Extremely scary moment when driver blocked my car on a country lane.

I was out driving on the Blackdown hills today with my 1 year old and 3 year old DD trying to find Wellington monument. I know its pretty easy to find being pretty large but I am a bit of an idiot with driving and thought i knew the way (being relatively local) and it turned out I didn't.

Anyway, I went into a country lane and did a U turn to correct myself as I didn't want to U turn on one of the larger roads and as I was coming out onto the more main road another car (a 4X4 with 2 men in it aged mid 50s) also was doing a u turn (or so i thought initially). The driver blocked my exit out of the junction (They could see me drive up to it) as I attempted to turn left and I assumed he was stopping to turn into my lane so I attempted to veer left and drive around him and he blocked me again. I did it again and he did it again.

I didn't want to stop and wind down my window it being the middle of the countryside and that I had 2 young children in the back but he trapped me. In the end i had to and he wound down his window and he said 'I was just going to ask you how to get to xx', I was upset and panicking by then and screamed at him 'How dare you block my path!! Get out of the way!'. My heart was racing and I called dh straight away and gave him a description of the car just in case and set off hime (I didn't go to Wellington monument in the end).

AIBU? I can kind of understand if there was an accident and they needed a first aider but surely i made it perfectly clear i didnt want to stop- I was shitting myself to be honest.

Wellthisisshit sums up this whole thread perfectly.

Bunch of fucking arseholes on this thread. OP YANBU not one tiny little bit.

Jux · 16/08/2017 19:59

Yay for WellThisIsShit. Perfect.Star

Drivingmenuts · 17/08/2017 11:47

YANBU.

Have you told the police?

Worth reporting to the non emergency line as there may be a pattern.

Gabilan · 17/08/2017 11:52

For people who can't be bothered to read a thread, try this: in your settings you can opt to highlight the OP's posts. Then you can just read through those to get an update on where things are at.

400+ posts over four days and it's reasonable to suppose that things may have moved on a bit.

Ollivander84 · 17/08/2017 12:01

I slowed down for a man in the middle of the road shouting for help and waving
He tried to get in my car but found my doors were locked and then punched my car, denting the A frame so badly he caused £900 of damage. I had to pay the excess and lost all my no claims as I was on a years free insurance and they don't protect your no claims. Never again

picklemepopcorn · 17/08/2017 14:04

Oh olivander that's infuriating!

Ollivander84 · 17/08/2017 14:08

I hadn't even done 3000 miles in it Sad

Aeroflotgirl · 17/08/2017 14:32

Oh god Oliver, that is scarey, cod have been worse if you had not locked your doors. That is exactly why op had every right to react how she did. Unfortunately now, I word not stop for anyone flagging me down, I would call the Police. You don't know. Sometimes women or kids are used as decoys.

Ollivander84 · 17/08/2017 14:35

Luckily he kept running after my car so I rang the police and drove just slowly enough he kept running after me. Police arrested him but I only got £100 back at £5 a month

Aeroflotgirl · 17/08/2017 17:20

Oh my goodness, that is awful Olivander Shock. People are saying op overreacted, noway!

Sparklyglitter · 18/08/2017 06:26

If I wanted directions I would have wound my window down and waved to get attention - I would NOT be moving my car stopping a lone woman being able to get out of the road! Of course you panicked! I would have reported them to the police these guys clearly need some common sense drummed into them!!! I'm not sure why some of you are being so rude? Here's a fellow human being wanting our support and you are being really critical about what sounds to me like quite a frightening situation!

Luckily he kept running after my car so I rang the police and drove just slowly enough he kept running after me

Bloody hell. That's amazing. Incredible presence of mind.

Ollivander84 · 18/08/2017 09:28

Datun - it was more absolute rage along the lines of "you are not bloody getting away with this" BlushGrin
I had to turn round at one point as I got to the end of the road to keep him following me. He jumped off the road when the police arrived but they kept me on the phone and got there in about 7 minutes. I said to the police he was still following me and I was going to keep him doing it until they arrived because I didn't want to lose sight of him

WindyWednesday · 18/08/2017 09:47

Read the thread!!!

yes the op called the police and there had been several reports of these men in the same area targeting women and doing this.

ShoesHaveSouls · 18/08/2017 11:26

Ollivander - what was his explanation when the police picked him up? I mean he tried to get into your car, which is bloody scary. But yes, incredible presence of mind on your part, and good job you had your doors locked.

Ollivander84 · 18/08/2017 11:59

I actually hit the lock button on the car door as I slowed because I realised he wasn't shouting for help and he was screaming. The road was too narrow to get around him and he was sort of veering from side to side
Drunk apparently, had an argument with his girlfriend and wanted to throw himself under a car
I did contemplate if the door had been open, he might have punched me so no insurance issues and a criminal injuries compensation payment Grin

Datun · 18/08/2017 12:17

With regards to the door locking aspect As far as I know, people are not recommended to drive around with all four door centrally locked.

Makes access difficult in an accident.

But knowing where the button is and hovering over it if you think something is wrong - that sounds like a good idea.

Ollivander84 · 18/08/2017 12:24

Yeah if I'm on the motorway etc, doors open. In town or slow driving late at night, doors locked

Italiangreyhound · 18/08/2017 12:26

Preach it sister WellThisIsShit - you are so right.

Italiangreyhound · 18/08/2017 12:30

Can anyone explain how to highlight only OP's messages? Thanks

Aeroflotgirl · 18/08/2017 12:33

I have heard of women and children being used as decoys, to lure people. Saw something from the Police that this had been happening recently, if you see a child or woman flagging your car down, don't stop, but call the Police. It is sad in this day and age you should have to do that, but this is the reality like Oliveander situation.

Go to the top of the thread, click the down arrow on the right hand side and go to customise.

If that doesn't work because you're on a phone, go to the very bottom of the page you are on and click desktop site to switch to the alternative view (you can click it back afterwards) and then try it from there instead.

Also, has Billy No-Bollocks not heard of sat nav? Hope you've reported this gutless wonder to the police.
