To think they should just ban nuts on all flights

Ijustwantaquietlife · 21/08/2017 15:45

Just reading this and it's heartbreaking, seems like such a simple change to ban nuts on all flights to help protect people.

www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-4809148/Former-ITV-producer-reveals-shocking-effect-nut-allergy.html

I've heard several people on mn saying they've been on flights where they were banned, seams to make sense as nut allergies are so widespread to just ban all together imo.

In all seriousness trinity I hope this thread does encourage you to plan ahead to make sure you have suitable alternatives so if you get on a plane and an announcement asking people not to eat nuts is made you have something suitable to eat

Goingtobeawesome · 21/08/2017 17:06

I watched This Morning with the interview with Amy-May and her parents and anyone who did and carries on eating nuts should be ashamed of themselves. The Doctor clearly said that anyone eating nuts in the vicinity of someone with an allergy could cause real issues when the the particles are in the air.

I accept some people are too stupid to understand how it works so they should accept what a doctor has said.

I'd never eat nuts in a confined space. I wouldn't want to be responsible for ruining someone's life.

Ameliablue · 21/08/2017 17:06

I would agree with a ban. I know a few people with nut allergies, both adults and children so I think it is prevalent enough and the nature of planes means anything air borne can be more problematic but also it takes time to get help. What if there is a baby our young child that hasn't been diagnosed yet so doesn't have any medication with them.

brasty · 21/08/2017 17:07

Don'r care about not eating nuts. But genuine question, if you are this allergic that simply breathing something in can kill you, how do you manage on a day-to-day basis?

DP has an allergy to walnuts, but he has to actually eat them.

Epi pens buy you time to get to a hospital, but not always.
If you are at the stage of needing an epi pen then its already dangerous. Plus there are side effects of adrenalin which cause havoc with your body to add to the problem.

How would an epi pen help 30,000 feet up in the air?

Bluntness
There is such a thing as minimising risk.
The person on this morning is now so allergic that particles in the air would affect her.
Why would you increase a life threatening risk for the sake of a snack?
You do know that the air in a plane is recycled so the air from all over the plane is blown back in again, nut particles can find their way to the front of the plane quite easily.
I would rather not put someone elses life no matter how small the risk before my desire to eat a snack. We had this last year on a 12 hour flight, nobody died cos they couldnt eat nuts, nobody ran amok with withdrawal symptoms, nobody cried we just ate something else. Even my kids understood the reasons and didnt give a hoot about the sweets we had brought.

Sunglasses

That is truley sad that you value a snack over a human beings life.
As I said I havent seen anyone 'suffer' cos they didnt get to eat nuts 'right now'. Seeing someone have a reaction to an allergy, now thats suffering.

user1489675144 · 21/08/2017 17:08

I have read the story and banning nuts on flights would not have prevented this young lady from ending up in a coma. Her reaction came in BUDAPEST when she ate a food that she believed didn't contain nuts.... it didn't occur on a plane... so how on earth banning nuts on planes would help?
She actually ate one... other people eating them in the restaurant didn't hurt it was when she ate food contaminated with nuts...

bimbobaggins · 21/08/2017 17:08

I can't understand how people can be so self absorbed and selfish that they are annoyed about not getting a bag of nuts on a plane. Seriously can't get my head round it.

DeleteOrDecay · 21/08/2017 17:09

Sun you are very ignorant. Epi pens are not magic, they don't stop the reaction they just buy enough time to get proper medical attention. They can fail and there are side effects which can be dangerous.

I'm sure you can understand that when you're 30k feet in the air, that medical attention can be a bit difficult to come by. Surely in the case of a plane flight, prevention is better than a cure. It's better to not have nuts on a flight than it is to have to divert a prolong travelling time due to a medical emergency that could have been easily prevented.

Shocked at how entitled some people are over nuts. NUTS for fucks sake.

If they were trying to ban water on flights I'd understand but fucking nuts??

Sirzy · 21/08/2017 17:09

In most places you can move away, in most places air isn't recycled. On an airplane you can't get away

Goingtobeawesome · 21/08/2017 17:09

"surely if you know you have an allergy you'd carry your epi pen/medication."

allthebestnamesareused - she was told the food was nut free and two applications of the epi pen didn't help her.

LakieLady · 21/08/2017 17:09

My friends peanut allergy means she can't have almonds, peanuts or chickpeas

This surprises me, because peanuts and chickpeas aren't actually nuts, they're legumes. Almonds are nuts though, so quite different from peanuts and chickpeas.

