To think they should just ban nuts on all flights

Ijustwantaquietlife · 21/08/2017 15:45

Just reading this and it's heartbreaking, seems like such a simple change to ban nuts on all flights to help protect people.

www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-4809148/Former-ITV-producer-reveals-shocking-effect-nut-allergy.html

I've heard several people on mn saying they've been on flights where they were banned, seams to make sense as nut allergies are so widespread to just ban all together imo.

I agree with the nut ban on flights but linking this story to it seems erroneous as the lady consumed nuts in a dish in a restaurant and it was not related to someone eating nuts on plane. I think that nut free in school is fine and no big deal avoiding in children's lunches, dairy free like one mum in my dcs school requested however i feel is unreasonable

lazycrazyhazy · 22/08/2017 09:54

I actually agree with you about dairy and gluten as the child can bring their own and they don't spread through the air (buffets are hard as people move spoons around!).
Also those don't usually cause anaphylaxis.

My DGS has anaphylaxis to eggs so it will be interesting to see how school handles that, not airborne but he reacts very badly even if you kiss him after eating egg... going to be tricky with sticky fingers. Hoping he will improve before school.

Valuedopinion · 22/08/2017 10:08

lazycrazyhazy, exactly, it's about general lack of awareness. It was also a teenage boy, not a lady.

Valuedopinion · 22/08/2017 10:10

Sorry, presumably pp meant original article, hard to know what is being referred to sometimes in replies.

girlsyearapart · 22/08/2017 10:18

We flew back from the US recently with anaphylactic dd and they put out an announcement to say a child on board had a severe nut allergy and please do not eat nuts on the flight.
Bloke just across the aisle carried on eating his big bag of peanut m&ms
When the flight attendant came around to say something he just shrugged poured the last few in his mouth and crumpled up the packet
He wasn't to know he was sitting just across the aisle from the allergic child but still a dick move

jitterbug5 · 22/08/2017 10:29

The ignorance on this thread is incredible.

*I enjoy some nuts with a G&T

If you have this allergy you carry an Epipen
*
My husband has a very very severe peanut allergy and he has to carry an epipen. However this prolongs his heart beating for 20 extra minutes until he can get medical help. An epipen doesn't stop his reaction Hmm
Shocking that some people would rather have a snack and risk someone's life. Peanut dust, in the air, would kill my husband. Hence why this is taken more seriously than dairy allergies etc.

worridmum · 22/08/2017 10:47

I fucking wish airbourn allgies where a myth and my son didnt nearly die on a plane because of twat in the row in front opened a bag after being ask not too having a plane dirveting to another airport to save his life and then spending over a week in hospital with him was a myth if i wasnt at work i would find the newspapper article of it and its mythological airborne allegry.

gluteustothemaximus · 22/08/2017 11:26

That's the problem worridmum - that's why a ban is best, because people don't listen/don't care/don't want to follow the rules.

You poor DS. How scary Flowers

Antigonads · 22/08/2017 11:26

Christ on a fucking bike.

I said I enjoyed some nuts with a G&T. I did not say I would do it on a plane if someone was known to have allergies.

I also said that I have not seen nuts served on a plane for years.

But go on. Keep on quoting that one sentence.

DeleteOrDecay · 22/08/2017 11:36

But hush, there are some on here who are very annoyed that a peanut would be within a mile of them. On a plane though.

Yeah, the ones who are allergic and/or have loved ones who are allergic, as well as people like me who have this thing called empathy and understanding. How entitled of them to feel this wayHmm

If my DS had an allergy which could result in death and he was particular at risk on a plane, I wouldn't fly.

That's great if that would work for you but what you're essentially saying is that anyone with a severe allergy shouldn't fly. Why should people have to miss out because they have an allergy when there are ways of accommodating them?

Andrewofgg · 22/08/2017 11:47

girlsyearapart If he had already opened the bag when the announcement was made his mouth was the least worst place to put them, wasn't it?

SoupDragon · 22/08/2017 11:49

If my DS had an allergy which could result in death and he was particular at risk on a plane, I wouldn't fly.

Actually, a better solution would be to stop anyone who needs to eat nuts on a plane from flying. It would inconvenience far fewer people, possibly none.

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 22/08/2017 11:50

I'm surprised at the amount of inconsiderate ignorant people opening bags of nuts in the plane after announcements being made about anaphylactic passengers - several posters have quoted similar stories. Some of these have resulted in diverted flights and hospital admissions. I bet this would stop if the passengers who ignored the warnings were held responsible in some way - financially for the extra costs of a diversion or criminally for knowingly taking steps to severely endanger others' lives during a flight. I honestly don't think this would be disproportionate.

