To think they should just ban nuts on all flights

Ijustwantaquietlife · 21/08/2017 15:45

Just reading this and it's heartbreaking, seems like such a simple change to ban nuts on all flights to help protect people.

I've heard several people on mn saying they've been on flights where they were banned, seams to make sense as nut allergies are so widespread to just ban all together imo.

Violently sick isn't the same as dying no but when you look at the list ad allergies which have caused death should we ban all of those? I'm thinking chicken, seafood, lentils, tomatoes, dairy, sesame seeds, cheese, eggs, bananas, chocolate and wheat. I'm sure there's more too

4691IrradiatedHaggis · 21/08/2017 21:53

I have a friend who has several severe allergies including gluten and dairy. She was highly allergic to garlic and simply breathing on her made her violently sick! The question would be where do you stop?

Violently sick though isn't the same as potentially dying. Please don't think I'm minimizing, as I'm not, as I suffer from violently sick reactions to drinking a cup of milk and know what it's like.
Are the people on the plane likely to go up to your friend and breathe right in her face after eating a bulb of garlic?

DesignedForLife · 21/08/2017 21:57

Bruffin, it's documented in many medical journals

Google turns up lots of evidence.

sunglassally · 21/08/2017 22:02

I think you should all go to bed now, nut free, allergen free and anything else that is free.

Do not travel on a plane ever again. Well maybe when they ban the peanuts, which I agree with. It causes less drama for everyone and saves lives.

Get your own boat or private plane and just get on with it if society feels your needs are not as great as society's needs in general. Safest is best isn't it. Protect yourself and your family at all costs, it's up to you really now to decide.

Tapandgo · 21/08/2017 22:07

My son has had several serious nut allergy incidents - one when someone was stirring a mixture to make peanut butter cookies at the opposite end of a classroom. This was a well ventilated large room. I hate to think if he had been sitting near a nut eater in the confined space of a plane.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 21/08/2017 22:07

Oh good lord

Sadmum23 · 21/08/2017 22:08

I do not know if a blanket ban is the right course of action . I do support more awareness and tolerance. Speaking as a mum whose daughter passed away from anaphylactic shock

Guys, how about not feeding the troll? Seriously, ignore &/or report but just don't feed it.

4691IrradiatedHaggis · 21/08/2017 22:30

Some posters here clearly want to ‘interpret’ what you said and ‘cherry-pick’ posts to suit their particular angry stance on here.

Who would that be then?! I'm not intepreting or cherry picking anything. Some of the stuff on here needs challenging though as it is utterly ignorant.

Yep, well said. Easier said than done, and I never wish ill on anyone, but right now I kind of hope they get educated soon in the ways of allergies.

Agree. We all know when some guy has come on here to play the polite "devil's advocate" AKA be a GF for their own sad amusement

After the benefit of doubt for a few posts, just ignore or report.

Helliday · 21/08/2017 22:32

My DS reacted to cashew at 16 months. It was the scariest day of my life watching helpless as he swelled and his body became covered head to toe in hives.

Luckily he was blue lighted to hospital within 10mins, not so easy on an plane.

He's a beautiful toddler now and avoiding nuts and tree nuts (allergic to both) is the cause of much stress. Restaurants, parties, celebrations, Xmas, Easter etc the worry never leaves.

He's such a good boy and do accepting of his allergies and not being able to eat what everyone else is. But seeing his face drop when once again he can't have a biscuit/chocolate/ ice cream is so heartbreaking.

At the risk of feeding the troll again, do you hell agree with it.

Iwanttobe8stoneagain · 21/08/2017 22:50

Ridiculous idea. Haven't read the article, and it is of course tragic for the individual concerned whoever they are, however it is not true to say that nut allergies are so wide spread that nuts ought to be banned. In fact what needs to happen is that there needs to be a greater study conducted into how nut allergies have become such a thing when they previously weren't.

This exactly!!!

The last 2 holidays I've heard this announcement. When I was at school in the 80s/90s I never came across anyone with a nut allergy. Now there's 3in DS class. The school ban nuts and kiwi. People look in horror if you feed child a peanut butter sandwich. I'm a firm believer in the hygiene hypothesis and we are making it worse by banning things. One of my friends DSs has pet triggered asthma, should he insist animals are banned from all public places?

4691IrradiatedHaggis · 21/08/2017 22:54

When I was at school in the 80s/90s I never came across anyone with a nut allergy.

So because you've never come across one before, that makes it automatically made up and it doesn't exist?
Seriously. Step outside of your bubble. Read the rest of the thread and gain a perspective into others experiences.

Willow2017 · 21/08/2017 22:58

Nobody is saying ban nuts everywhere. If a person is going to come in contact with nuts in the airport and have a reaction then they are ON THE GROUND where they have medical staff. They are also within driving distance to a hospital by paramedics! Same as if they were in a shop or a cafe or on the street.

Fuck all use in calling 999 when you are 30,000 feet up.

4691IrradiatedHaggis · 21/08/2017 22:59

There's a difference between banning in public places and banning on a plane though that you're ignoring or unaware of.
On a plane, there's nowhere to go. You can't escape the airborne nut dust, it's there and you will react to it and there's no way of easily getting to a hospital over 30,000 feet and potentially thousands of miles from the nearest hospital.

4691IrradiatedHaggis · 21/08/2017 22:59

cross posted with willow.

One of the vilest things I have read on here, are you actually human?

Society needs a lot of thing you GF but it doesnt NEED to eat peanuts on a plane.

Sirzy · 21/08/2017 23:01

There are places pets are banned from though and allergies are one of the reasons for that.

Ds has pet triggered asthma so I always book caravans/hotels which are pet free and contact them to explain the importance of that.

mirialis · 21/08/2017 23:03

Yep and ASD, dyslexia, ADHD didn't exist either, but now we just need excuses for our naughty/thick kids Hmm

Willow2017 · 21/08/2017 23:04

Iwant

Dont be so silly.
You cant make up a proper allergic reaction did you even see the picture I posted? How the hell do you make that up?

Public places - the clue is in the name. You can walk away from a pet dog, where the jeff do you think you can go on a plane if there is someone eating nuts beside you?

LegoNinjago · 21/08/2017 23:04

Bluntness100 Air bourn nut allergy to the extent portrayed in the media is pretty much a myth, you cannot get a reaction because someone at rhe other end of the plane is eating nuts.

Bluntness, I'm sorry but you are an absolute idiot.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 21/08/2017 23:08

Dd is allergic to horses

We didnt find out til she went to a horse riding party

Swelled up like a barrage balloon...some reactions you can't fake

Ijustwantaquietlife · 21/08/2017 23:09

I can't believe some people are so selfish!

I have a very restrictive diet and therefore a large part of my diet is nuts so most of the food I wouldn't be able to eat on a nut free flight. But I'd have no problems not eating it for 10+ hours of it was a danger to someone else! We can survive for 3 weeks without eating ffs.
