To think they should just ban nuts on all flights

Ijustwantaquietlife · 21/08/2017 15:45

Just reading this and it's heartbreaking, seems like such a simple change to ban nuts on all flights to help protect people.

I've heard several people on mn saying they've been on flights where they were banned, seams to make sense as nut allergies are so widespread to just ban all together imo.

Where will it all end ?

Well obviously nuts will have to be sold on the black market and you will have to purchase them illegally to get your fix illegally, whilst the self-righteous and the "bad-language" users take over the world.

We won't be able to say you didn't warn us.

BearsDontDigOnDancing · 21/08/2017 19:15

Say a child really loves nuts. Not allowed to have peanut butter on toast before school, not allowed to take any peanut containing product to school, not allowed to have peanut products in the evening in case traces remain. So basically never allowed to eat nuts except maybe on a Saturday. Say 398 kids in a school love nuts, but 2 kids are allergic - this means none of the other 398 kids are allowed to eat something they absolutely love. How is this fair on the 398?

Because you can live without nuts. Someone could DIE if in contact or even in the same room. Even if it is only 1 out of 400. The right to an optional food does not trump the right to not be harmed. Hardly fucking rocket science is it. Jeez.

My kids really love chocolate cake, they probably would love to have it for breakfast, lunch and tea, they get it rarely as a treat. They seem completely not traumatised by this. Just because you love something does not mean you should have it every day does it?

What a ridiculous argument.

SenatorBunghole · 21/08/2017 19:17

An allergy is also not an intolerance. Being intolerant to dairy isn't going to kill you if you sit in a seat where someone was eating cheese.

Indeed. Take it from someone who can't have the stuff.

allegretto · 21/08/2017 19:17

Nobody needs nuts on a flight. They should definitely be banned.

Thank you for responding. I don't really worry about posters on the internet. It is all forgotten in a day or two anyway isn't it. This is a topic of the moment, not worth being horrible to anyone really. But such is life.

Much love,
Pollyanna.

Backtoblack1 · 21/08/2017 19:21

I didn't think so but after seeing the producer on This Morning earlier, I definitely think they should. Please watch if you haven't seen it. It is heartbreaking 😕

Would you honestly be ok saying to a parent, "I'm really sorry your child died but unfortunately, my child likes a peanut butter sandwich for his lunch"

Are you that selfish, you genuinely believe your child wanting nuts is more important than keeping a child alive?

Would you be ok knowing you could be the cause of someone's death, even though you have been told no nuts at school, you still think it's ok?

You sound really really horrible.

bruffin · 21/08/2017 19:25

Bears

The problem is that it is not just nuts that cause anaphylaxis. My ds is allergic to seeds and treet nuts ( not peanuts) he is allergic to both ingredients of Houmous but you never see it banned, it is just as allergenic as a peanut butter sandwich.
As said above friend had anaphylaxis to a cheese sandwich on a plane, because he had penicillin allergy.
Dairy, fish and many other foods cause anaphylaxis but people have to cope with those allergins, its no different.
Education about hand washing is far better than banning as per the anaphylaxis society guidelines.

sunglassally · 21/08/2017 19:29

So many allergies out there.

Those with non peanut allergies may feel they are second class if nuts are banned on planes and their allergies are not catered for also.

I do realise that peanut allergy can be fatal BTW before any keyboard warrior decides to have a go at me.

Where will it end.

Hidingalion · 21/08/2017 19:30

Yeah, Sally, where will it all end? After the nut ban, we might raise our awareness gradually of everything that makes life difficult and potentially deadly for certain groups of people, and decide that our ignorant need to enjoy things doesn't trump their right to live.
So, heck, we might end up living in a world where for you and me, our privilege is a tiny bit reduced, in many areas, and for other people, life is a whole load better.
Wouldn't that be awful.
Get a fucking grip.

Bombardier25966 · 21/08/2017 19:31

Banning nuts would be impossible to do world wide.

But not impossible to enforce nationally, or EU wide.

I like nuts, but I don't see the fixation on having to have them when you fly. If you're desperate for a salt fix eat some Pringles. Or work out why your diet is so poor that you can't go a few hours without eating crap.

