I don't care when they start selling Christmas stuff. Just cos they sell it does not force you to buy it. I only go into town once a fortnight, so it is not exactly forced on me.

HOW can you start shopping so early, I really don't understand!

I know what my kids want now, but no idea what they will need or want in 4 months, same for the adults. If I start buying too early, people will end up with duplicate or completely useless gifts.

As soon as the kids go back to school it's operation Christmas for us. I just love it! I regret nothing!

I do the shopping early to get a good majority in the sales saves a bomb with all of the kids.
Debenhams are the best when it comes to sales for me, the toys go up to 70% off.

I have the Christmas topic hidden because it bores the hell out of me is not very interesting. It seems a bit early for it to be leaking into the rest of MN.

Wait.... you can HIDE topics? How can I do that? And will it stop any threads in that topic appearing in my "active" threads?

Poppy You can hide topics on this page.

I also have Baby Names hidden; I find it's the best way to avoid American-bashing and the phrases "chavvy" and "trailer trash."

I work in retail and I hate how early Christmas stuff comes out ... not only because we have to endure Christmas music 8 hours a day, every day from around the end of October but we also have to deal with customers complaining about the Christmas stuff being out so early from now until the day itself.

These same people tend to be the ones who come in half an hour before closing on 24th of December and get pissed off that there's no tubs of Celebrations, extra large turkeys, wrapping paper or

YANBU, I love Christmas and plan really early, but there is no need for the specific Christmas stock in shops yet

bimbobaggins and coddi - I am one who buys throughout the year. I always buy for a specific person, even if it's only a stocking filler. My children are adults now, when they were little, I never bought anything for them until after the last birthday before Christmas, so I could be sure not to duplicate things. Nowadays, their gifts tend to be things like rac membership, or subscriptions to a particular magazine, so only small token gifts for Christmas Day itself, though these are still personalised to their interests. Other family members have gifts that relate to specific interests or hobbies. I might buy something that adds to a collection, or something that would be an indulgence. My dsis dcs are similar ages to my own, so my dcs often help out with ideas, though one dn is extremely limited for space (has a sort of 'live-in'job), so often I give them money rather than 'stuff'. I've already bought over half what I need for this year and I guarantee that if I showed the selection to any member of the family, they'd know exactly which gift was destined for which person. I wish I could tell you what I've bought this year, but that would spoil the surprise for anyone who recognised me!
I've always loved giving presents and until very recently, had to do it on a very tight budget so checking out sales, special offers, introductory offers etc has been a way if life for over 30 years. Even though we can afford more now, I still have to have a budget so shopping as I do, through the year, helps me keep to it and driver lovely gifts. I keep track of it all on an app.

I love Christmas and I will admit I have started my shopping. Not planned to - just saw a couple of things so bought them. Will clear a drawer in spare room to store and put anything I buy in there so I don't forget where it is.

However I will admit to doing a double take as I walked past a charity shop last week and spotted their xmas card display. Way too early.

I like to start thinking about it and roughly planning but don't see the need to it to be shoved in my face in August.

This is where shopping in Aldi (and perhaps Lidl) really benefits.

They don't do Christmas in any significant way until much later in the year. I do most of my shopping there and it's always a bit of a shock if I go into Tesco/Asda/Morrisons etc between about August and October to be confronted by the wall of Quality Streets in the main entrance.

They have them in so early btw because they want people to buy them, eat them, and have to buy them again several times. Or put them away 'for Christmas' only to not be able to find them and have to buy them again.

SomeOtherFuckers DP once did some work for a major supermarket to film a Christmas advert. He had to build and stock a fake supermarket with Christmas products and I'm sure it was in June one year (it was definitely in the summer). He brought me home a Poinsetta but it lost all it's red leaves within about 2 days because obviously it had been so traumatised by all the unseasonal talk of Christmas.

I like certain aspects of Christmas (time off work, seeing family, nice food and drink, winter walks, slobbing around watching films, even having a Christmas tree).

What I don't like is all the 'buy all this crap that no-one wants or needs and many don't have the money for'. Fine to buy for immediate family and especially children, but if you need several months to plan and execute Christmas, you're making far too much of it. I hope those who do this don't ever complain about the 'stress' and 'work' of Christmas.

Double VAT on all Christmas goods say until the clocks go back and then this would go away

^^Brilliant idea.

I think having children is a very good reason to keep to the rhythms of the year.

I'm looking forward to
counting down to back to school
making jam and chutney
Crunchy autumn leaves
DD singing Harvest Festival hymns
A few nice days outside, outings with the dogs
An October half term break
Slow cooker meals,
Crumbles
Halloween (only a bit)
Bonfire night
Ordering coal

I don't want my DC to miss out on Autumn. Strangely, they have always managed to be excited about Christmas, even without starting in summer.
