To rehome the elderly cat?

Lazyginger · 09/08/2017 23:10

The elderly cat (15) keeps pissing in the house. The house stinks.
I have tried everything! I've taken it to the vets (several times) for expensive tests - apparently there's nothing wrong.
I've thrown out countless carpet and door mat.
I've tried everything Google suggests. Tin foil. Orange peel. Aversion therapy.
Locking her out works whilst she's out! But as soon as I let her in again she pisses somewhere! Soon it will be winter again and I didnt really want to lock her out.
Thing is, apart from making the house stink, I've got a 4 month old ds who will soon be crawling and the last thing I want is for him to find a lake of cat piss.
I'm at the end of the road and considering taking her back to the cats protection as awful as it makes me feel. Is this unreasonable? Im at my wits end!

Poor things (the cat, not the op)

Op, whatever you do, please do not EVER get another pet. You don't deserve them. In a perfect world, animals would only live with people that would truly love and care for them. Sad

Some of my best friends have been cats. I would give anything for another day with some of them.

winobaglady · 10/08/2017 22:19

Apols not RTFT, but have you tried Pet Remedy?
I always recommend it, and use it for stressed cats.
I sell it on behalf of the charity I volunteer at, but you can buy it online cheaply enough.

Good luck

Do bore off. You are a judgemental and mean person. In a perfect world, you wouldn't be here being so horrible.

BubblesBubblesBubbles · 10/08/2017 22:22

And my old boy did something similar (before he was pts) when my dc2 was born. He was fine with dc1 but number 2 stressed him out.

He was given antibiotics for a uti, I had plug ins in all the rooms he used. He was also given some cat happy pills. All the cats were given a space away from the children a place they could rest/sleep away from the hustle. Also every area where he had been was cleaned with a solution which broke down the Enzymes to discourage repeat areas. Also more litter trays were put out. Puppy training pads under the trays.

Op white vinegar and bicarbonate help with the smell. Doesn't break down the Enzymes but helps.

Terfing - what Notever said Angry

Terfing · 10/08/2017 22:24

@notevernotnevernotnohow

I'm horrible for trying to prevent future animal neglect? Shock

Fine, I'm happy being horrible.

BertrandRussell · 10/08/2017 22:25

"Some of my best friends have been cats. I would give anything for another day with some of them."
The sort of "animal lover" ( please note inverted commas) who keeps them alive longer than they should for their own selfish reasons. Certainly not in the best interests of the animal.

BubblesBubblesBubbles · 10/08/2017 22:26

So the op has sought a second opinion at the vets?

IrritatedUser1960 · 10/08/2017 22:26

My elderly cat is incontinent but happy. I have her in a part of the house with hard floors and when the time comes to go it will be in her own home surrounded by people she loves not miserable in a shelter.

Terfing · 10/08/2017 22:26

@BertrandRussell

I wouldn't keep an animal alive if it was in pain, of course! I just meant that I would love one more day with them before it was too late, if that makes sense.

BubblesBubblesBubbles · 10/08/2017 22:28

Had the cat re tested for a uti? Tried every possible solution?

notevernotnevernotnohow · 10/08/2017 22:29

So the op has sought a second opinion at the vets?

More than second, several. Right there in the OP. Was that your apology?

notevernotnevernotnohow · 10/08/2017 22:29

I'm horrible for trying to prevent future animal neglect? shock

Nice try, but that's not it. You're just horrible. As well as wrong.

kali110 · 10/08/2017 22:30

The op loves her cat, and doesn't want yo get rid of it.
Shes said it in desperation.

notevernotnevernotnohow · 10/08/2017 22:30

Had the cat re tested for a uti? Tried every possible solution?

Yes, also in the OP. Do you need any more help understanding it?

sonjadog · 10/08/2017 22:30

What a nasty, judgemental thing to say, Terfing. Personally, I think people who keep sick animals alive because they are too selfish to put the animal's welfare in front of their own feelings are poorer pet owners.

Terfing · 10/08/2017 22:34

As I said, I would never keep a suffering animal alive! As far as I've read, the op's cat is not suffering or in pain? If she was, I would be the first to suggest having her PTS.

My point was that cats, and other pets, are not disposable. They are family members and should be treated as such. People who don't do this, shouldn't have pets.

SweetieDarling11 · 10/08/2017 22:35

It's quite clear what Terfing meant - i.e. She'd love another day with her (happy, healthy) past cats. Not any (old, suffering) cat just for her own satisfaction. Quite clear. Stop being childish, folks.

notevernotnevernotnohow · 10/08/2017 22:35

Do you want to apologise to the OP Terfing for your first comments?

BubblesBubblesBubbles · 10/08/2017 22:37

notevernotnevernotnohow

Yes I'm obviously hard of reading and understanding Hmm but then maybe I am a responsible pet owner and would try every possible solution first.

This is not my pet I can only go on what I would do but then I hold my pets in higher esteem than most people and care for them how I deem appropriate.

Maybe the poor old cat needs to be pts I don't know it's not mine.

notevernotnevernotnohow · 10/08/2017 22:39

but then maybe I am a responsible pet owner and would try every possible solution first

like the OP, then?

So, you misread, you misunderstood, and you were rude and judgemental based on your misunderstandings.

Your backpeddaling is not quite a sorry, but ok.

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 10/08/2017 22:41

The cat is coming inside to piss all over the house. The op has taken it to the vet and tried lots of things. Any sane person would be at the end of their tether with an animal who kept pissing everywhere, especially with a new baby.

It's a shame you "animal lovers" dont show the same compassion to someone at the end of her tether, than you would to the pissing cat!

missymayhemsmum · 10/08/2017 22:46

I had an elderly cat who did this, the worst was when she pissed inside the airing cupboard and it came through the kitchen ceiling. Up until then she had been a garden-peeing, catflap using cat. She had recurrent UTI's and kidney infections (which didn't always show up on tests) and could no longer make it over the fence to her favourite flowerbed. She also had an objection to using litter trays where the other cat could see. A litter tray in a private box, long lasting antibiotic injections and a white vinegar spray everywhere she had made smells did the trick.

Mittens1969 · 10/08/2017 22:46

I think she has tried hard actually. Her first post was a bit odd, she referred to the cat as 'it' and seemed like she didn't care, I thought so too.

It is difficult to cope with a baby as well as a cat that's peeing everywhere, we should cut her a bit of slack, I think. She has since said that she will keep the cat now, so it's a good idea to encourage her in that, don't you think? Hopefully she will.

To be fair, she herself didn't talk about having the cat PTS, she talked about rehoming her because she couldn't cope with her peeing on the carpets all the time, as her baby is now crawling. She's listened and has accepted that won't work.

BubblesBubblesBubbles · 10/08/2017 22:46

notevernotnevernotnohow

You are a bit dense And rather rude i asked had the op taken the cat to the vet since just because there wasn't an infection the first time it was tested doesn't mean it's not now, and in all honesty I don't care it's not my bloody cat. Fuck a duck I'm too tired to deal with over emotional people about a pet which isn't even mine.

Op rehome your cat or don't up to you. Do what you think you need to, obviously an old cat which pisses on your floor isn't what you signed up for when you got that cute kitten.

I will not apologise for having an opinion that the op may have not done everything before considering rehoming. If that is the only somi