Disclaimer: I have a non-severe nut allergy. I actually feel lucky because it's manageable and non life-threatening. These threads always amaze me - MN is supposed to gather a more educated than average demographic but even here the ignorance about the most common allergies is widespread.

lilylivers · 22/08/2017 11:52

I agree that nuts should be banned on planes. It is an easy rule to implement. If it saves one life, that is great.

However, until this is implemented, I would be very worried about anyone close to me with a potentially life threatening allergy travelling on a plane. I would be petrified, and I admire those of you who do travel notwithstanding the risk.

butterfly56 · 22/08/2017 11:55

Nuts should definitely be banned on planes

Fekko · 22/08/2017 11:56

Put it this way - hands up anyone who ever heard of anyone not falling ill/dying from having nuts on a plane?

4691IrradiatedHaggis · 22/08/2017 12:03

My son's last reaction was caused by a mother at his school, who decided that nut allergies are all a fad, so she not only put nuts in a cake she sent to a school which has a ban on nuts, but she on purpose did not tell anybody there she had done so.

God, that is horrendous. Who does that?! She's lucky it wasn't fatal. Idiot.

Fluffypinkpyjamas · 22/08/2017 12:06

This thread really bothered me. It made me realise that there really are some real nasty cunts on here, some of whom I had previously liked from other threads. I would never have thought they genuinely didn't give a shit about anyone else - and calling other posters 'hysterical' or 'dramatic' to try and get their point across just makes them look ridiculous and it's obvious that they can't think of anything sensible to say. Certainly made me think

I totally agree Hex quite astounding isn't it.

The debate about how far the problem extends is surely a good thing? Posters have had their eyes opened somewhat, such that they will now consider what they do and eat just prior to a flight. Some people apparently want to quash ANY debate with their dubious facts and hysteria.

We should be grateful that people are taking on board the information provided by the well balanced posts that are here for all to read. The excessively emotional posts aren’t helping the debate. (outright abuse ditto)

Iwanttobe8stoneagain Tue 22-Aug-17 06:41:55
Having read through the thread apart from a couple of people I don't think anyone has actually said they need to eat peanuts on a plane. Most people don't give a shit whether they get to eat nuts on a plane or not. Some of the vitriolic responses are verging on the hysterical and actually not responding to people's comments!...

Well said! I agree wholeheartedly. Has ANY poster claimed that they will definitely (and defiantly) eat nuts regardless of an allergy sufferer? I don’t think so. Just because someone says they ‘I enjoy some nuts with a G&T’ does NOT mean they would do that with an allergic person around.

Sorry, I just don’t have the time to read every post for a second time. I’m pretty sure that nobody has stated they will eat nuts regardless. But the hysteria continues:

Why are some people so convinced they are entitled to have what they want when they want and to hell with everyone else?

Just where has that been posted here?

HelloSquirrels · 22/08/2017 12:14

Wow, this thread has really opened my eyes to quite how selfish some people can be.

I don't even like nuts so not eating them would be a total non issue to me, however, even if it was my most favourite food (chocolate actually so potentially can contain traces) i would be happy to go a few hours without eating it. It is so fucking selfish, to risk someones life, because you're peckish. There a lot of different foods served on a plane, and many more that you can take with you. Is it really that hard to not eat a nut for what a maximum of 12 hours? (I don't do long distance flying so no idea really!)

How guilty would you feel if you were the one prick on the plane that refused to stop eating nuts, and someone DIED because of you? I cannot imagine living with myself knowing i had essentially ended someones life because i was being selfish.

Fresh8008 · 22/08/2017 12:15

close (30cm) exposure to inhaling peanut butter aroma produces no reactions in severely peanut allergic people. Smelling peanuts may make concerned passengers uncomfortable, but there are no active proteins involved in breathing in the aroma of re-heated or pre-roasted nuts

peanut particles (dust) can not be detected in the air from stomping on peanuts on the floor or from opening an airline-style bag

peanut dust and peanut butter residues are both easily cleaned from hands and surfaces using soap and warm water or hand cleansers (but hand sanitisers and plain water don’t work).

Inhaling (thereby ingesting) a dose of an airborne allergen is very unlikely on an airplane because there is little “recirculation” and commercial jets are required to frequently refresh the cabin air and subject it to high efficiency particulate air filtration and there is no evidence to show that peanut or tree nut circulates in the air, as opposed to it quickly settling on surfaces.

Posted yesterday to say that I, as can anyone , can go without nuts on a plane . (Not even that keen on them but beside the point)

I had not seen the video of the young lady but now I have seen it and all those stating its not that bad , go watch , IT IS

For the sake of somebodies life (or to prevent brain damage like Amy has got (it is Amy isn't it?)) stop eating nuts As for you who likes nuts with your G&T , words fail.
