It's been around for a while, and if I've misheard it, please do correct me.
Little Mix, 'Sad Songs'. Here we go...

'So tonight, I'm going to get my mind of it, don't care that someone's got his hands all over my body'

WHAT???

You're upset, trying to take your mind of it, in a club, someone's groping you and you're not bothered?

Makes me feel ill every time I hear it. And having done a lot of driving this weekend with kids who will not listen to anything but Capital, I've heard it a lot.

Not the monkey one?!

Knit fast. i think this may be up your alley

Booboo66 · 22/08/2017 18:56

I think most modern songs sound pretty disturbing when your 7 year old is singing them on karaoke. Even ed Sheeran as wholesome as he might seem. Thankfully kids don't seem to mention or think too deeply about what they mean!

How about this lovely offering, by Milow

YOU AND ME (IN MY POCKET)

I wish you smelled a little funny
Not just funny really bad
We could roam the streets forever
Just like cats but we'd never stray

I sometimes wish you were a mermaid
I could raise you in the tub at home
We could take a swim together
On weekly day trips to the bay
Oh you and me
It would be only you and me
Oh you and me
It would be only you and me you me

I wish you were a little bigger
Not just big but really fat
Doors you would no longer fit through
In my bed you would have to stay
I often wish that you had feathers
I'd keep you in a giant cage
All day long I'd sit and watch you
I'd sing for you and that would be okay
Oh you and me
It would be only you and me
Oh you and me
It would be only you and me you me

People say there are plenty of fish
In the sea, baby, all I do is wish
I wish, I wish, I wish you were a little slower
Not just slow but paralyzed
Then I could plug you into a socket
So you could never run away
I really wish that you were smaller
Not just small but really really short
So I could put you in my pocket
And carry you around all day
Oh you and me
It would be only you and me
Oh you and me
It would be only you and me you and me
You and me

You and me

Little Mix produce puerile crap (as do many 'artists' today...) I'd expect no less from them tbh. It's a shame lots of young people look up to them.

kyph09 · 22/08/2017 19:20

I worked in a pet shop as a teen and remember asking a little boy about 5 or 6 years old what he was going to call his hamster. He replied that he was going to name it after his favourite song which happened to be "Horny" by Mousse T. Grin Horny the Hamster!

PicturesJane · 22/08/2017 19:20

My friend at work was telling me about an Ed Sheehan song that talks about bleaching an a@&*hole - which she heard for the first time in the car with a captive audience of her six year old daughter ... anther friend told me about a Katy Perry song that led his daughter to look up "having sex in high heels" on her iPad and not really understanding the results. I'm sure these artists all would like to think they appeal to grown ups but they must realise the average age of their audience is about 7. I mean bleaching your bum ... who even does that ?

ItsNachoCheese · 22/08/2017 19:25

dustarr its not disgusting its just a bit on the rude side lol

strawberrisc · 22/08/2017 19:25

My daughter was little when Mika's "Lollipop" was out. Very cringeworthy to hear a four year ild sing relentlessly.

Ski37 · 22/08/2017 19:33

Wow - this thread has certainly been an eye opener!
I remember Sweat ( a la la la la long) being played at my school disco and on the radio ( it was one of my favourite tunes ) but the lyrics were changed to "make you dance some more" instead of push it! - does anyone else remember this change?
I'm a fan big fan of The Doors and can't believe I never really listened to the lyrics of 'Alabama song'- I just thought it was a catchy tune ..... not any more!

friendlyflicka · 22/08/2017 19:34

"Ultraviolence" by Lana Del Ray is a beautiful song, but the lyrics are disturbing, especially "he hit me and it felt like a kiss". I read somewhere that she doesn't sing that line live any more.

That is a quote from the Crystals. They had a hugely successful song called 'He Hit me and Felt like a Kiss' produced by Phil Spector

ILoveMillhousesDad · 22/08/2017 19:34

Well I know rhianna songs are rude, but I had heard wild thoughts on the radio, and played it on the alexa when I got home.

Well bloody hell. I was horrified. So glad dd wasn't in the kitchen.

During the rap bit something like

'i heard that pussy was for the taking, gonna fuck ya till it's cremated'

It made me feel ill.

