AIBU to be excited it's nearly Autumn

Hello all, new to Mumsnet and not sure if this post is in the appropriate place? Sorry if not...

Anyway, was having a discussion with the ladies at work about how the tree leaves are already starting to change colour. The nights are slowly drawing back in and it feels cooler (although it seems to have warmed up again today).

This got me feeling excited as I absolutely love autumn and the '...ber' months!

Apart from one colleague who feels the same, the others think I'm strange for loving Autumn!

Anyone else? :D

So I'm hearing Halloween isn't a huge thing in England but what about Scotland and Ireland, the original birthplace?? I'd imagine a Halloween in ireland to be amazing!
I have Australian friends and they just don't "get" the whole Halloween thing, guess it's not celebrated at all there.

Paddington68 · 13/08/2017 14:41

Hate Halloween

Cailleach666 · 13/08/2017 14:51

Halloween here in rural Scotland is amazing. Our village is buzzing, the streets buzzing with little witches and vampires ( and big ones too). It's always been big here- in the 1960s we used hollowed out turnips as no pumpkins ( anyone who has smelled burning turnip will never forget ) My grandmother who was born in 1890s used to celebrate Halloween too- she would tell me tales of dressing up as a witch and being spooked to within an inch of her life on Halloween night when she came across a coven of witches in a graveyard near her home.

What are they Cailleach? What is in the jars?

MissingPanda · 13/08/2017 16:18

@Cailleach666 I like them. What are they?

I look forward to Autumn because my birthday is at the end of September and I enjoy celebrating it Grin Yes, I know that's anathema to some mn'rs Wink I used to love walking the dog in either gilet/jumper or coat with wellies, smelling the smells, seeing the changing colours. I love putting my pjs on and settling in on a dark evening when I'm at home. I look forward to knowing what to wear e.g. jeans, jumpers because I know it'll be cold whereas, this 'summer' at least, there have been days when it has been cold enough to at least need a long sleeved t-shirt, as opposed to the vest top I've taken to work with me the day before (support worker, does sleeps). When we do get a proper summer the heat is usually accompanied by humidity which makes it both hot and sticky and there's only so much you can take off before people start complaining. I do enjoy the heat when I go on holiday though, maybe because I can spend most of the day sunbathing in a bikini. With Autumn you can usually achieve the right amount of warmth to not be too hot or cold. It's not a case of not liking heat but not liking it too hot.

Having said that I like summer, I like all the seasons and enjoy them while they're here but, after a while, I'm fed up with them and look forward to the changes that signal the next season. I don't think I could live where it was hot/cold all year around.

Cailleach666 · 13/08/2017 16:30

Panda they are magical talismen, containing herbs, shells, feathers, spices. To support and help, like lucky heather.

MaximumChocolateNeeded · 13/08/2017 16:44

Nope! Autumn is the best.

Nothing to do with my birthday in October...

MissingPanda · 13/08/2017 17:33

@Cailleach666 your village sounds like a real community that comes together for Halloween, or Samhein seeing as you mentioned Paganism. I admit I haven't celebrated Halloween since the DC were little and lost interest. Even the kids stopped coming for sweets after a couple of years, although I only realised why when I came on mn and found out there's a rule that people only go to houses which have a pumpkin.

Can I be cheeky and ask for a link to your website?

dementedma · 13/08/2017 17:34

Can you pm me your busines cailleach. I like your stuff.

NoMudNoLotus11 · 13/08/2017 17:35

I dunno, I love autumn but days like today where the sun is warm and pleasant on my skin and face whilst sitting outside enjoying a g&t, I know I will miss waiting months to enjoy the feeling again.

Autumn is great but also dark, a chill in the air and makes me worry about heating bills. Getting up for work in the cold is hell also!

Dustbunny1900 · 13/08/2017 20:38

Another reason I'm dying to visit Scotland then!
I'm Shock at people who hate Halloween. I mean to each their own but it's a season/holiday of the soul for me , don't think I could live without it. your village sounds incredible calli , I wish I was more part of a community here the way it sounds your village is especially with things to do on holidays.

ItsNachoCheese · 13/08/2017 20:40

cailleach do you have a fb page your stuff looks amazing

dementedma · 13/08/2017 20:41

I'm in Scotland too and round here its no big deal, other than young teens chucking eggs at
windows and kids begging for sweets. I'm always glad when its over

ItsNachoCheese · 13/08/2017 20:44

Scotland here too and i had no trick or treaters last year secretly chuffed as i had nothing in...

LoniceraJaponica · 13/08/2017 20:45

"I'm Shock at people who hate Halloween."

I don't hate it. I have outgrown it. When DD was little we had a couple of Halloween parties followed by trick or treating, but she is 17 now and too old for that. Although she did have a Halloween sleepover last year with 3 other friends.

Delatron · 13/08/2017 20:53

I hate it! I'm sure all your parties and celebrations are lovely but here it's just trudging around for sweets. One night at the end of October. I don't know any adult who really likes it. But agree it must depend on which country/ part of the country you come from.

gelnames · 13/08/2017 21:43

For those who love Autumn/Winter like myself, I get the jitters when I hear this....

"When Winter's here, can Spring be far behind"

Spring does nothing for me, it is the harbinger of Summer. Yikes!

Summer is so long, so hot, so full of people everywhere, so I must be in need of help of some sort!

I know it sounds bad, but life is just so easy when the sprogs are ensconced in their schools, No young kids here anymore in this house, but been there, worn the t shirt as many others have too.

Time for me now. And that is definitely outside the school hols.

Sorrrrryyyy.

LoniceraJaponica · 13/08/2017 22:02

Where do you live where you get long hot summers gelnames? Because we certainly don't get them in South Yorkshire.

Today has been a pleasant and sunny 19 degrees, but I would class that as warm rather than hot.

toffee1000 · 13/08/2017 22:08

Echoing above. Long hot summers simply do not happen in Britain.

Delatron · 13/08/2017 22:17

Summers are long and hot? Not in this country..

Oliversmumsarmy · 14/08/2017 00:29

Where are these long hot summers and can you send some this way.

The only way I am going to get a long hot summer is to have the heating going full blast

Roussette · 14/08/2017 07:49

How can people love Halloween if their DCs are older? We had a short few years when we had one day of hollowing out a pumpkin and answering the door with a basket of sweets but it was never a big thing where I live and now as our DCs are older, there is nothing to it, I barely know when it is!

Long hot summers have happened (rarely admittedly) but when we have longer than about 4 days of sun you get loads of people moaning about it.
