To report her for tax evasion?

hooveringhamabeads · 20/08/2017 12:32

I know of someone who is making around £1k a week, but hardly declares any of her income (she doesn't pay any tax at all so declaring less that £10k of it). She also claims tax credits.

I don't particularly like this person and am tempted to report her. Problem is, pretty much all the money she receives is in cash, so is there any way that the HMRC would actually be able to prove or disprove what she's earning?

Sour grapes

LoyaltyAndLobster · 20/08/2017 12:33

YABU - it's none of your business, it sounds like you want to do it out of spite.

hooveringhamabeads · 20/08/2017 12:36

She's caused me quite a lot of problems so yes being honest there is an element of thAt.

It's absolutely none of your business. I hate busy people like you who just get jealous and try and ruin someone's life just because you are not happy with your own.

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 20/08/2017 12:37

£1k a week turnover or profit? If profit, that's a hell of a profit margin. What is she selling for that money? I want in!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 20/08/2017 12:38

MYOB

hooveringhamabeads · 20/08/2017 12:39

She makes £1k in profit a week, sometimes a bit less. Can't really say what she does as it would be slightly outing!

Are you just guessing she is not paying tax and just guessing how much she makes a week?

Keep your nose out Hmm

FinallyDecidedOnUserName · 20/08/2017 12:41

Swerve no matter how much she grates on you. She will be found out somehow sooner or later.

Singyourheartout · 20/08/2017 12:41

I'm sorry but if she is actually doing that she should be reported.

hooveringhamabeads · 20/08/2017 12:41

No, not guessing. I am 100% sure.

If you know she is definitely evading tax, yes I would report her.

But only if i definitely knew and wasnt just filling in the gaps myself. Because when you fill in gaps, your opinion of the person sneaks in.

Mountainviewloo · 20/08/2017 12:43

YABVU.

stormytherabbit · 20/08/2017 12:43

Mind your business honestly. Petty as fuck.

Happytobefree17 · 20/08/2017 12:43

How are you 100% sure?

LoyaltyAndLobster · 20/08/2017 12:43

OP what kind of problems has she caused you, and how do you know how much money she is making?

stevie69 · 20/08/2017 12:45

Are you sure that her 'profits' constitute taxable income?

scrabbler3 · 20/08/2017 12:45

HMRC have access to a lot of resources. They can check bank accounts, whether expenditure matches declared income etc etc etc. So yes, if she's cheating and they decide to take your report forward, they'll probably find the evidence they need and she'll be in trouble.

Tax fraud/benefit fraud is not a trivial crime, and the more people who are discovered doing it the better imo,so I think that you should report her. It'll possibly act as a deterrent to people who hear about it. HMRC won't care what your motives are, that's irrelevant. You can be anonymous if you wish.

firsttimekat · 20/08/2017 12:45

Report without question. I don't really understand people saying they wouldn't. If they choose to investigate there are ways they can compare her reported earnings to her lifestyle and if the 2 don't match up then they can take it further. Once you've reported it you have to let it go, you might not hear what happens.

donajimena · 20/08/2017 12:46

Come on? Thats around 52k a year then? I don't believe it.

hooveringhamabeads · 20/08/2017 12:46

Thanks scrabbler, that's what I needed to know.

I have a different view. I carefully report all my income & as a result pay a lot of tax (I am in business) So I really do not like it when anyone, be it Amazon or the builder down the street, avoids taxes. If there was less tax evasion, there would be more to spend on public services.
HMRC is very good at tracking cash in hand; it is in fact better to be paid in a traceable way, as if they investigate you, and you are all cash, they assume the worst(BTW, I have been investigated, due to dodgy practices of an ex-H, so I speak with some experience.)

PoorYorick · 20/08/2017 12:47

Well, your motive is obviously wrong, but tax evasion is a serious matter that shouldn't be ignored... it's everyone's business. I think you should report it even if your reasons aren't honourable. If they can't prove anything you've done all that a concerned citizen should do.

stevie69 · 20/08/2017 12:48

Oh, it's perfectly feasible.

I don't think that you'll get the satisfaction that you might expect from reporting her, though Blush

AccrualIntentions · 20/08/2017 12:49

Regardless of the motive, I think that should be reported if she's profiting to the extent she's described.
