To report her for tax evasion?

hooveringhamabeads · 20/08/2017 12:32

I know of someone who is making around £1k a week, but hardly declares any of her income (she doesn't pay any tax at all so declaring less that £10k of it). She also claims tax credits.

I don't particularly like this person and am tempted to report her. Problem is, pretty much all the money she receives is in cash, so is there any way that the HMRC would actually be able to prove or disprove what she's earning?

Interesting that so many posters on here say you should keep your nose out. So it's ok to avoid paying tax, which is used to pay for our schools and hospitals?

LoyaltyAndLobster · 20/08/2017 13:02

honestly I am not a mean person by nature!

You claim to not be mean, but you are clearly having spiteful thoughts, you need to stay out of this and focus on your own life.

Fresh8008 · 20/08/2017 13:03

£52k a year in cash profit and she is hiding it from the tax man. How can you even do that? She must be putting it in the bank? A quick call to HMRC and they will find it easily. She is cheating us all out of tax revenue, she is effectively stealing from everyone else. YANBU

"Worth doing"

Think about what exactly you want to achieve and what outcome will have made it worth doing.

You sound like an intelligent person - IMO you'll be doing yourself a favour by putting your energy into something more constructive for the greater good than targeting one individual person, it really won't end well.

It may give some instant gratification, but a little bit dies inside when a person sneaks on their fellow human just because they can.

hooveringhamabeads · 20/08/2017 13:04

She doesn't bank it, she just pays for everything with cash.

LoyaltyAndLobster · 20/08/2017 13:05

Once again OP how do you know all of this? you must be very close to her.

Mountainviewloo · 20/08/2017 13:05

HMRC are actually way more likely to go after small scale tax evasion than the billionaires they ought to be going for.

They do have the resources.

donquixotedelamancha · 20/08/2017 13:05

I don't really see a problem with OP reporting a crime, no matter what their motivation.

I'm assuming that OP has their facts fairly straight (no choice since they insist they do). In that case the it's surely wrong and complicit to ignore someone stealing from the rest of society.

As PPs said: no real harm if it turns out the OPs nemesis is legitimate.

YouRat · 20/08/2017 13:06

I won't do something like this. I won't sleep at night.

lljkk · 20/08/2017 13:07

"She doesn't bank it, she just pays for everything with cash."

Er... so is she spending £52k/yr or does she have a fire hazard under the mattress?

Mountainviewloo · 20/08/2017 13:07

Also if she has DC consider the effect on them.

BarbaraOcumbungles · 20/08/2017 13:07

Who could spend a grand a week in cash? It isn't actually easy to pay for big things with cash - due to money laundering regs most places want bank transfers/debit card payments.

This person must be absolutely swimming in stuff!!

Wrt what I'd do - I'd MYOB.

greendale17 · 20/08/2017 13:08

Definitely report her.

Why should she be allowed to get away with not paying tax?

hooveringhamabeads · 20/08/2017 13:08

I can't say how I know all this, but I do. I realise this is possibly the dullest thread ever and I wish I could put the juicy details because trust me you would be agog (to use a good mn phrase), but as I said if I do report her I need to make sure it's anonymous so posting the ins and outs of it here probably wouldn't be a great idea.

Gemini69 · 20/08/2017 13:08

HMRC don't care about about your reasoning for Reporting someone.. if you believe she is doing something illegal...

Report it ..

BarbaraOcumbungles · 20/08/2017 13:09

Is she a prostitute?

Happytobefree17 · 20/08/2017 13:09

Is what she is doing to make the money legal?

underneaththeash · 20/08/2017 13:10

I can't believe some of the responses on here - of course you should report her. One of the reasons that Greece is so screwed up economically is widespread tax evasion and benefit fraud.

If there is no paper trail, then they may have a difficult job proving the level of her income, but at least it may force her into behaving more honestly and not committing benefit fraud.

Dina1234 · 20/08/2017 13:11

If she's claiming tax credits then do it. She stealing from the tax payer.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 20/08/2017 13:11

All those Saying MYOB ect ect.
I trust you'd say the same about a single mum earning a few pounds on the QT. Or is it a different set of rules for the rich

worridmum · 20/08/2017 13:13

So its called sneaks shame on you! If someone was commiting child abuse elderly abuse or other such crime i fucking hope to god you would NOT have the balls to call the person reporting it a sneak or a snitch

How the fuck do you think these crimes get found out there is not a tax evasion fairy that will magically discover stufg it needs to be reported. If no one reported anything sooooo much more crime would happen and not be punished.

Tax evision is no better then robbing people in the street or benifet fraud or insurnce fraud but appently its fine to not only look away but incourge others to do as well shame on you all. The people suggesting and having ago at the OP are part of the problem why our society is so shit.

Notsoaccidentproneanymore · 20/08/2017 13:13

I'd report her.

Not only is she not contributing her tax etc, so not paying her share towards public services, but she is also claiming money from the State that she isn't entitled to. A double whammy!

But I also thing there's too much tax dodging from businsses.

It's everyone's tax which goes towards schools, hospitals, road maintenance etc. everyone should pay their share. It's collective responsibility. And a crime not to do so.

If you know that someone is committing a crime, some of you don't think you have a responsibility to report? What if we all took that attitude?

hooveringhamabeads · 20/08/2017 13:13

yes what she is doing is legal and no she's not a prostitute!

OP posts:
Peachyking000 · 20/08/2017 13:13

I'm always surprised at those who don't mind others stealing from the taxpayer. YANBU to report her IMO

Jennypug · 20/08/2017 13:13

Thing is it is the OP's business. It's technically everyone's business. If she's sure on her facts, ie this woman is bringing in a hefty income, not paying her fair share of tax and then claiming tax credits then that isn't right. If everyone took that attitude we'd be in a fine old mess.
