To be fair it's not really appropriate for one leader to comment on domestic events in another country, so I'm not surprised May has been silent regarding yesterday's events.

OuaisMaisBon · 13/08/2017 14:33

Cave - you're right, but OTOH, we are now used to the "new normal" - which is Trump tweeting through his arse about anything and everything, including domestic events in the UK..

ElenaGreco123 · 13/08/2017 14:35

True CaveMum. The German Government refused to comment on our GE in June "out of politeness".

AcrossthePond55 · 13/08/2017 14:39

It's 6.30 here and I just got up. I just feel so downhearted.

Where is the righteous indignation and condemnation of Scrotus from the members of the GOP that I felt had a modicum of morals? Are they out polling their constituents before making a stand against this would-be dictator so they don't hurt their reelection chances?

Sure, it's easy to condemn the result because everyone abhors violence, but where is the condemnation for the actual cause of the violence? You don't kill a weed by cutting off the leaves, you kill it by pulling up the roots. And the roots of the current violence is probably teeing off on a round of golf as we speak.

PerkingFaintly · 13/08/2017 14:44

But leaders comment on domestic events in other countries all the time - in the guise of commiserations for the victims and solidarity with the country against the attackers.

And I realised as I typed that, that implicit in such commiserations and support are the assumptions that the attackers are "other" and that the country (particularly the government to whom the support is addressed) will be against the attackers.

If there's some doubt as to whether the government is against the attackers... Whether the attackers are "other" in the minds of the majority of the citizens... Yeah, that gets tricky.

BiglyBadgers · 13/08/2017 15:12

Which tells us something about our government's current relationship with Trump and views on white supremacists. If an Islamic terrorist had plowed into a crowd killing someone in America I have no doubt at all a brief statement of commiseration would have been released by the UK gov. After all we had statements of solidarity from all over after London bridge. It is pure hypocrisy, plain and simple.

Frankiestein401 · 13/08/2017 15:34

re the general silence from our (uk) "leadership" whilst I might have hoped for a response along the Chinese lines - I guess I have to hope that diplomatic messages are being sent. ( silence is not appropriate, given the early glad handing, that could be interpreted as 'I will be with you all the way')

unfortunately I suspect they're spending far too much time navel gazing whilst the hell in a handbag is progressing.

lionheart · 13/08/2017 15:37

I have not got any of those little twitter badges. Sad!

But I am glad to see the people who usually lurk, or pop up from time to time coming on here today. Smile

Powerful picture on Twitter with this caption:

"Who took this photo? Should be nominated for a Pulitzer. A black police officer protecting a group of men who wish him harm. Incredible."

Sorry, I should have credited that Tweet to @yashar

Ask, Ivanka is trying to calm the storm - too little too late and essentially meaningless from an UNELECTED official:

1:2 There should be no place in society for racism, white supremacy and neo-nazis.

2:2 We must all come together as Americans -- and be one country UNITED. #Charlottesville

Any tweets from Donald today? He seems unusually silent

TheNorthWestPawsage · 13/08/2017 16:28

Why does something tell me 'these words are not the words we're looking for.' (Apologies to Star Wars)

100% not from Trump's revolting little mouth.

Nothing at all from Trump since he woke up.
That's unusual.

When I asked senior WH official why Trump didn't condemn Cville Nazis, he said: "What about the leftist mob. Just as violent if not more so"

woman12345 · 13/08/2017 17:19

3rd person acknowledgement just out.
The White House has said Donald Trump condemns neo-Nazis and the KKK, after the President received backlash for his response to bloody protests in Charlottesville, Virginia.

“The President said very strongly in his statement yesterday that he condemns all forms of violence, bigotry and hatred and of course that includes white Supremacists, KKK, neo-nazi and all extremist groups," the White House said. "He called for national unity and bringing all Americans together.”

Even The Mooch on his first post-apocalyptic interview calls it terrorism.
And blames it on Bannon...

badbadhusky · 13/08/2017 17:28

Which show was the Mooch on? Is there a YouTube clip up yet?

HowDoYouFeelNow · 13/08/2017 17:35

badbadhusky here

I've not had chance to watch it yet, but it was on ABC's This Week, according to the description.

badbadhusky · 13/08/2017 17:37

Thanks howdo

Any tweets from Donald today? He seems unusually silent

I assumed his phone had been wrestled out of his hands from the tweet where he used the word "egregious". I am pretty sure he wouldn't even know how to pronounce it. Plus that tweet was so unlike his standard ranting it was clearly written by someone else trying to stay as firmly on the white picket fence as possible. I don't think they are letting him anywhere near the subject if they can help it.

Of course it won't last. You can only hold back the batshit crazy for so long.

PricklyBall · 13/08/2017 17:41

Yes, I presumed the "egregious" tweet was written by someone else. If someone read it out to him, Trump would probably assume "Egregious" was yet another player in the ongoing Russian investigation.

Lweji · 13/08/2017 17:44

I only watched the first couple of minutes. DS complained about me hogging the internet while he plays PS4. Sad
