To report her for tax evasion?

hooveringhamabeads · 20/08/2017 12:32

I know of someone who is making around £1k a week, but hardly declares any of her income (she doesn't pay any tax at all so declaring less that £10k of it). She also claims tax credits.

I don't particularly like this person and am tempted to report her. Problem is, pretty much all the money she receives is in cash, so is there any way that the HMRC would actually be able to prove or disprove what she's earning?

It is our business if she is avioding paying tax she is no better then a benefit cheat or a theif all you people having ago sayiny its none of her business where do you draw the line?

If they were drug dealing ? Scamming people? Stealing ?

Report her OP its the right thing to do what would the country be if everyone avoided paying tax.

listsandbudgets · 20/08/2017 12:50

Sorry but if this person is genuinely making about £50000 a year, not declaring most of it and claiming tax credits she is effectively stealing from the rest of us. What's petty about believing that someone should pay their rightful dues to society? - presumably she uses the NHS, schools, roads, would call police, fire service if needed etc. etc.

If the OP is sure she's right then she should report. If she is acting on the basis of suspicion and sour grapes she should leave it alone - this person will probably be caught out eventually anyway

daisychain01 · 20/08/2017 12:50

Haven't a clue if you've reported all your facts 100% accurately so impossible to say.

But just on the basis you made a point of saying you don't like her very much then I'd question your motives.

I don't like mean people coming in here to legitimise their meanness by seeing how many other people's opinions they can collect to make themselves feel better.

hooveringhamabeads · 20/08/2017 12:50

Can't really explain more about my motive without it being very outing, but I do have good reasons.

OP posts:
MelsMam · 20/08/2017 12:51

What exactly has this person done that you want so badly to destroy them? Hmm

Mountainviewloo · 20/08/2017 12:51

But it is out of spite then? Jeez.

YouRat · 20/08/2017 12:52

Does she have dc ?

daisychain01 · 20/08/2017 12:52

I am in awe of people who have such an encyclopaedic knowledge of another person's tax affairs.

It's like possessing a super-power.

worridmum · 20/08/2017 12:52

It doesnt matter about your motive shes commiting a crime you should report it no if no buts.

Viviennemary · 20/08/2017 12:53

She's a cheat. She earns quite enough to give a contribution and is claiming tax credits fraudulently as well if you've got your facts right. I think she should be reported. Why should somebody on £13K a year pay tax and not this greedy grabber.

hooveringhamabeads · 20/08/2017 12:53

I didn't post to legitimise my meanness, please believe me that if you knew the full story you'd understand better. I posted because I wanted to know if the fact that she receives cash payments would mean that HMRC wouldn't actually be able to prove anything, so I was wondering if it would be worth doing.

OP posts:
worridmum · 20/08/2017 12:53

If she reports and nothing is dogey there is no harm if there is its not the OP problem but the person commiting the crime.

hooveringhamabeads · 20/08/2017 12:54

I wish I could post the full story and you'd completely get it then, honestly I am not a mean person by nature! But that would be very, very outing and defeat the object of reporting someone anonymously.

daisychain01 · 20/08/2017 12:55

I've been a PAYE tax contributor all my working life and .... nope ... I can't muster up the motivation to ring the Sneaks Helpline to report someone. I just tend to keep my pointy beak inside my own nest. Just in case I get the full facts wrong. You never know....

Blossoming77 · 20/08/2017 12:56

However tempting it might be, I don't think you will feel better after it. I nearly did the same a few years ago after someone SERIOUSLY peed me off. DH talked me out of it. I'm glad he did and person in question ended up getting done anyway through their own stupidity. What goes around comes around etc.

AccrualIntentions · 20/08/2017 12:56

HMRC do have means to investigate, however be prepared that they might not. Their resources are so stretched now that tax inspectors have to focus on the most egregious examples of tax evasion.

joojoobean99 · 20/08/2017 12:56

OP isn't BU at all. Everyone else pays their taxes and NI so why shouldn't someone making £1k a week? Report her, I would.

HotelEuphoria · 20/08/2017 12:56

As long as you are sure then you should report it. I really resent people scamming the rest of us simply because they can, and if that makes me a spiteful bitch so be it. Why should my tax pay her tax credits whilst she pays none?

But be careful, just because she puts on FB she earns a grand a week selling Forever Living doesn't mean she goes Grin.

lljkk · 20/08/2017 12:57

I'd report her.

mydogisthebest · 20/08/2017 12:57

Keeping quiet about so much money each week is obviously wrong. If it were a small amount, although still wrong, I would probably be inclined to say nothing.

The fact that not only is she hiding such a large amount but also having the cheek to claim tax credits would, for me, be reason to report her.

hooveringhamabeads · 20/08/2017 12:57

Grin it's not forever living....oddly enough.

ButtHoleinOne · 20/08/2017 12:59

Swerve no matter how much she grates on you. She will be found out somehow sooner or later.

How if someone doesn't report her? Confused

Op it doesn't matter what your motives are if you're sure about what she's doing. As you should do I think anyway!

reportPost · 20/08/2017 12:59

I also think this an unfeasible to make, in profit, in cash.

I'd report her and perhaps it would be sour grapes. Either because I dislike her or because I give the government a huge amount of money every month so why shouldn't she!

ButtHoleinOne · 20/08/2017 12:59

Should do it anyway!

TheFrendo · 20/08/2017 13:01

Report her. She is stealing from the rest of us.
