to not want dd to have these school shoes?

as she will have to walk about 35 minutes each way to school.

Also school doesn't allow "soft sole ballet style pumps" so not sure if she would be allowed them anyway. I'd prefer her to have laced shoes like she had last year.

What sort of shoes do 11/12 year old girls wear to school?

DD is a similar age and she's got DMs for this September from last year (brought in April ish and still fit) and they look fab still. Highly recommend them, expensive but dc Martins do last

DeadDoorpost · 05/08/2017 22:23

Those shoes will create problems for her feet walking that far everyday, trust me. I used to walk an hour round trip to school in shoes with slightly thicker soles and they caused problems (major splints in my shins for years and stretched tendons/muscles in my feet). I agree with pp who suggested wearing trainers or something sturdier to school and changing into others once there.

And regarding whether she'd be allowed to wear them... depends on how strict the school are on their uniform policies. My old one had a hissy fit last year when a girl wore totally black shoes but had a tiny (black) label/logo on them. Went nuts and suspended her. Refused to let her cut the logo off to make them comply. It's getting ridiculous.

Juicyfruitloop · 05/08/2017 22:23

Skechers.

The school I worked at banned the ballet type shoe that your dd wants when a girl tripped because of the shoe while running round in the playground. She scraped her face quite badly. The girls all now wear either lace ups or shoes with a band across (I think they're called Mary janes?) That was a junior school though. I would try and talk her into lace ups personally. Safer and more comfortable for walking/running. Couldn't she have some ballet type shoes for going out? That's when I wear mine!

Tralalalalz · 05/08/2017 22:37

The girls here all wear Kickers, those slip one would be unheard of

HighwayDragon1 · 05/08/2017 22:41

Teacher here - teenage girls wear brogues, kickers or the shoe style DMs (absolutely no boots under any circumstances)

CorbynsBumFlannel · 05/08/2017 22:44

Soft sole ballet shoes are those ones that ruffle up when your feet aren't in them and the soles literally bend. The ones the op has posted don't have a soft sole.

threedayrule · 05/08/2017 22:58

Kickers and Docs are popular here. Either lace up or t-bars. Our school won't allow slip on shoes.

ShelaghTurner · 05/08/2017 23:18

Blondielongie I’m sure I still have at least one pair of Pods in the cupboard downstairs. I was older than school age but I bloody loved them! Grin

ShelaghTurner · 05/08/2017 23:21

And on that note I’ve found these for my 9yo. And she won’t even know that she’s living my yesterdays for me Grin

LinoleumBlownapart · 05/08/2017 23:27

My DD can wear any shoes with her uniform as long as they closed toes. She has a pair similar to those but she doesn't wear them on sport days. She cycles and it's a small rural school so the teachers move around the classes unless it's science or art, so shoes rarely get much wear.

But nothing beats kickers and DM shoes (although I think they are ugly compared to the boots).

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 06/08/2017 00:36

I have a similar pair of footwear and walk similar distances each day

Me too. MN seems to have a horror of pumps - goodness knows how often I've been told on here they are not suitable for walking. In bad weather I wear boots or wellies and change when I get to work.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 06/08/2017 00:38

But nothing beats kickers and DM shoes

The most cripplingly painful and unwearable footwear I have had the misfortune to waste a large amount of money on were DMs. Awful, truly awful.

PoppyPopcorn · 06/08/2017 09:57

I love my DM boots, very well made in my option. They do take a bit of wearing in though and if you've wide feet not all styles may be comfortable.

dementedma · 06/08/2017 13:24

Just back from Sports Direct who have great bargains on school shoes. DS is allowed to wear trainer type ones as long as they are black and not too flashy so got a pair reduced from £40 to 12.99! They are mens size 11Shock

Would she wear something like [[https://www.startriteshoes.com/brands/angry-angels/isabelle-black-leather-girls-riptape-school-shoes this]] from startrite? Not quite a ballet flat but not clumpy brogues. The sole looks quite sturdy (for they style of shoe anyway) but still has proper support and a strap to stop her doing the claw toe thing to keep them on.

IrritatedUser1960 · 06/08/2017 14:21

YANBU as a podiatrist I'd like to throw all shoes of that ilk on a massive bonfirs and dance aroudn it.
Not only are they incredibly ugly and make even skinny people look fat and awkward they offer no support whatsoever and your DD will end up with hammer toes, corns and dysfunctional feet eventually that will look horrible.
I ask my young patients why they all have them and they say, cos my friends wear them and I say so you want ugly feet then like all of your friends?
Did I say I flipping hate them.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 06/08/2017 14:31

What shoes are you talking about? If you mean the ones in the original post or these

Or

Pretty much what I wore for school. I do h not have any of the issues you list. "Ugly" is in the eye of the beholder.

whyareusernamessodifficult · 06/08/2017 14:46

I had a similar pair in S2 which I thought were great until I was walking home in the pouring rain and a twig ripped the sole of one of them off half way home.

I had a pair of DMs the year after that and either those or brogues seem to be what my teenage sister and her friends are all wearing to school now.

halcyondays · 06/08/2017 15:15

thanks, didn't expect so many replies. Do you think these are ok?

www.clarks.co.uk/c/Preppy-Edge-BL/p/26126603

She definitely wouldn't be allowed boots or dms or anything like that. It has to be flat black leather shoes.

Last year she had these which were goodwww.clarks.co.uk/c/Selsey-Cool-BL/p/26118895

Dd goes to a comp just outside Greater London. I've looked at what they wear as dd doesn't take much interest. What I've seen is that in year 7 a handful still wear Clarks Mary Janes but not many, a few wear Clarks ballet flats, some wear brogues. last year lace up Kickers were very fashionable, but this year many of the older fashionable girls wear patent tassel loafers. Not the ones you've posted but probably from places like Schuh. That's just dds school though and it does vary. They aren't allowed trainers or converse etc

Alexandrite · 06/08/2017 16:32

PS. Dd wears Selsey cool as do many of her friends. I've offered her kickers and loafers but she doesn't want them.

oldbirdy · 06/08/2017 16:40

I bought my DD a pair from M and S school shop last year; hands down best school shoes I ever bought. They are looking almost brand new after a full year of wear. Always done Clark's before now but these have lasted considerably better. My dd's style was a bit young for a 12 year old though but they do a nice brogue

ireallydontlikefootball · 06/08/2017 17:10

My dd is 15 and she wears those to walk to and from school every day (also a 35 minute journey each way) I think though that I might get her black trainers she can keep in her locker whilst at school and she can wear them too and from school instead as she had issues with blisters last year.

MrGrumpy01 · 06/08/2017 17:11

I got these from Start-Rite

www.startriteshoes.com/runway-black-leather-girls-lace-up-angry-angels?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIp-q4_v3C1QIVBYGzCh1xCgzMEAQYBiABEgL_j_D_BwE

She tried on a clarks slip on, (preppy edge possibly) but she really can't walk in them. She also tried the Selsey but preferred the start rite once on and felt them more comfortable. The preppy were nice and came quite high up at the front, she just can't walk in them at all.

They should pass the school rules. She did say most people wear brogues. It is annoying as her last pair are only a few months old but she apparently can't have velcro shoes and I don't want to cause her issues when she is just starting.