Horrible

I know Blurred Lines has been mentioned, and Pharrell's crown slipped after being involved with it, but the Feelings song that's out is even more gross, the rap part which says 'I gave up all my exes for your exit holes'*

Pharell's crown was never really there. Have you heard the song Lapdance when he was in N.E.R.D early 2000s. The video was grim. The female lyrics said "Ooh baby, you want me? Well you can have this lapdance here for free".

Remember when he did that song called She Wants To Move? He sang "She makes me feel like lightning in skies. Her ass is a spaceship I want to ride..."

Also it's not exit holes 😂😂😂😂 I read the lyrics. It's exes and oh's - probably a reference to the recent song Exes and Oh's by Elle King.

lolololol · 22/08/2017 19:43

Showing my age here but I remember singing 'like a virgin' by Madonna back in the day. My mum was horrified and told me off every time she heard me... I was oblivious Confused just loved the song. Most of the lyrics go over kids heads I think. It's us oldies that really listen to the 'meaning'. Although I do agree that some songs are totally inappropriate for kids... and me sometimes Hmm

Imbeingunreasonable · 22/08/2017 19:44

YY to Rammstein - we once got my French teacher who also spoke fluent German to translate the lyrics of Sonne for us at school. She had to stop as it was tooooo rude - pure filth! 🤣 I miss those days

Imbeingunreasonable · 22/08/2017 19:56

Lol I didn't understand for one second the lyrics to Papa Don't Preach and yet I sang it all the time. I thought it was Poppadum Peach. I was about 5 Blush

Avesy · 22/08/2017 19:57

Sex sells, let's face it plus shock factor.

Does anyone remember Barbie Girl by Aqua from mid nineties. My work colleague had a young dd at the time and was upset that she was singing 'you can touch me there, caress me everywhere'. I really felt for her as it was a catchy song and played repeatedly on commercial radio. Can you imagine my horror when my ds and dd discovered it a few years ago on YouTube! Nuff said.

MajorBumsore · 22/08/2017 20:13

Smack my bitch up is not about violence against women, although it is a vile phrase!

I soon as i saw this thread i thought "i bet Young Girl gets mentioned" because it always does. Young Girl was a song that my friends and I (all 15 and still at school) loved and identified with. It was 1968 and times were a lot more innocent. Most of us didn't go further than a kiss anyway and the song was about a girl who looked older than her years (which we all try to do at that age) and a boy who was about 18 or 19 who on realising she was too young didn't try and take things further. There was nothing sordid or wrong with the song. We all absolutely adored the gorgeous Gary Puckett too.

Lillyringlet · 22/08/2017 20:22

Stay away from average sevenfold if you think that is bad

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 22/08/2017 20:31

I love Pharrell and N.E.R.D it's not really music for a young audience

Rihanna and I think Nicki Minaj is giving as good as she gets from male rap artists and often tongue in cheek what should her songs be about going to church on Sunday

Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald sang about taking coke, many Beatles songs were about sex and Marvin Gaye sang very sexually explicit songs (not talking about Sexual Healing which is just creepy

It's always been there

Fuckitletshavevino · 22/08/2017 20:39

The majority if not all of the songs made since the 90's and I'm sure many years before. Even Tina Turners simply the best says "I call you when I need you, my heart's on fire. You come to me, come to me wild and wired. Oh, you come to me, give me everything I need". How many times have you sang that and not once thought it inappropriate? It is just a song a great song. There is no hiding from the lyrics actual meanings. Just sing away and enjoy Wine

dustarr73 · 22/08/2017 20:42

I'm sure there's loads of meanings in songs if we looked.
Plus to be fair, adults can so g what they want.If a 14 year old sang blurred lines or Like A Virgin I might agree.

But why should adults songs not have adult themes.

MyBonnieLiesOverTheOcean · 22/08/2017 20:43

Bobby Brown by Frank Zappa is by far the worst song lyrics I have ever heard. This will out me big time, but it was recently played at a funeral I went to. Just imagine sitting there while a coffin is brought in to the following gems:

"I got a cheerleader here wants to help with my paper
Let her do all the work 'n' maybe later I'll rape her"

"Women's Liberation
Came creepin' across the nation
I tell you people, I was not ready
When I fucked this dyke by the name of Freddie"

"Oh God I am the American dream
With a spindle up my butt till it makes me scream"

"Oh God, Oh God, I'm so fantastic!
Thanks to Freddie, I'm a sexual spastic"

Truly memorable.
