Neighbours moved out without saying goodbye

Our neighbours appear to have packed their stuff into a removal van and moved out today... Is it weird that they didn't pop round to say bye or even put a note through our door? Their house has been on the market for over a year (on-off process, sales falling through, etc). So we didn't know if/when they were moving out and we didn't want to keep asking for info as we felt it wasn't our business. Equally though it would be nice to know if someone new is moving in, and also wish the old neighbours well in their future plans. We've lived next door for 1.5 years and haven't had much to do with them, just attempted a friendly "hello" now and again. They were courteous but not overly friendly. We were nice neighbours, I think! Is this rude on their part or AIBU and precious?!

They were probably too busy.

anotherBadAvatar · 25/08/2017 14:48

Very very precious.

You've admitted you had nothing to do with them. What did you want? Tears and flowers?

Sayyouwill · 25/08/2017 14:49

Lol

Mushroomburger17 · 25/08/2017 14:49

Yabu! If it was 35 years and you'd babysat each other's kids etc then that would be different.

ShatnersWig · 25/08/2017 14:50

My uncle, his wife and two kids lived four doors down from my parents for 20 years. First thing my parents knew about them moving was when the removal van arrived.

notarehearsal · 25/08/2017 14:50

I lived in the same house for 20 years. I didn't say Goodbye to neighbours. Absolutely no reason to, they weren't my friends

bengalcat · 25/08/2017 14:51

Precious - hope your new neighbours are nice

FallingOrbit · 25/08/2017 14:51

Given that you had so little involvement with them then I don't think it's overly strange that they weren't arsed with goodbyes.

If you were friends and having cups of tea/long chats over the fence/borrowing sugar/wife swapping etc like close neighbours then it would be different.

coddiwomple · 25/08/2017 14:52

YABU

If you barely say "hello" to each other, then it's completely normal. It would be weird if they had come to say good bye frankly.

If you swap keys with your neighbours, help each other out occasionally and are fairly friendly, then yes, it would be maybe not rude, but a bit sad.

MadamePomfrey · 25/08/2017 14:52

You have been neighbors for 1.5years and there house as been on the market for over a year? Maybe they were trying to tell you something Wink

Redglitter · 25/08/2017 14:53

YABU it's not like you were friends with them. I recently moved from a flat to a new house. In all the time I lived in the flat noone ever said goodbyes if they were leaving. I certainly didn't when I moved. I wasn't friendly with my neighbours we said hello and passed the time of day sometimes. I can't imagine they were that bothered about big farewells. I'd have found it strange if one of my neighbours came and announced their departure.

QueenOfVipers · 25/08/2017 14:53

I don't think I've ever said goodbye to any neighbours of mine or known their first names

TheNaze73 · 25/08/2017 14:54

Get a grip. What were you expecting? Bunting?

RhubardGin · 25/08/2017 14:55

You're being precious sorry.

You only lived next door to each other for 1.5 years and didn't know each other, why would they pop over to say bye?

Don't take it personally.

CanIBuffalo · 25/08/2017 14:55

Precious.

Idrinkandiknowstuff · 25/08/2017 14:55

I wouldn't dream of saying goodbye to neighbours when moving, and I'd be a bit Confused if they came knocking at my door to say goodbye to me too.

FirenzeRossignol · 25/08/2017 14:55

Just a thought - are you sure they've moved? Mybe they've been burgled by people who know they're away and were just posing as removal men.

FlaviaAlbia · 25/08/2017 14:56

Could be worse, our neighbours asked to borrow a spanner on moving day and promised they give it back before they left. They forgot.

It was very annoying as it was part of a set and the most commonly used one.

Gincision · 25/08/2017 14:58

Well our neighbours moved away after 3 years. And we socialised with then a lot, including having them over and going out together. It was really odd.

I thought we must have done something to upset them without realising but I've bumped into them since (in a situation where I hadn't noticed they were there so they actively came to see me) and they've been really friendly.

Clearly some people behave very differently to others!

handslikecowstits · 25/08/2017 15:00

Conversely, mine came round with cards and wine when they left. I barely saw them before that.

Perhaps they were trying to tell me something. Grin

amaliaa · 25/08/2017 15:01

YABU you say yourself you haven't had much to do with them. It's not a reflection on you.

implantsandaDyson · 25/08/2017 15:02

Really - you've been on nodding terms for 18 months and you think it's rude that they didn't pop in to say bye? It's not a reflection on you Shock it's just that people they don't really know aren't high up on their list of priorities - shocker I know.

coddiwomple · 25/08/2017 15:02

Just a thought - are you sure they've moved?

that happens to me. Years ago I went travelling for a year, and when I came back the neighbours were completely shocked to see me, they thought I had moved Grin
(London flat, not much interaction between the local residents, I was amazed they even noticed I wasn't there)

Jaxhog · 25/08/2017 15:02

I've always said goodbye. Seems only courteous somehow, and I can give them a change of address card, in case they get any of our post. But then we've always been friendly with our neighbours.

The burglary thing isn't so far fetched actually. I remember a little while ago reading about burglars who did exactly that when a family was on hols.

Silverthorn · 25/08/2017 15:03

Ah I'm sorry Op. They clearly didn't like you. Were you very noisy? Perhaps the new neighbours will be your bff. I would get baking and present them with a fresh batch of muffins and a jug of milk as soon as the moving van turns up. In fact i would even go as far as setting up a little camp with welcome bunting in the garden to wait for them. Grin
