It's been around for a while, and if I've misheard it, please do correct me.
Little Mix, 'Sad Songs'. Here we go...

'So tonight, I'm going to get my mind of it, don't care that someone's got his hands all over my body'

WHAT???

You're upset, trying to take your mind of it, in a club, someone's groping you and you're not bothered?

Makes me feel ill every time I hear it. And having done a lot of driving this weekend with kids who will not listen to anything but Capital, I've heard it a lot.

Both the Doors and David Bowie did a cover of Kurt Weil's Alabama Whisky Bar Song. Rather catchy, in a somewhat sleazy sort of way then there's the second verse! (this is the Doors version, I think , but Bowie had other verses)

Well, show me the way
To the next whisky bar
Oh, don't ask why
Oh, don't ask why

Show me the way
To the next whisky bar
Oh, don't ask why
Oh, don't ask why

For if we don't find
The next whisky bar
I tell you we must die
I tell you we must die
I tell you, I tell you
I tell you we must die

Oh, moon of Alabama
We now must say goodbye
We've lost our good old mama
And must have whisky, oh, you know why

Oh, moon of Alabama
We now must say goodbye
We've lost our good old mama
And must have whisky, oh, you know why

Well, show me the way
To the next little girl
Oh, don't ask why
Oh, don't ask why

Show me the way
To the next little girl
Oh, don't ask why
Oh, don't ask why

For if we don't find
The next little girl
I tell you we must die
I tell you we must die
I tell you, I tell you
I tell you we must die

Oh, moon of Alabama
We now must say goodbye
We've lost our good old mama
And must have whisky, oh, you know why

I know Blurred Lines has been mentioned, and Pharrell's crown slipped after being involved with it, but the Feelings song that's out is even more gross, the rap part which says 'I gave up all my exes for your exit holes'

Shock

wtf?

Or the hideous Point Break's 'freaky time' : I give you 'You want me all the way up I want you half way down'

Sexually explicit / charged lyrics may not be the worst thing in the world, but in pop songs that are easily accessible to younger children is where it gets really depressing, it's the messages they are being given

Clawdy · 21/08/2017 22:53

"Little girl" in a lyric, especially in older songs certainly does not mean a child, any more than calling someone "baby" or "babe" means they are a real baby! People need to stop reading things into songs that just don't exist.

ItsNachoCheese · 21/08/2017 22:57

Anaconda by nicki minaj is bloody awful!

PickAChew · 21/08/2017 23:02

I understand that it means a young woman, Clawdy but how young is the question? Late teens? Just legal? Underage? Given a lot of what went on in the 60s and 70s (and no doubt before and definitely since) it's very hard to listen to that lyric without feeling very uncomfortable.

PidgeonSpray · 21/08/2017 23:03

"My cunt is built like a wound that won't heal"

(I think she was abused/raped)

So I don't think it's a disgusting lyric but disturbing due to the context.

A Very powerful metaphor

MyDarlingWhatIfYouFly · 21/08/2017 23:14

"Ultraviolence" by Lana Del Ray is a beautiful song, but the lyrics are disturbing, especially "he hit me and it felt like a kiss". I read somewhere that she doesn't sing that line live any more.

kennypppppppp · 21/08/2017 23:17

BIll Oddie
BIll Oddie

Tame by today's standards, but two from the 80s that make me want to punch the radio...
'The little faggot with the earring and the make-up' - Money For Nothing
'Black panties with an angel's face' - Abracadabra

nursy1 · 22/08/2017 00:01

I hate that one that goes....
" I don't care who you areeee
What you did
So long as you love me"

Self esteem girl!!!

Chiselle · 22/08/2017 00:12

Nursy that's the Backstreet Boys ha. But yes probably in need of self esteem.

SoftDay · 22/08/2017 05:00

Ah, I fecking LOVE My Neck, My Back!! I think it's so shocking simply because it's such a flagrant expression of female sexual assertiveness. The woman as subject, not object. You don't hear that every day. The video is wonderful, too, in its subversion of every tired old sexist rap cliche. Cheers me up mightily every time I see or hear it!

RebootYourEngine · 22/08/2017 05:23

I cant get worked up about song lyrics.

If you like the song listen to it. If you dont like the song dont listen to it.

Elledouble · 22/08/2017 07:18

Surely the whole point of "You're Gorgeous" is that the sexes are reversed? And that it's saying that some of the stuff done in the name of beauty is kind of disturbing?

anniemac1984 · 22/08/2017 08:15

Ha softday funnily enough my 14 year old starting singing that the other day and I was horrified but it did bring back some fond old skool rnb memories 😬
And made me realise how we've had very sexualised songs in our day. Look at til I come by 9pm or frankie goes to Hollywood..

I do remember My mum banned me from singing salt and peppers let's talk about sex ha

Penny4UrThoughts · 22/08/2017 08:20

The stay cat blues by the rolling stones. Basically says I don't need your Id to know you are 15 (clearly she looks young), but fucking you isn't a capital offence so I won't get hung for it. I paraphrase, but that's the jist.

Allwashedup · 22/08/2017 09:02

I Touch Myself - Divinyls
People Are Still Having Sex - Latour
Grin

dustarr73 · 22/08/2017 09:16

Dodgy lyrics have always been around. When i listened to Madonna in teh 80s,her lyrics where out there. It didnt make me in to a raging nympho.

Kids just sing the songs, they dont understand teh content. And i think some people are reading to much into it.

AngeloMysterioso · 22/08/2017 09:39

Little mix is aimed at 5-15 year olds

Clearly, they aren't. They're aimed at women their own age.

Personally, I struggle to think of a Rihanna song from the last 4 or 5 albums that isn't about sex and/or drugs and/or violence which kind of pisses me off... she's completely one dimensional. Beyoncé is heading that way too

FlyingElbows · 22/08/2017 09:44

Closer is possibly the best song in the whole world (it's between that and Sin), but there are way way worse lyrics out there.

I saw the "you're gorgeous" guy interviewed and he said he was frequently horrified by the number of people that had that song at their weddings with clearly absolutely no understanding of what it's saying.

CurlsandCurves · 22/08/2017 09:45

@Whathaveidone I done an interesting thread?

Woohoo! Go me!

I'm fairly new, so very chuffed.

I remember when Relax by Frankie Goes to Hollywood was out - i was about 8 1/2, i know it was rude cos it'd been banned but had no idea how in my innocence.

noeffingidea · 22/08/2017 10:07

pickachew the original Alabama song had 'little boys' in the lyric. It's actually been covered by a lot of people. It seems to be some sort of classic for some reason.

AnnieKenney · 22/08/2017 17:43

Sting - every breath you take (aka the stalkers anthem)
Tom Jones - Delilah

BUT love the alternative version of blurred lines
