I don't know a lot about Iran, but have worked with a few Iranian nationals.
It's often mentioned how modern Iran was before the Revolution, but not everyone was happy. Politically and otherwise, as far as I understand it, it was seen as an imposition by foreign powers, and economically, they were being used.
It's similar to Venezuela (and other countries). Chavez was popular initially because he took back control of their oil reserves from foreign companies (i.e. US et al) and used the revenue to improve living conditions for the poorest.
Of course, and not very surprisingly, he also had dictatorial tendencies.
