To think they should just ban nuts on all flights

Just reading this and it's heartbreaking, seems like such a simple change to ban nuts on all flights to help protect people.

I've heard several people on mn saying they've been on flights where they were banned, seams to make sense as nut allergies are so widespread to just ban all together imo.

Penhacked.

I know this, I have absolutely no problem with nuts being banned on board an aircraft at all.

I am just wondering about the evidence that it is more dangerous on board than in the concourse, in the Q, wherever,

No one has provided that evidence yet.

FaveNumberIs2 · 22/08/2017 19:05

@sunglassally

About 50% of a plane's air is recycled, and then its mixed with fresh air which comes in through the engines and through a cooling unit.

I think the problem is more to do with an enclosed space. You can't just, 'step outside'.

So I guess it would be like a peanut allergy person being stuck in a lift with someone eating peanuts, except they can get off on the next floor.

I work in a place where a girl is allergic to nuts but, surprisingly, has her worse reaction to coconut. We made sure she didn't have any but she sat beside her friend who was eating fruit crumble which contained dessicated coconut. Within five minutes, the girl's lips swelled and she had to be taken for her epic pen injection.

sunglassally · 22/08/2017 19:05

trickster.

Pretzels nearly choked Prez Bush to death though. Another ban looms.

NotSoNewbie · 22/08/2017 19:05

Surely if you know you have an allergy you'd carry your epi pen/medication.

If only it were that simple Allthebestnamesareused. An epi-pen might buy you time until an ambulance arrives or you get to hospital, but it certainly isn't always a cure for anaphylaxis, and would unlikely buy you enough time to get to a hospital if you were mid-air.
I have severe tree nut allergies and I once asked an airline to make the announcement, but the cabin crew member literally collapsed laughing as he said "Please put your nuts away if you are near the front row!"...making a joke out of the situation, and I felt really embarassed and humiliated!

mintyneb · 22/08/2017 19:07

I have no issue with banning nuts and peanuts on flights.

Whilst I realise this is nothing to do with the topic of the thread I do have an issue with people saying that allergies to milk and other foods are more like intolerances and therefore less deadly. The last 2-3 reported deaths in the news over the last few months were due to young people having an anaphylactic reaction to milk.

If you are severely allergic to something (as in your immune system overeacts to a harmless substance) you can die. Doesn't matter what it is

sunglassally · 22/08/2017 19:13

Peanut allergy seems to be very deadly for some who are uber sensitive. Ban the sale or consumption of them. I am all for it, it is easy to do.

But it doesn't solve the problem. Some people can be assholes and will do just the opposite and open and eat them when told not to having bought them pre boarding. I don't know how that kind of behaviour can be overcome if they buy the nuts before boarding.

I worry that all other allergies/intolerances will want bans on aircraft in time too. But why wouldn't they in fairness, equality of allergy surely will raise its head sooner or later.

I still have had no peer reviewed evidence that peanut dust causes this on a plane as opposed to in the Q or before boarding. Just saying.

Lucysky2017 · 22/08/2017 19:18

it is quite hard and sometimes people might not even remember. I eat whole foods so most of what a plane serves is not food I can eat. I would not eat a processed carb like a bread stick or prezel of course. Nuts or piece of chicken or eggs are fine for me but it is very very hard to find non processed foods. So if they want to ban buts can they please give us without charge something times which is whole food, unprocessed eg a piece of salmon with no sauce woudl do me instead of nuts or 4 hard boiled eggs would be fine.

sunglassally · 22/08/2017 19:21

Lucysky,

Would you consider bringing your own foods on board yourself? I would if I were you. And I would enjoy it knowing I provided it myself.

BTW people pay for everything on a plane these days, unless it is long haul and included in the price, or god forbid Business or First Class.

The rest of us are just cattle class and pay for everything.

strawberrisc · 22/08/2017 19:23

I'm never so desperate to stick a couple of nuts in my mouth that I can't wait until I get off a plane.

Summer888 · 22/08/2017 19:29

I agree nuts should be banned on flights. The air in a plane is recycled and those allergic are often so reactive that airborne particles will trigger the allergy. Epi-pens are notoriously unreliable and are only a last resort. The poor girl who got brain damage used 2 epi-pens without any effect. Surely someone's life is worth more than a snack? There are lots of other things people can eat on planes. Sadly you get selfish people who ignore those announcements and put people's lifes at risk, so it's easier just to ban nuts on flights.

fullofhope03 · 22/08/2017 19:37

I bloody love nuts. Am getting stuck into a pack now (with a lovely glass of Wine Smile However, I'm sure I could manage to go without them on a flight however long. Seriously - They should be banned on flights.

sunshinexx · 22/08/2017 19:38

As someone who has suffered from a nut allergy my whole life (now late 30's) I strongly believe that nuts should be banned on flights. I am alarmed at the ignorance of some posters on here, who only think of their own enjoyment and not the safety and wellbeing of others.