Hulababy · 21/08/2017 17:10

Ive been on a number of flights were it has been announced hey'll be no nuts available on board, and that people must not eat nuts they've brought themselves.

I do think that it is something that could easily be banned from taking on a flight as it is something people can easily manage without for the duration of a flight, surely? And the implications of someone having a severe reaction on a flight is so dire, I'd think it best to try and prevent in the first place.

user1489675144 · 21/08/2017 17:10

PS I agree that if someone is so severe that air particles containing the smell from nuts causes a reaction then ban them on that flight

It wouldn't help Amy though since her reaction was in a restaurant

BlondeB83 · 21/08/2017 17:11

YANBU, they should definitely be banned. Such a small thing but could actually save a life.

ILovePeanutsAndNuts · 21/08/2017 17:11

I'm probably going to get slaughtered for this, but I have a right to speak my mind Smile. Personally - and please don't think I don't have sympathy for people with genuine allergies, I really do - I don't think the 99.99% should be penalised for the 0.01%. Planes, restaurants, schools, whatever. If 299 out of 300 people enjoy eating nuts, why should every single one of them be punished because 1 person is allergic? As far as I'm concerned, the person who knows they're allergic should be the one to find an alternative.

And I also think the reason so many people have peanut allergies is because everyone was told for so long to to eat peanuts while pregnant. The way to help your unborn baby to build a tolerance, is to eat peanuts! Growing up in SA, nobody every had any peanut allergies, and all pregnant mothers ate peanuts. I ate peanuts all the way through my pregnancy. Only here in the UK where everyone gets told peanuts are BAD, do so many people have allergies. They've now admitted they were wrong, and that pregnant women should actually eat peanuts!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 21/08/2017 17:11

Jesus. Did you just write that post in all seriousness, sun?

WTF is wrong with you?

ShakingAndShocked · 21/08/2017 17:12

StillStayingClassySanDiego Mon 21-Aug-17 16:58:59

Sun this creeping allergenic/intolerant minority has us all falling all over them everywhere....hmm really, can you back up with figures regarding 'falling over them?'

You are an utterly goady twat.

Yes, I know I'll be deleted.

Banning nuts on planes and the sale of nuts in airports is a brilliant idea. I like a Snickers, but I feel I can manage to suffer through a flight without one for the sake of the selfish, allergic minority who will insist on not being killed because of other people's stupidity.

I confess I'm not entirely clear on how a plane ban would've helped this lady, but so what? We should still have one anyway.

trickster78 · 21/08/2017 17:13

Aha, no. I ate nuts every day whilst pregnant and breastfeeding my daughter. Didn't protect her too much, did it? My 2nd DD has no allergies, I still ate nuts but not in th same quantities as I don't tend to have them in the house these days. Sometimes it's just one of those things.

sunglassally · 21/08/2017 17:13

I am not ignorant thank you, but I uphold your right to say it about me.

The lady mentioned in OP had her devastating anaphylactic shock in a restaurant, quite far away from a plane cabin.

I have no problem with nuts being banned from airlines. Already said it.

Just goes to show, sadly that the problem is not just in an airplane it is everywhere.

But maybe we should just close down all restaurants. That would the easier thing to do now wouldn't it.

SoupDragon · 21/08/2017 17:14

I don't think the 99.99% should be penalised for the 0.01%.

Please explain how they are being penalised.

Elarks · 21/08/2017 17:14

We have nut free schools - Why not nut free travel?

penguin1986 · 21/08/2017 17:15

To all the posters saying they shouldn't be.

You'd be the first kicking off if the plane had to divert because of someone having a preventable allergic reaction

@ILovePeanutsAndNuts that is total bollocks , some allergies at genetic, It had nothing to do with my mother eating peanuts in pregnancy

Neolara · 21/08/2017 17:15

I was flying over a desert at 30,000 feet when the airline gave out bags of mixed nuts to every person on the plane. My dd has a very severe peanut allergy. It was fucking terrifting but actually dd was OK.

Afterwards, the consultant said that the risks from airborne inhalation were very small.

However, it was obvious that there were very serious risks of cross contamination with the situation Every second person in the plane seemed to pour the remnants of nuts into the palm of their hand before putting them into their mouth. Then when people walked up the aisle, everyone held on to the back of the seats, spreading the nut dust. They open the door of the loo with their nutty hands. They put their nutty hands onto the pull down tray. It's a nut allergy nightmare. Dd was still at the thumb sucking stage so anything she touched risked being ingested. I didn't let her leave her seat and scrubbed everything with wet wipes..

Going into anaphylaxis on an aeroplane is really, really not a great situation.