4691IrradiatedHaggis · 21/08/2017 19:33

Those with non peanut allergies may feel they are second class if nuts are banned on planes and their allergies are not catered for also.

That's just such a non argument. Airborne nut allergies are life threatening. It's the dust off them that can set off reactions.
People with allergies that are none life threatening won't feel hard done by if they don't have their non life threatening allergies catered for,

Fresh8008 · 21/08/2017 19:34

Peanut particles are too heavy to be transmitted through the air. Does no one care about facts?

sunglassally · 21/08/2017 19:34

Bombardier,

We will not be in the EU soon. So anything goes.

BahHumbygge · 21/08/2017 19:35

The problem with nuts specifically and why they should be banned on planes is that when you open the bag, clouds of nut dust and protein particulates escape into the air. People have the crumbs on their hands and then brush them together to clean them, rendering more nut particles airborne. I'm sure that say, satay sauce in the airline meal would be less dangerous to allergy sufferers than bags of peanuts, though all forms of nut based food should be restricted on planes.

I don't have a horse in this race btw, besides having a friend who has a peanut allergy. He recounted to us one time how his sister was playing that game where you throw the peanut up in the air and catch it in your mouth. Even though he was the other side of the room, he could still feel himself getting wheezy and reacting. At 38,000 ft over an ocean that doesn't bear thinking about.

4691IrradiatedHaggis · 21/08/2017 19:36

Peanut particles are too heavy to be transmitted through the air. Does no one care about facts?

The "peanut dust" certainly can travel through the air and cause a reaction, so I don't know what you're quite getting at here or where you're getting your information from.

sunglassally · 21/08/2017 19:39

Fresh,

"Peanut particles are too heavy to be transmitted through the air. Does no one care about facts?"

What are the facts Fresh? We are all ears and eyes.

Well those who think it is all recycled air on a plane that can cause a tragic reaction. Tell us more please.

Antigonads · 21/08/2017 19:40

This thread just keeps on giving.

Uokbing · 21/08/2017 19:41

Say a man with a weak heart is thinking about running an ultra marathon, but he knows it could cause a heart attack and kill him. The other 999 runners really want to run the marathon. Should they cancel the entire even and not allow anyone to run in case this one man has a heart attack? Or is it up to the one man not to put himself in danger?

That is the fucking stupidest analogy I think I have ever read.

EvansOvalPies · 21/08/2017 19:44

Banning nuts would be impossible to do world wide

Of course. Impossible. But on an aircraft, which is all that is being asked? Then Yes! How hard can it be to not eat nuts for the duration of an aeroplane flight? For all the reasons stated (and ignored by some particularly obstinate numbnuts). Will I die because I can't eat a nut for a few hours OR Might someone else die because I have a nut in my very happy tummy, when I could actually have eaten something else instead. Sorry, suffering anaphylactic person. My tummy is happy though, so never mind.

bruffin · 21/08/2017 19:45

I dont think there has ever been a fatal reaction on a plane that was not caused by ingestion.

Uokbing · 21/08/2017 19:45

I don't know, how is it fair on the 2 that they might die?! Or is it just tough titties for those kids? Confused

sunglassally · 21/08/2017 19:47

There are those who have allergies even fatal ones, and those who don't,

And while everyone (I think) would not want someone to die for the want of a packet of nuts, there are others who wonder where this will all end.

Ban everything.

It might affect me

I am intolerant to......

Anyway, banning nuts on a plane is easy. Just replace it with non nut snacks.

No one will die for the want of a peanut. But it is the creeping intolerance of anything that worries me. What will be next.

Famine on board.

Wilburissomepig · 21/08/2017 19:48

Are you for real? You think it's unfair for the hypothetical 398 kids to have a different sandwich because the other 2 hypothetical kids might die if they don't?

My DD won't even eat crunch nut cornflakes in the morning just in case it affects her friend (entirely her own decision). She's 10. Shame you're not as smart and empathetic as she is.

EvansOvalPies · 21/08/2017 19:50

Bruffin - there have been several recorded of reactions, with planes having to be diverted for hospital treatment.
Does it really need to take a death to make the point?
