I wonder (but it is wot-I-reckonry) if they are drip-feeding info to prepare the public for imminent charges, gradually fleshing out what is a complex narrative, so that Trump's removal doesn't tip the country over into unrest when it finally does happen.

That seems plausible. There have been calls to civil wars if he's impeached so perhaps this a way of shifting the Overton window on this
