To report her for tax evasion?

I know of someone who is making around £1k a week, but hardly declares any of her income (she doesn't pay any tax at all so declaring less that £10k of it). She also claims tax credits.

I don't particularly like this person and am tempted to report her. Problem is, pretty much all the money she receives is in cash, so is there any way that the HMRC would actually be able to prove or disprove what she's earning?

£1k a week turnover or profit? If profit, that's a hell of a profit margin. What is she selling for that money? I want in!

OP what kind of problems has she caused you, and how do you know how much money she is making?

Are you sure that her 'profits' constitute taxable income?

HMRC have access to a lot of resources. They can check bank accounts, whether expenditure matches declared income etc etc etc. So yes, if she's cheating and they decide to take your report forward, they'll probably find the evidence they need and she'll be in trouble.

Tax fraud/benefit fraud is not a trivial crime, and the more people who are discovered doing it the better imo,so I think that you should report her. It'll possibly act as a deterrent to people who hear about it. HMRC won't care what your motives are, that's irrelevant. You can be anonymous if you wish.

Report without question. I don't really understand people saying they wouldn't. If they choose to investigate there are ways they can compare her reported earnings to her lifestyle and if the 2 don't match up then they can take it further. Once you've reported it you have to let it go, you might not hear what happens.

I have a different view. I carefully report all my income & as a result pay a lot of tax (I am in business) So I really do not like it when anyone, be it Amazon or the builder down the street, avoids taxes. If there was less tax evasion, there would be more to spend on public services.
HMRC is very good at tracking cash in hand; it is in fact better to be paid in a traceable way, as if they investigate you, and you are all cash, they assume the worst(BTW, I have been investigated, due to dodgy practices of an ex-H, so I speak with some experience.)

Well, your motive is obviously wrong, but tax evasion is a serious matter that shouldn't be ignored... it's everyone's business. I think you should report it even if your reasons aren't honourable. If they can't prove anything you've done all that a concerned citizen should do.

Regardless of the motive, I think that should be reported if she's profiting to the extent she's described.
