as she will have to walk about 35 minutes each way to school.

Also school doesn't allow "soft sole ballet style pumps" so not sure if she would be allowed them anyway. I'd prefer her to have laced shoes like she had last year.

What sort of shoes do 11/12 year old girls wear to school?

Ive seen the yr6 kids wearing shoes like that. They don't last. Will you be buying boots for the winter? What about something like this. Still a slip on.

My 12YO wears the Clarks ballet flat style (not the one with the know but very similar) and has found them really good this year (they lasted until she outgrew them which is a rarity for her) but has opted for something with a bit more coverage for next year.

Twistmeandturnme · 05/08/2017 16:39

knot, not know

maddiemookins16mum · 05/08/2017 16:40

Those are nice Poppy. Those first Clarks ones have an old lady vibe.

CommonSenseIsNotAllThatCommon · 05/08/2017 16:43

Dd wears kickers. Most of her class wear kickers or brogues.

PoppyPopcorn · 05/08/2017 16:43

I think it also depends on your personal situation - if your child is taken to school by car and picked up every day, the flattie ones might be fine as they are inside 90% of the time. Children who have to walk (and who have wicked parents like me who always make them walk, even in the rain) need more sturdy shoes. Nothing worse than trudging home in the snow with soaking, cold feet.

Yes trainers are very practical but they are not allowed by many schools as they are not classed as "smart" which is fair enough.

PoppyPopcorn · 05/08/2017 16:44

10% off at Start Rite through Quidco too.

tireddotcom72 · 05/08/2017 16:46

Dd had lace up brogues in year 6 kickers year 7 and 8 and wants kickers again for year 9

1MillionSelfiesTakenByMyKids · 05/08/2017 16:48

Clarks do Goretex boots that are smart enough for school but also tough and waterproof. Would school allow boots?

yikesanotherbooboo · 05/08/2017 16:58

YANBU
Those very flat shoes are really unsuitable if DD walking any sort of distance to school.
She is still your responsibility as is her health and well being so choose more suitable shoes for her.
My DD is 10 years older now but I was in the same came as you and just accepted the eye rolling over school shoes.
I'm far from a strict parent but this was a subject over which I wouldn't budge. Actually school shoes for boys and girls is an absolute bugbear of mine.
Once her feet stopped growing she was allowed a pair of home shoes i.e. Boots or prettier shoes.

Bunnyjo · 05/08/2017 17:00

I hate baller style pumps; no grip, precious little soles and as much use as a chocolate fire guard during our winter. I went to Schuh, yesterday, for my DC. My DD is going into year 6 and she got this great pair of DM's.

Don't suppose that she has a locker at school does she so that she could have something sturdier to walk in & change into those?

They do look flimsy for an hr+ walk each day.

The thin sole would leave me with aching feet.

Iseesheep · 05/08/2017 19:09

Clarks are crap. My daughter has had 2 pairs in 3 months and when I took the first pair back they asked what she was using them for. I said school. Their response was that they're not suitable for wearing everyday. Apparently they're ok for every day if they're used in a 'work environment'. She's 17 and spends all day on her arse in a library, what's the difference?!

Clarks are getting not one pound more of my hard earned.

Genghi · 05/08/2017 21:44

@Iseesheep - are you sure your daughter isn't ruining them on purpose because she wants prettier shoes? 2 pairs in 3 months at 17 is ridiculous but would make me suspicious.

Pinkjellybeans · 05/08/2017 21:45

I'm 22 years old - and wore clarks ballet style shoes very much like these when I was in school. So did my younger sisters. We personally never had any issues with them (school was a mile away from us and took us half an hour to get to) although I now use the Clarks brogues and find then really confortable.

Ameliablue · 05/08/2017 21:55

I've got similar for my daughter, mainly because I bought expensive brogues last year and they were still done by October. I figured I may as well get the cheaper ones now then a decent pair of boots for winter.

mumontherun14 · 05/08/2017 21:58

Having similar battles here. We have compromised on a pair of low boots plus the ballet pump style. I like the brogues but she is not keen. Plus the school make them change into indoor shoes as soon as they get in and she gets a lift to school so her shoes usually last quite well x

CorbynsBumFlannel · 05/08/2017 22:01

I think they'll be fine. My 10 yr old has similar Clarks slip ons and walks 30 mins each day to school and they last her until she grows out of them which has been more than one school year before now because her feet grow slowly. The only issue we have had was when her and her friends used to like to high kick them off at break times. But I'm assuming that wouldn't be an issue at high school!

dementedpixie · 05/08/2017 22:04

www.schuh.co.uk/womens/schuh-house-party-black-flat-shoes/1339137020/ got these for dd today. 10% off with her young Scot card too

NewRug · 05/08/2017 22:08

What about these for school and some cheap trainers/walking boots for the commute?

For winter you can get some really stylish ankle length wellies

SarahS2404 · 05/08/2017 22:12

Get some trainers for walking to school then change them to those when she gets there. Otherwise those shoes won't last 2 minutes

Blondielongie · 05/08/2017 22:14

I've got a feeling my post will kill this thread. But why don't they make school shoes like in the 90s/00s? Leather, raised above the ground (so puddles/rain was not a problem) covered the whole foot giving support.

like this? Think these were the ones I had

Juicyfruitloop · 05/08/2017 22:19

Sketches have a range of school shoes, stylish and very durable.
