and dp said "it's kind of taking the piss" and neighbour shrugged it off. it's the end of October...

aibu to want my garden back before October so I can let my DD run loose in her own space whilst we may still have sunny weather/ light evenings??
part of me feels selfish because we don't drive so don't have a car therefore a "drive way" in the literal meaning isn't needed. but our garden IS the drive way.

I'm quite timid and have no idea how to go about this whole situation so I was hoping some mumsnet opinions might help me figure out what to doGrin

October isn't acceptable to me, I need it gone by tomorrow otherwise I'll have to arrange to get it moved myself.

Big smile.

Well done OP, and I am glad the police took it seriously.

I am a bit in love with your DP for sweeping up glass so that dogs don't hurt their feet!

notapizzaeater · 27/08/2017 22:58

Glad the police took it seriously, they sound unhinged

Yes, why can't they push it or jump start it?
Tne insurance would be an issue, but that takes under an hour...

BoomBoomsCousin · 28/08/2017 07:44

I would assume the police have probably not insisted on an immediate time frame because they have no way to force the neighbors to move the car. So they need to put in place a form of expectation management that allows the neighbors time to get their ducks in a row, but feels like they have to actually get moving. If they said "do it tonight" and the neighbors moved an uninsured car onto the road, neighbors would say police forced them. If police said "you must insure the car tonight" and neighbors couldn't do it then police wouldn't be able to do anything about it and neighbors would realise they didn't have to move it at the police's behest. It's all a bit of theatre with the police trying to play the best bluff they can.

As an aside does the fireplace have a surround? In our old house we had the cast iron sandblasted (yellow paint under the cream Confused).
We then had a piece of frosted glass cut to sit behind the surround and put fairy lights inside it. Made it a tidy feature instead.

LillyLoves · 28/08/2017 09:16

Your contract says you are responsible for the upkeep of the garden but that's the garden as it is
It isn't your responsibility to improve it, in fact the safety aspects should be the landlord's job

I was going to say this. Also, have you checked with your landlord that it's ok to put gates in the front garden? Not necessarily a problem if they could be easily removed without leaving any damage should she not want them but I'm guessing you'll need to make holes for the fixings. Apologies if you have already okayed it with her, in that case, ignore me!

Btw well done on dealing with your neighbour. Sounds like it was a real nightmare! Good luck for your interview.

MoveOnTheCards · 28/08/2017 09:30

PastryOnMyMind · 28/08/2017 11:54

thank you for the wishes of luck for tomorrow. typically I've woken up with a sore throat and croaky voice so plodding down to the super market to stock up on soothers shortly. I always get unwell before interviews and my birthdays without fail! Hmm

Well done.

By the way (and sorry if someone has already said this) "tenants being responsible for garden" means mowing the lawn, not funding subsidence repair!

Nanny0gg · 28/08/2017 11:59

Yes. And it's very kind of you to be paying for gates for someone else's property (although I understand the reason)

ohtheholidays · 28/08/2017 12:48
