To ask what your plane outfit is?

Flying to Dubai from Manchester in November.

So it's going to be freezing here, red hot on landing. Also going straight to a "posh" hotel from airport.

I'm getting rather anxious about this (I do have anxiety) and it's getting worse by the day! Ridiculous and first world problem, I know!)

What would you wear??

Pandora that's pretty much what most first class passengers do.

Hulababy · 17/08/2017 22:15

I go for comfort on a plane esp long haul. I've learnt long ago that no one else cares what your wearing on the average day and def not on a plane. Wear what you find is comfortable and warm/cool, layers of destination is a different temperature to where you're leaving.

Last flight I went from hot to cold coming home. I had a cotton t shirt type maxi dress and had a hoodie in my hand luggage for later. Used the plane blanket for when we tried to sleep.

Way out was cold to hot - wore layers. Harem pants, best too, t shirt, hoodie.

So many MNers are such stylish travellers!

In my head my plane outfit is - lightweight cardi, silk top, immaculate chinos and some pretty flats. With big stylish sunnies and a lovely leather handbag to carry my essentials.

In reality it's a shocking mismatched jumble of the shit I couldn't fit in my suitcase. Think walking boots with a maxi dress and a hoody. And a luminous hiking backpack, natch.

Humiliating.

Hulababy · 17/08/2017 22:18

I can't wear something like jeans on a plane. I don't find jeans comfortable at all and couldn't have anything tight or close fitting at all.

TeamCersei · 17/08/2017 22:19

I just wear nice skinny jeans

Surely skinny jeans are the worst things to wear on a flight?
They're so restricting.
You might as well roll out the Welcome mat for DVT.

Hulababy · 17/08/2017 22:19

You don't need to dress up to be upgraded. As a solo flyer my brother has been upgraded a few times - in his casuals or sweat pants. Being solo or occasional a couple, and being at the front of the queue at the right time is all that's needed.

TeamCersei · 17/08/2017 22:20

Loose jersey trousers with a stretchy waistband and a loose jersey top.

that's what you should be wearing.

Sausagerollers · 17/08/2017 22:21

Hotsquash Slouch & Glam trousers and a vest top with a sweater.

I travel a lot and always wear this. The trousers are temperature-regulating and don't crease (& are super comfy) and the vest acts as a thermal layer under the sweater in the cold country and a single layer in the warm.
I usually go with a slogan jumper to add a bit of character to the outfit, Hush have some nice ones at the moment.
Oh and trainers or converse.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 17/08/2017 22:22

On winter departures I wear a simple black jersey dress with woolen tights and take my burgundy cashmere shawl. On arrival I whip the tights off. Posh hotels or upgraded cabins do not require posh clothes btw

mmmmnuts · 17/08/2017 22:23

You might as well roll out the Welcome mat for DVT.

I dunno about that. Doctors tell you to wear compression tights to reduce the chances of DVT. I won't pretend to understand the science behind that.

OverTheHammer · 17/08/2017 22:31

Thanks for all the advice!

I'm claustrophobic and have IBS (so often have an uncomfortable stomach) and I get plane bloat 😂 I have experienced the horror taking off boots and not being able to get them back on again on landing!

So I'm liking the harem pants and vest idea - especially as I can dress them up or down!

WTF have skinny jeans got to do with DVT Confused

OverTheHammer · 17/08/2017 23:22

To be fair, skinny jeans would probably help to prevent a DVT

You'll be air conditioned to the point of hypothermia in Dubai!

Jedimum1 · 17/08/2017 23:33

Something very comfy for the plane, such as stretchy leggings, a t-shirt and a hoodie. If needed, I'd be wearing flat pumps or the butterfly shoes. No make up because it's a long flight and I'd be sleeping half of it. In my hand luggage, I'd have something for Dubai's airport, like a dress or a nice top that could go with leggings, heels if you want to. I'd also add one of those foldable "luggage bags" into my hand luggage. On arrival, I'd go to the bathroom, put the bulky winter clothes in the foldable bag (now unfolded, obviously), I'd put the dress / top and would put my make up on. I'd put this bag with the rest of the luggage in the taxi, to go straight to the room. You need to be comfy in the plane, it's a very long flight and you'll probably sleep on your clothes. You'll want to freshen up on arrival as well.

Puffpaw · 17/08/2017 23:35

Fellow ibs sufferer, for plane bloat take rennies after check in and on the plane.

blueshoes · 17/08/2017 23:40

A midi jersey dress with elasticated waist which covers my legs and is comfortable and not restrictive. Layer on a light cardigan or if a night flight, keep snug under the blanket. No way will I wear skinny jeans. Have just one ultra light weight waterproof all purpose down coat (Uniqlo is good) for the cold.

Tentomidnight · 18/08/2017 09:02

Black jersey harem trousers, tshirt and a cardigan. Nice flip flops or converse on my feet.
Big bag with sunglasses and a gig scaft to put on and off as appropriate.
Have a great trip!

Tentomidnight · 18/08/2017 09:03

gig scaft? No, a big scarf Grin

designonaut · 18/08/2017 11:36

I flew back from China via Dubai to Manchester a week or so ago. On the way we had a VERY hot trip in the bus from plane to airport lounge in Dubai which seemed to last for ages. I don't think the air conditioning was working. So layers are essential. And wear clothes you can sleep in. The hotel won't care what you look like. I wrote this blog post about it rattleskuttle.tumblr.com/ (Business trip to China - advice)

RedSandYellowSand · 18/08/2017 11:54

I wouldn't recommend a vest top for the middle east.
You will see people in them, but it's not the most respectful thing to wear. Recommend a tee shirt with a sleeve.
I wear trainers, jersey trousers and a long sleeved tee shirt (I go somewhere more conservative after Dubai). Dump the coat and jumpers in the suitcase once you are in the airport before check-in.

GrandDesespoir · 18/08/2017 12:14

I'd never wear jeans on a long-haul flight. Far too uncomfortable, even stretchy ones. Also a bra without underwiring, or vest top with secret support.

I'd probably go for leggings and a long top with something cooler underneath and, if leaving the UK in winter, a warm coat. Outfit could be smartened up with boots and a scarf, plus jewellery and a dab of lipstick on arrival.

NC4now · 18/08/2017 12:21

Good point about the vest top. I wore them in India but used my scarf as a shawl (and bought some beautiful new ones in the markets).

Is that a style that would work in Dubai or would something like a kimono top work better? We never left the airport as we were just transferring.

MyheartbelongstoG · 18/08/2017 12:22

Depending on where you go in UAE you will not be allowed to show bare shoulders.

KatharinaRosalie · 18/08/2017 12:36

Oh and I always wear flight socks, or alternatively comression sleeves. Make a massive difference to how much your legs swell up. Sleeves (this type, you get them from any sports shop www.amazon.co.uk/Compression-Sleeves-Graduated-Unisex-Medium/dp/B01IPT3P0E/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1503055703&sr=8-6&keywords=compression+sleeves)&tag=mumsnetforum-21 are easier to put on, and you can wear open shoes with them.
