I'm dreading Christmas this year. My DFather is in a nursing home now and won't be leaving. I will be seeing him on Christmas Day for as long as I can and sure as hell won't be feeling jolly and festive afterwards. I'm going to forget it this year.

I was asked to write a Christmas carol for a choir for this year in January with a delivery date for August (so they can begin rehearsing it in Autumn). I'd finished it by Jan 31st (trying to be efficient and avoid a last minute panic)

If shops 'focused on the seasons' then Christmas wouldn't even be on their radar until after bonfire night.

Not true; some seasons are bigger than others. Hence Christmas stuff coming out before Halloween, because Halloween is not a huge holiday here.

(And as a pp pointed out, head office and the seasonal departments start Christmas very early on in the year to get it ready to us. It's all on a strict time schedule that customers never see.)

No need to start before then. If you want to spread the cost just save the money up.

Yes, there is a need, as I previously explained. Even in a small shop, there wouldn't be enough time to turn it around for Christmas if we didn't do it in phases starting in August.

Never too early. Our family are already deciding who is going where, workXmas dinner already booked, presents partly bought and the rest researched. Love it!

Oh no - this makes me want to cry. I(used to) love Christmas, but not 4 months in advance. By the time the day comes it's a huge anti climax and all I'm thinking is, thank God it's over.
My DCs know not to mention the C-word too early.

YANBU I love Christmas - I'm practically an elf from the middle of November onwards but this is pushing it a bit, I haven't even got all of the school uniform sorted yet!

At the risk of missing the point of the festive season Grin what makes me so happy is the tubs of Christmas sweets, then Halloween sweets and then more Christmas sweets and then Creme Eggs: lovely stuff.

YANBU. One of the few things I would import from the US is not starting all this until late November.

Double VAT on all Christmas goods say until the clocks go back and then this would go away.

Those of you who adore Christmas: do you have small children, do you live near your families, are your parents still alive and well and do you have large families (I don't mean lots of children, but siblings, nephews, nieces etc)?

The answer to all of the above for us is no, and Christmas just does not feel magical any more. DD is the youngest child at 17 in both of our families, we have one living parent between us and she has alzheimers, we live nowhere near our families, and seeing them at Christmas is expensive because it would involve staying in a hotel (if we can get one). I just don't find Christmas exciting or fun any more. If I could go somewhere warm and sunny for the Christmas period where they don't celebrate Christmas I would.

by the time Christmas finally arrives, we will be so sick of it , the season is spoilt for everybody, it's ridiculous.
It's ONE DAY! I love Christmas, and at a push December with all the decorations and parties that go with it, but so much fuss so early is annoying.

We haven't even finished our summer holidays yet, are due to take the kids away again to see some sun or they will end up with rickets, let alone book the October holidays and plan the Halloween party (plus the numerous birthdays in between), why focusing so much on ONE DAY in December when there is so much happening in between!

Book your flights early if you go away, but Christmas cards... Confused

Lonicera

My mum who had whopping MH issues guaranteed that Christmas every year after I was about 7 was crap.

So I didn't care too much about Christmas especially once she died and I really had nowhere to go on the 25th and was repeatedly the spare part at someone else's family meal.

My first Christmassy Christmas was 2016; DD was 10 months. She was a bit too young to get it but seeing her in amongst the wrapping paper was magic.

This year she'll be 22 months and baby #2 will be ~8 weeks and I'll be able to have a wee prosecco too. Really and truly for the honest to god first time in about 25 years I'm pumped for the day itself 👊

YABU! I've nearly finished my Christmas shopping!!!

Currently looking for Christmas scented candles!Grin
I just love Christmas and making my daughter and nieces and nephews really happy and exited in the run up to Christmas.

I'd never put decorations up or do Christmas activities before December 1st but I'm a serial planner and like to be very prepared.

I don't encourage the kids to get exited before December either.
On December 1st we like to tell the nieces and nephews (and this year my own daughter) what the meaning of Christmas is and why we start celebrating.
