as she will have to walk about 35 minutes each way to school.

Also school doesn't allow "soft sole ballet style pumps" so not sure if she would be allowed them anyway. I'd prefer her to have laced shoes like she had last year.

What sort of shoes do 11/12 year old girls wear to school?

I wouldn't have thought they would be great with that distance to walk. Also her feet will get so cold and wet if it rained so YANBU. My daughter wore Lace up brogue type shoes at that age but only because I was a mean mum who took ages to give in...she now wears black, leather Converse. I personally think they're very sensible, but schools don't see them as suitable footwear. When they're being strict again in September I'm preparing to have to buy another pair until it settles down....

Floggingmolly · 05/08/2017 16:04

No, not at all. I know they're labelled school shoes, but they're not really, are they? Just the fact that they're black...

BeyondThePage · 05/08/2017 16:04

black brogues here (99% of the class wear them) - but had a year or so of wanting those - DD16 had that exact type when she was 12 - they were ok to be honest, but didn't last as long as the brogues.

We compromised - she had the ballets and the brogues and wore whichever was better for the weather conditions - the ballets were also worn outside of school.

I have similar for work. I do lots of walking and they last about 4 months

Tissunnyupnorth · 05/08/2017 16:11

DD wears black lace up kickers. V good for Winter. Not allowed the black leather converse, school says they are too much like trainers.

Genghi · 05/08/2017 16:11

Low ankle boots are good if she can wear them to school?!

Queenofthestress · 05/08/2017 16:12

They'll last about 3 weeks, mine did at that age!

RedSkyAtNight · 05/08/2017 16:13

I have a similar pair of footwear and walk similar distances each day. IME if it rains your feet get wet anywhere, so shoes that are comfortable are the most important thing.

That said, DD (11) has brogues (and if the school won't allow that style, that sounds like the deciding vote).

DelphiniumBlue · 05/08/2017 16:13

School doesn't allow "soft sole ballet style pumps".

So that would be a "no" then.

Idontmeanto · 05/08/2017 16:15

I found I was returning all Clarks shoes once the kids started walking to secondary. They all fell apart, even the robust looking styles. Dms once their feet finished growing were a godsend!

OublietteBravo · 05/08/2017 16:15

Black leather laced shows. Nothing else is allowed. We get through two pairs per year (well DD does).

Dixiestamp · 05/08/2017 16:20

Lots of girls of that age wear shoes like that to school, although - as others have said too- they're not great for walking in, especially in the rain.

PoppyPopcorn · 05/08/2017 16:21

Started a thread about this yesterday - having similar battles with my 12 year old. She has a 20 minute walk to school and we're in Scotland so she is likely to be faced with snow/rain often. Slip ons just aren't fit for the job in my opinion. "Slim rubber sole" = no grip, will be worn through by October. Total waste of money.

We're insisting on a pair of brogues or loafers. Not high fashion, but neither is the rest of her school uniform.

Cailleach666 · 05/08/2017 16:22

Clarks are having a laugh.

These look like £4.99 shoes you could buy at Shoefare.

Clarks are crap at fitting anyway and a very poor range- total rip off.

HaudYerWheeshtBawbag · 05/08/2017 16:23

Ds1 is starting comprehensive this year we have got him addidas gazelles

PoppyPopcorn · 05/08/2017 16:23

Oh and our school would not allow trainers, Converse, Vans or similar. Has to be "smart, formal shoes".

Spadequeen · 05/08/2017 16:23

Dd1 wear DM shoes. Last really well, solid shoes and look fab

TeenAndTween · 05/08/2017 16:25

Agree those don't look robust enough to last 35min walk to school for very long.

I'm not sure what DD2, going in to y8, will wear in Sept. She can't manage laces and has small narrow feet so tends to only fit the primary age style shoes which might not cut it when she is 13. She's had her current shoes since Jan 16, but I think they are finally outgrown.

HaudYerWheeshtBawbag · 05/08/2017 16:27

These are ds1, his school also have the black converse however ds doesn't like them.

PoppyPopcorn · 05/08/2017 16:30

Those Gazelles are trainers.... not suitable for many schools with a stricter dress code.

TeenAndTween · 05/08/2017 16:31

Haud Those shoes wouldn't be permitted at many schools as they are too trainer-like.

OP you are not alone! See www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/2997255-School-shoe-battle?

GreeboIsACutePussPuss · 05/08/2017 16:31

13yo sisters friends all seem to be wearing as close to trainers as they can push it, or brogues seem to be popular.

I had similar clarks shoes for work last term, I walk 40 minutes to work, in a school, so probably a similar amount of walking round in the day to your daughter will be doing, they lasted less than a month, which is actually less than the cheap shoezone ones managed.

dementedma · 05/08/2017 16:33

£75 quid bawbag???

PoppyPopcorn · 05/08/2017 16:36

Much to my surprise, DD has agreed to have these ones.
