I work in a pub and we had to put our Christmas booking display up a month ago. We're already fully booked for Christmas day!

I love Christmas and have already done half my present shopping (to spread the cost!!), but I agree that August is too early for shops to get Christmassy. I think they should wait till November. People who want to, can still get prepared now but without it being in everyone's faces too early!

it is also to spare the rest of us from dealing with or thinking about Xmas in August etc

Yes, it is. I was VERY proactive in getting it established for that very reason (I really struggled with Christmas for a few years, I'm still not back to my old self about it, so I do understand) and I agree all of the 'AIBU to think my MIL can cook the turkey this year' threads belong there. However, I don't think this thread does because people there aren't going to think it's too early, whereas the rest of us mostly do. It's like posting 'Gardening is dull' in the Gardening Topic. It's the place to talk about Gardening, not to diss it...iykwim.

I think they should wait till November.

They wouldn't get everything done if they did that.

I'm glad things are starting to appear in shops. It makes buying on a budget a whole lot easier when I can start now

Or, you could simply put the money to one side.

In my new world order (as Rev Richard Coles says on Twitter) I would genuinely make it illegal to advertise anything using the word Christmas until 1 December with the possible exception of cards due to overseas posting, which would be permitted in November. There really is no need for it whatsoever.

There isn't an argument in the world that would persuade me that even thinking about Christmas in AUGUST is a good idea.

I'm still enjoying the summer holiday.

I love christmas and buy in the sales all year round so i have done about half of my shopping already. It saves no end when you have a big family
I can feel christmassy at any time and indeed dd and I have just finished watching Nativity. We love that film !
Dont really care if others think i am mad as it makes me happy and with some of the crap that is going on in my family atm re serious illness etc i grab every little bit of happiness i can these days !

Now, I like Christmas, I really do. But at the proper time of year, which is about mid November, IMHO.

Right now, I want to enjoy the last of the summer and the start of Autumn. The only Christmas preparations that should be going on right now are making chutney and sloe gin.

I recommend you never work in a shop with a heavy focus on seasons then.

It spoils Christmas for me when we get it shoved in our faces half the year. When I was a kid in the 70s and 80s the Christmas season didn't start till November, it allowed us all just the right amount of time to get properly excited.
People can still shop through the year why do they need the shops to be decorated? Or do what we did back in the day and save up!

YANBU - all Christmas tat or even the mention of the word should be banned until one week before Christmas Day. I would personally ban it until the 24th but feel that's too harsh for some people who lose sense of reality when the tat hits the high street Grin

Unless it is due to budget constraints why are people even thinking of Christmas now? Confused

One of the reasons I become less and less enamoured of Christmas is that it is spread over such a long period of time that it isn't special any more.

We need a campaign to keep Christmas at Christmas and not several months before.

Every time I read posts like this it just makes me feel more curmudgeonly about Christmas. OP you are so not BU, but the posters who are saying that you are are being VVU.

I think we need an anti-Christmas support group for those of us who just aren't into it at all.

Any takers?

I love Christmas, but it does spoil that christmasey and wintery feeling when the shops start going Christmas crazy in September and October Angry I agree with PP about by the time it actually gets to Christmas lot of people are sick of it because it's been spammed everywhere for 3 months!!
I was channel flicking last night and came across the Not Going Out Christmas special and the Only fools and horses Christmas specials Hmm

Yanbu. If it was up to me Xmas wouldn't start until 25th Nov. A months run up is plenty.

If it was up to me Christmas would start on 1st December when Advent starts.
