To think they should just ban nuts on all flights

Just reading this and it's heartbreaking, seems like such a simple change to ban nuts on all flights to help protect people.

I've heard several people on mn saying they've been on flights where they were banned, seams to make sense as nut allergies are so widespread to just ban all together imo.

sun you are entitled to an opinion, however can you explain this:

For the tiny amount of people who have allergies, intolerances and so on, the majority have to suffer.

OhSoggyBiscuit · 21/08/2017 16:36

I've got no problem not eating nuts on a flight. I mean, I can't eat the plane food either because of a dairy intolerence, but I can just have a jam sandwich and eat properly once I get to my destination.

IgnoreMeEveryOtherReindeerDoes · 21/08/2017 16:38

DD was on a flight to Ibiza about 2year ago they was told couldn't eat anything to other nuts or may contain nuts due to passenger, which was fair enough it's not like she was going to die of starvation for few hours

VeryCunningStunt · 21/08/2017 16:40

I can go 8 hours without a nut as I'm sure most rational people can

You'd think, wouldn't you? My neighbours' son has a severe allergy so the 'no nuts' announcement gets made when they fly (always within Europe, so 3 hours max). There have been several complaints to the cabin crew about the injustice of this. Because obviously one person's right to eat nuts trumps another person right to breathe Hmm

emilybrontescorset · 21/08/2017 16:42

I have recently flown and nuts were banned on the flight.

VeryCunningStunt · 21/08/2017 16:42

That's utterly horrendous, Penguin

Why are some people such self-obsesssed twats?

bruffin · 21/08/2017 16:42

My friend had an anaphylatic reaction to a cheese sandwich on a plane. He is allergic to penicillan.
My ds has nut and seed allergies and agree with bluntness in that there are a lot of myths around airnourne allergies.
Blindfold tests show people with nut allergies dont react to peanutbutter sandwiches

DeleteOrDecay · 21/08/2017 16:43

For the tiny amount of people who have allergies, intolerances and so on, the majority have to suffer.

Oh for goodness sake. Who exactly is 'suffering' due to nuts no longer being allowed on flights? It's a few hours at most. Do get a grip.

SoupDragon · 21/08/2017 16:43

Blindfold tests show people with nut allergies dont react to peanutbutter sandwiches

Surely they just show that some people, the ones they happen to test, don't react.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 21/08/2017 16:44

I enjoy a small bag of nuts with my G&T when flying.

But what if the presence of your snack actually killed someone? Which do you think is that more important? Your enjoyment or the other passenger's life?

emilybrontescorset · 21/08/2017 16:44

I also fancied buying a snickers bar before flying but thought no, someone might have an allergy so I'll buy some one thing else.
I can't believe anyone would moan about not being able to eat nuts.

penguin1986 · 21/08/2017 16:44

It's the airborne particles btw that caused my reaction. I didn't and don't eat whilst flying.

It's to do with the air recirculating

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 21/08/2017 16:44

bruffin

Where did you see that?

I tested ds1 with a sandwich 16 years ago while in hospital (thought that was the safest place to try)

Was that a waste of time...do i need to force feed him a peanut

Happydoingitjusttheonce · 21/08/2017 16:45

I've just helped my 14yo check in for his first solo trip to see family abroad. On knowing he had epipen in his hand luggage the customer services sent message to flight to say no nuts to be served. He's allergic to tree nuts and fish but peanuts are fine and he has to directly ingest allergens to be affected. I guess the airline would take no chances. I can't see how banning nuts would massively inconvenience people. Pretzels are lovely with the in flight G&T!

RaininSummer · 21/08/2017 16:46

Definitely need a ban but can someone explain whether peanut allergy and nut allergy are separate things as peanuts are not actually nuts are they? Is it normal to be allergic to both or is it usually one or the other?

hedgebitch · 21/08/2017 16:46

I like nuts but I haven't happened to eat one since Christmas, just don't think to buy them. I haven't noticed any painful nut withdrawal symptoms. And I'm very fucking sure that no human being will suffer unduly from not consuming nuts for a few hours. Why does anyone think their preferences are remotely significant in the face of a life threatening allergy? My primary aged child is more mature than that.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 21/08/2017 16:47

rainin

Dd is allergic to peanuts but not any other nuts (although she wont eat tham)

VeryCunningStunt · 21/08/2017 16:47

When they announce no nuts they should say that if you have nuts and it causes a severe reaction in someone, not only will your holiday be delayed as the plane will reroute to obtain medical help, you will be charged the costs incurred since you basically deliberately caused their reaction. Because some people are selfish twunts and won't take notice unless something affects them directly and personally. So make it their problem

I absolutely agree. Some people don't give a shit unless it affects them directly, and, as seen from this thread, ignorance about allergies is rife, so people aren't going to take the announcements seriously.

trinity0097 · 21/08/2017 16:47

Nuts are the only food I can buy on a plane. Everything else is full of carbs and sugar and I can't have that due to my diabetes.

elevenclips · 21/08/2017 16:49

A plane is a locked metal box in the sky. Of course nuts should be banned on planes. I love nuts but nobody needs them in flight.

Sirzy · 21/08/2017 16:49

But trinity surely you could take your own suitable food with you? Actually I would have thought that more sensible really so you know what will be available and when.

ShellyBoobs · 21/08/2017 16:50

For the tiny amount of people who have allergies, intolerances and so on, the majority have to suffer.

In what way do they suffer?

I LOVE nuts but I certainly don't fucking suffer from not eating them for a few hours.

I don't know what planet some people are on...

DeleteOrDecay · 21/08/2017 16:50

Nuts are the only food I can buy on a plane. Everything else is full of carbs and sugar and I can't have that due to my diabetes.

You could just, I don't know, bring your own snacks? Bit of a novel idea I know.

Willow2017 · 21/08/2017 16:51

Yes they should be banned.

The connection with eating in a resataurant and being on a flight where nuts are served is that for the lady on This Morning and for a great many people just the particles in the air, touching the loo door handle after someone had eaten nuts could set off anaphalaxis.

The woman used 2 epi pens and piriton and still she died before the ambulance crew could get there! They revivied her but the damage was done. WTAF would you do in a plane?

Saying an allergy is nothing and that being in the same place as nuts/nut particles is dangerous is bullshit is pure ignorance.

NOBODY need to eat nuts during a flight, there are a million other things they could eat, selfish beyone belief putting your wants (NOT NEEDS) before another persons life.

Kursk · 21/08/2017 16:51

worridmum

Genuine question as I am not knowledgeable about allergies. If your DS is that sensitive to nuts. How do you survive day to day given the amount of nuts in the everyday world.
