...to ask if you regret buying a Dyson?

I AM being unreasonable posting here for traffic but I'm half an hour away from buying a Dyson Animal and want to be sure it's worth the extra £100 on Henry!

We have a 3 bed house, a Labrador,10 year old and a baby so need something fairly reliable- last vacuum lasted just over 7 months as couldn't cope with the fucking ridiculous amount of dog hair

Tell me... are Dysons worth it?!

Absolutely hated dysons when the kids were little constantly broke hoovering up small toys changed to a Henry 10 years ago it's obvs not been a bit of bother

magoria · 13/08/2017 16:38

I got a dyson.

It loses suction. I have to constantly removed all DP's hair from getting tangled in it. The filters need cleaning. When you empty it you have to scrape all the crap from the inner bits out.

Biggest regret. I can't justify replacing it though as it still 'works' and cost a bomb.

anditwasalladream · 13/08/2017 16:39

Another one with a shark lift away. It's great. Powerful and lift away makes jobs like stairs a lot easier. You can also slide it under beds easily and the 'headlights' show all the dirt. Love mine.

tulippa · 13/08/2017 16:46

I HATE my Dyson. It's one of the cordless chargeable ones. Suction is great but the mechanisms can't cope with what it sucks up and I'm forever having to take it apart to fix it and emptying the barrel and detangling all the hair out of the brushes is revolting (this needs doing at least weekly). If I hadn't paid £300 for it I'd have got rid of it ages ago.

BananaSandwichesEveryDay · 13/08/2017 16:48

I've always found my Dyson reliable and effective. However, my new Shark is so much better, even than when Dyson was brand new. here

ittakes2 · 13/08/2017 16:49

I have both. Would never be without a Henry. Gave my animal to my mother'n'law, have a dyson Cordless which I love but not as powerful as Henry

ThouShallNotPass · 13/08/2017 16:54

We have a Dyson animal ball here and we love it. Picks up hairs just fine. The 5 year (or is it longer now with newer ones?) guarantee means you can just call them up and an engineer will pop out a day later and fix (and service) it for free. Or if it's a broken part they pop it in the post.

We have a Henry Vacuum at work and whilst it's great, it's not utterly fantastic on pet hairs. Also sometimes if you're not using it at the correct angle it's suction makes it really difficult to move. You just stop dead and almost trip over the pole 😂 or maybe that's just clumsy me

runningyogabooze · 13/08/2017 17:03

I have a Dyson hand held and a Dyson round fan and both are brilliant

peachgreen · 13/08/2017 17:08

My big Dyson is honestly about 20 years old and it's still marvellous. And our cordless one is so handy.

peachgreen · 13/08/2017 17:09

(Er, not that I've had it for 20 years - I bought it second hand so can't say how much it was used before I got it. But it's done me almost 10!)

SophieGiroux · 13/08/2017 17:14

Another vote for Miele cat and dog. Customer service excellent too.

rabbitcakes · 13/08/2017 17:16

I love my dyson a little too much for an appliance. It's amazing.

butterfly990 · 13/08/2017 17:28

This is a fabulous cordless vacuum. If you already have the right Makita charger and battery pack it is only £46 or £146 with them included.

The battery and charger fit other products like drills, radios etc.

crisscrosscranky · 13/08/2017 18:01

Thanks all, I bought the DC40 Animal and so far I love it- I'm almost willing to need to hoover again!

It is heavy but couldn't afford the cordless.

I am trying to convince DH we should get a Henry too- just for messy jobs so the Dyson stays clean Blush

I'm cleaner so have used many different vacuums, I don't like Henry or hettys although suction can be good, they are too bulky and the pole bits always eventually keep falling off.
Dysons are good for suction but I kind of hate the cordless ones, if you have animals it fills up in seconds and only really good for a quick job or doing stairs and holding onto the button hurts my hand and I lose grip strength in no time and don't have alot of battery life.
Mieles are ok too haven't tried many but not a terrible Hoover.

My favourite Hoover was a shark, lightweight could easily switch from hard floor to carpet and had lights on it so you could see the floor more clearly, when on carpets it basically moved itself and only needed guiding. It also switched into a corded hand held for the stairs, it was a dream. The particular shark I used did have a small tank which I think was the only downside of the whole thing but if there is a bigger version I would get one.

Katedotness1963 · 13/08/2017 18:37

I have had two Dysons, both were overpriced rubbish. The second one was the animal, hardly picked up any animal hair. One day I lost my temper and we bought a cheap vacuum, what a difference! The carpet was shades brighter after one use. I'll never waste money on any Dyson products again.

eggsandwich · 13/08/2017 18:47

I've had three dysons and each one went wrong after a year, I got so fed up of paying so much for something that didn't last in the end I brought a Henry Hoover and I love it I can see why a lot of industries use them in their offices.

GreyHare · 13/08/2017 18:48

I hated my big Dyson, but love my little V8 cordless for a quick whip round but it's not a patch on my Miele Cat and Dog, the bags last for ever and the adjustable suction is amazing so I can hoover lampshades and curtains with absolute ease.

YoungGirlGrowingOld · 13/08/2017 18:53

We have a Henry for dirty jobs and a Sebo for the house (which contains a Persian cat). I have had 2 Dysons in the past. The first was okay, the second was hopeless - my DH reckons they got worse when production moved to China. But my Sebo is loads better than both of them put together! (I promise I don't work for them... Grin )

Coldilox · 13/08/2017 18:57

Love love love my cordless Dyson. And my Dyson hair dryer!

lazyarse123 · 13/08/2017 18:58

Had 2 hated them both, i snapped one of the tools doing the stairs (I'm not particularly enthusiastic)) overpriced tat. I now have a Panasonic which I love. We don't have pets though. Used to use a henry at work, good suction but lethal on the backs of legs.

I love my dysons to bits. Every time I use them I love them. They are amazing. The big one is a cordless one. I can't remember the model but it was quite expensive but I waited and waited and waited and eventually got a great deal. (Price matched by John Lewis). The small one is a handheld one. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

It's a bit annoying that the different attachments don't work with both hoovers though.

EveryDayANewName · 13/08/2017 19:00

I also have a dyson hairdryer that's AMAZING.

Florence16 · 13/08/2017 19:01

I hugely regret my Dyson Animal. It constantly gets hair clogged and stops spinning. Have to take the end completely apart to fix it. Dyson say it's normal Confused it's useless. Never again!
