To think they should just ban nuts on all flights

Just reading this and it's heartbreaking, seems like such a simple change to ban nuts on all flights to help protect people.

I've heard several people on mn saying they've been on flights where they were banned, seams to make sense as nut allergies are so widespread to just ban all together imo.

@Lucysky2017 if I had four boiled eggs on a flight, there would be no need for jet engines.

However, there would be a huge demand for oxygen masks!

4691IrradiatedHaggis · 22/08/2017 20:38

Lovingit81That is such a horrible thing to say that you hope a poster chokes. Unbelievable.

Good grief, that's rich coming from you and all you've said on here. Weren't you the one who said upthread that you don't see why you should stop eating nuts for some unknown?

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 22/08/2017 20:38

I agree with andrew

SoupDragon · 22/08/2017 20:39

Until I see data that there is a proper risk to the 2,750,000,000 air passengers per year...

There isn't. Only those with a severe allergy are ever at risk. Unless you are trying to claim those 2,750,000,000 are somehow at risk from not being allowed nuts?

Lucysky2017 · 22/08/2017 20:41

I DO take my own food every time. I am there with the tupperwear container with my whole eggs, carrots, pieces of meat, salmon and very often nuts too particularly if I have 10 hours of flying time as they are so easy to take. I would not want to harm anyone of course. If nuts were banned I would do mym best to remember. I would want that made clear before I booked a flight and that it be in very large letters and I might well book a flight based on whether nuts were allowed or not.

Wopmen in late pregnancy often cannot fly. Loads of people aren't allowed to flay and I have relatives who have never been on a plane so not flying because you have a nut allergy seems a perfectly reasonable and sensible thing to me but some people think they have God given rights to fly and to control the foods other people eat.

I can see why it is a big issue.

My vegan sons also eat a lot of nuts. It is a hgue part of their diet and obivously if not eating nuts will save the life of a passenger they will just have to stock up and take with them lentils or whatever else they eat that are like nuts.

SoupDragon · 22/08/2017 20:42

I am just wondering about the evidence that it is more dangerous on board than in the concourse, in the Q, wherever

You can't get off a plane to get medical attention. What is so hard to grasp about that?

cheval · 22/08/2017 20:42

Tragic for the woman involved. But she wasn't on a plane. Was in a restaurant that failed to give her nut-free food. So don't understand why that would involve a nut ban on planes. Better one in restaurants presumably. And that would be impossible worldwide.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 22/08/2017 20:43

And i also agree with soup

Dead flighty me

4691IrradiatedHaggis · 22/08/2017 20:45

I'm also baffled as to how hard of thinking you have to be to just not get that fact. It's been said over and over, but some just can't or won't listen.

holidayqueriwifi · 22/08/2017 20:47

Why can't people be kind? It's a packet of nuts ffs. Hardly urgent for people to eat.

FaveNumberIs2 · 22/08/2017 20:50

@sunglassally

Their is no definitive proof either way.

All peanut allergy sufferers suffer different levels.

It seems the airlines who have banned it, have done so as a preventative measure. Personally, I'd rather it be that way than the ban be a reaction to a death or bad incident.

Ta1kinPeece · 22/08/2017 20:54

Favenumber

Which airlines have banned nuts?
link please

SoupDragon · 22/08/2017 20:55

Would a diagram help?

To think they should just ban nuts on all flights
kittybiscuits · 22/08/2017 20:56

Excellent diagram @SoupDragon . You would think it was idiot-proof!

sunglassally · 22/08/2017 20:57

Funny how certain posters recall everything about every poster on a thread, and some check previous. God Almighty how sad a life is that.

I wouldn't have a clue who posted anything anywhere. It is a discussion board not Guantanamo.

Anyway, at the risk of repeating myself, I agree with a ban on nuts on a plane.

At least I didn't advocate that a poster should choke to death in the event that she had a G+T with a packet of nuts.

This place can be mad sometimes, but that's why we are all still here.

Civility is the key I think though.

LunaFortuna · 22/08/2017 20:57

Wow, this thread. Is it really that unreasonable to not eat nuts for a few hours on a plane - there's a lot of alternatives, it's not a biggie to help someone be able to fly in peace. It's about mitigating risk. Airborne or not, people eat nuts with their fingers and then touch the table or go to the loo and touch the door. Do you really need evidence that this kind of contamination can happen? Seems like common sense to me.

It's a tiny little inconvenience, be kind ffs

trickster78 · 22/08/2017 20:58

Right. Pregnant women cannot fly for the last 4 weeks or so of their pregnancy. 4 weeks. As opposed to a lifetime due to the fact you have a condition that you have no control over and at present there is no cure for. Yup. Seems entirely reasonable.

user1495656648 · 22/08/2017 21:00

Andrewoffgg i was just thinking the same thing, laughing here at all of Ta1kinPeece comments! 😂 wondering if shes even reading the same thread?! I dont think its just the lack of nuts thats the problem, clearly disadvantaged with a lack of common sense!

LunaFortuna · 22/08/2017 21:00

Ha Soup Dragon - love the diagram :)

DeleteOrDecay · 22/08/2017 21:05

Sounds like you are the one who thinks you have a God given right to do what ever you like in a confined space regardless of whether you are putting other people's lives at risk. Can you not see how ridiculous and precious you sound?

Women in late pregnancy can't fly because there's a risk to them and the baby. You can't remove that risk so it makes sense, it's only a temporary thing.

You can however, reduce the risk of a nut allergy sufferer going into anaphylaxis mid-flight. By not allowing nuts in flight.

Why on earth should nut allergy sufferers not be allowed to fly when there's a perfectly simple and logical solution which would allow them to travel safely?

This thread is bonkers.

londonrach · 22/08/2017 21:10

Fave..lol re your need for gas masks no fuel!

trickster78 · 22/08/2017 21:11

Delete, thank goodness, I thought it was just me. Not only do allergic people miss out on so much stuff that non allergic people don't ever have to even think about, now they shouldn't fly. For the sake of all the lucky non allergic people who shouldn't miss out on the nuts. For a couple of hours. For what is for most people at most a couple of times a year.

Ta1kinPeece · 22/08/2017 21:14

I'm still wondering what a ban on nuts on flights has to do with the original story

as nobody has yet provided any evidence that there is a problem with how things are at present

flying is not a "right" is a planet destroying luxury after all

DeleteOrDecay · 22/08/2017 21:21

A luxury that you as a person who presumably doesn't have a nut allergy, gets to take part in with little thought to the effects on your health (or the planet).

So shocking how some people are so pig-headed that they absolutely refuse to make the tiniest of compromises (for a few hours at most) for a fellow human.

When the alternative is potentially having your flight diverted due to a passenger needing immediate medical attention, missing a sizeable chunk of your holiday as a result, is it really worth you having your fucking nuts?

QuackPorridgeBacon · 22/08/2017 21:23

I'm fine with nuts and know no-one with a nut allergy. However I have a child who has to be careful around eating certain foods or how they were prepared because of a medical condition and major surgery. Purely through her experiences I don't see an issue with banning nuts on a flight where a passenger has notified the airline that they have a nut allergy. I think anyone who then proceeds to eat nuts I think should be banned from flying as they are a risk of sorts. If no one on the flight has a nut allergy then I see no reason to ban them. I assume those with such a severe allergy, even those with a lesser reaction do actually notify the airline and precautions are taken. I think allergies should be avoided when and where necessary and if you are selfish enough to willingly endanger someone's life just to eat a snack you like then I am truly shocked. It's a nut, you can survive without eating them on a plane journey, I think the right to live trumps the right to eat a nut.
