brittbugs - do you not ask people what they would like?

I would love to be so organised, but have to wait for the annual lists to come in. Both my family & DH's do lists (really not that many people, not huge families) - but that does mean there's no chance of Christmas shopping early!

Also, my DCs change their minds daily, almost, if I asked them what they wanted now it would have changed 10 times by Christmas!

Fluffypinkpyjamas · 21/08/2017 15:11

YANBU and I really really really LOVE Christmas with a obsessive passion but...

myshinynewusername · 21/08/2017 15:11

PicardsCombOver - I shit you not. It was a fully decorated Christmas tree, but it was daylight, so the lights weren't on.

They also had some of that fake frost spray around the window.

custardcreamplease · 21/08/2017 15:13

I used to do the whole buying presents throughout the year to spread the cost thing....ended up losing track of what I'd bought, losing the presents which then appeared again in February... I was thoroughly sick of Christmas by the 24th.

Now I'm saving with Park, won't have the vouchers until the end of November, so I'm going to go and do a proper old fashioned all-at-once Christmas shop, get it over and done with and then enjoy the season...none of this a bit here, a bit there

I love Autumn and I think from Harvest to Halloween is a very special time of year on its own account. It doesn't need to be dominated by Christmas

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 21/08/2017 15:15

I recommend you never work in a shop with a heavy focus on seasons then

Thanks for thatSmile, job not in retail so it's not something I need to think about.

I blame the weather, it feels like October here - which is when I start booking the Father Christmas visits and Ocado release their Christmas week delivery slots, and so I need to have a "are we hosting or going to someone else's house?" conversation prior to that. (The idea of waiting to November makes me stressed, I don't do shopping on the week before Christmas, and hate actually going to the shops, I want everything at least booked for delivery well in advance so I can just enjoy the whole festive season without having to rush about getting stressed like my Mum always did)

Brittbugs80 · 21/08/2017 15:18

Luckily, our families are very routine and we have always got each other the same each Christmas. They also get an extra surprise present.

DS main present hasn't been decided yet and I've just finished saving for DH's main present. He doesn't make a list as he likes surprises.

PoppyPopcorn · 21/08/2017 15:19

I have worked in the Head Office of a retail business and what's true is that although Christmas comes early, it's finished early too. We'd start our Christmas range planning in February. Orders would be placed and buyers would start work on pricing in Spring. POS would be designed, signed off and printed by August. Stores would get stock in September/October. From our point of view, by mid October it was "done" and we were on to worrying about January sales and spring promotions.

BarbaraofSevillle · 21/08/2017 15:22

If shops 'focused on the seasons' then Christmas wouldn't even be on their radar until after bonfire night.

No need to start before then. If you want to spread the cost just save the money up.

Unicorn81 · 21/08/2017 15:23

Ah you wont want to visit the christmas thread then, thats in full swing now

TheEagle · 21/08/2017 15:23

YANBU

I love Christmas but it's August FFS!

I was in my local supermarket on Saturday and felt cross that the satsumas had black-and-orange Hallowe'en-style wrapping.

If I'm not ready to talk about Hallowe'en, I'm definitely not ready to talk about Christmas.

TheLegendOfBeans · 21/08/2017 15:24

I'm bang up for Christmas this year; if it was a big swimming pool I'd be diving right in because:

We'll be back in the UK by then
I'll have had my baby
I'll be better after my CS
Wine

Lweji · 21/08/2017 15:27

I saw pet Christmas stockings at my local supermarket yesterday. It's not even in the UK. Sigh.

Dinosaurgalore · 21/08/2017 15:33

yanbu about the shops already having the Christmas stuff in but having said that I did do DS Christmas list this morning, so will be getting the bigger stuff over a few pay checks and then smaller stuff in November and any last minute inspirations.

I do love Christmas though, all cosy at home just me dh, and ds, playing whatever game ds has got that year, watching crap Christmas telly, wine and a roast. Getting all wistful thinking about it.

CancellyMcChequeface · 21/08/2017 15:33

YANBU. The earlier I hear talk about Christmas, the more curmudgeonly I get over it. Save it for December. If people want to shop for presents or start budgeting for Christmas early, that's up to them, but no shop displays in August FFS. It was bad enough when they started right after Halloween.

I'm an unrepentant Scrooge and would happily skip the whole thing. Grin

gwenneh · 21/08/2017 15:43

TheLegendOfBeans I am jealous. While I love spending Christmas in the US with my family, this is going to be our first Christmas outside of the UK as a family.

I need to start thinking about my British Corner Shop online order for Christmas essentials!

BananaSandwichesEveryDay · 21/08/2017 15:56

It's never too early for Christmas! I'm always on the lookout for gift ideas. When I see something, especially if it's a good price, I buy. In fact, only this weekend I was looking at everything I've bought for this year and thinking about getting it wrapped over the next week or so. I've already managed to buy for the majority of people on my list. Putting money aside doesn't help as often the things I see are not available nearer Christmas. A few of the gifts have been purchased on days out and were bought at the place of origin, a couple are not available to buy anywhere else. Plus, as a family, we have a lot of birthdays in the last three months of the year, so buying early really helps spread the cost. 🎄 🎄 🎄

The80sweregreat · 21/08/2017 15:57

I've seen the big plastic tubs of chocs for sale and a sign outside a pub ' book here for christmas!' - ( no thanks)
on facebook people are still putting up their holiday snaps or are still on holiday. its insane. Kids havent even gone back to school yet in England.

bimbobaggins · 21/08/2017 16:18

I love Christmas and I love it when stuff starts to appear in shops, I get quite excited. Definitely can't buy the chocolate in advance though or I need to rebuy it about 4 times.
I usually wait and ask people what they want and often wonder about people who buy all year round in sales etc, do you just buy random items and assign it to people at the time.

For anyone who doesn't know, there's a specific Christmas topic open 365 days a year

MusicToMyEars800 · 21/08/2017 16:19

80's hi there Saturday night trash tv friend Grin I know it's madness, my 2 don't go back to school for another 2 weeks, and we haven't even had Halloween yet!!

MusicToMyEars800 · 21/08/2017 16:28

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 21/08/2017 16:36

Oh, and I should add, not only do I have to wait until lists have come in - I also have a brother who won't countenance talk of Christmas until 1st December. So by the time he's had a think, his list will generally be e-mailed across around the 18th. A week to go - plenty of time! Hmm