My allergy is not severe, I eat foods that 'may contain nuts' as most food items now state that as precaution. I have been hospitalised on a couple of occasions but usually anti-histamines are good enough. My face puffs up, eyes close, itchy throat, vomiting and I cannot breath, its scary and uncomfortable. I have had people eat peanuts at lunchtime and kiss me later in the evening (quick peck on lips or cheek) and my face and lips have swollen up.

I was not aware and had not experienced to my knowledge an airborne allergic reaction to nuts until a couple of years ago at Christmas when I visited a family member who had a bowl of nuts on the coffee table, along with the other usual Xmas treats. After a short time being in the room I began to get all my normal indicators that I was having a reaction. I started to have difficulty breathing, and had to leave their house and take continued doses of medication to control the asthma attack that I was now having - Yes this was because of the nuts and yes it does happen, airborne nut particles and subsequent allergies are real!! For someone with a severe allergy it can be fatal. I was able to leave that environment before anything serious happened but in the enclosed environment of a plane, with recirculated air that is not possible.

Everyone should be able to travel safely and if there are known risks then everything that can be done should be done to remove that risk :)

Ummmmgogo · 22/08/2017 19:42

just wondering who is telling the truth? those who say only peanut allergies are airborne or those who say that have witness airborne allergic reactions to egg and milk? surely you either believe in airborne allergies or you don't??

Ta1kinPeece · 22/08/2017 19:52

I followed the link that user149 gave.
It states that there is no data.
I the followed one of the links in it to this article
www.annallergy.org/article/S1081-1206(10)60835-6/fulltext
which is based on 471 self reported nut allergy sufferers and most said they did not draw the crew's attention to their reaction.

Until I see data that there is a proper risk to the 2,750,000,000 air passengers per year,
as against a few news stories

I'll assume that blanket bans are pointless

Lovingit81 · 22/08/2017 19:53

They should absolutely be banned. My son has a nut allergy and my sister has a severe nut allergy. For the poster saying they like a bag of nuts with their g&t i hope you choke. You've no idea what people go through!

sunglassally · 22/08/2017 20:03

Lovingit81

That is such a horrible thing to say that you hope a poster chokes.

Unbelievable.

NewBallsPlease00 · 22/08/2017 20:03

My fiend was temporarily banned from flying with Virgin long haul until she could prove dr was happy for her to do so- she had simply asked them to do the announcement at the beginning too!
Nut allergies are often airborne.
It's fine to not have a nut based snack FFS
I say that as someone who has dietary restrictions due tonight non airborne allergies
Massive inconvenience for you all to emergency land in random place and be interviewed no?

sunglassally · 22/08/2017 20:08

I'm still looking for the peer reviewed (not anecdotal) evidence from erudite posters......where is the evidence that peanuts can be airborne, or their dust?

Still waiting......

Ta1kinPeece · 22/08/2017 20:10

Massive inconvenience for you all to emergency land in random place and be interviewed no?
But has that ever happened or is this all just DM froth?

Most cancer patients are banned from flying when they have no immune system.
Many carriers of infectious diseases are banned from flying.

Why should nut allergy sufferers make everybody else fit round them when other people don't ?

Andrewofgg · 22/08/2017 20:20

Ta2kinPeece ffs. It's the most trivial of matters in respect of which other passengers are being asked to cooperate. Is the grip shop open yet?

Lovingit81 · 22/08/2017 20:21

Sunglassally you're just an ill educated moron....goodnight!

Ta1kinPeece · 22/08/2017 20:24

andrew
Are you proposing banning nuts from all flights?
Including the ones where people bring their own food all over the world?
And how would you enforce that?
And what happens to the nuts once on board?
And are we talking legumes (which peanuts are) or true nuts?
And how about eggs and dairy?

And nobody has yet shown me that there is anything other than a media froth risk
therefore I remain utterly unconvinced.

Andrewofgg · 22/08/2017 20:34

I am saying that if a passenger is nut-allergic no nuts should be served and people should be asked not eat their own. It might be well to add that "if the passenger with the allergy were to be taken ill we might have to divert the flight" which might encourage compliance by the selfish twats of this world.

I know - I pointed out - that passengers may have nut residue on their fingers or on their breath. You can't cover every risk.

Andrewofgg · 22/08/2017 20:36

And do you always refuse to believe anything which might be to your disadvantage if it were true?

Ta1kinPeece · 22/08/2017 20:36

what about dairy?
or eggs?
and if the nuts are on the plane ......

still waiting to see any evidence this has ever been needed
