To be annoyed at council waiting times

Dancingfairy · 02/08/2017 19:54

My council has a 3 week wait for all repairs. The light in my bathroom has gone, it's not a standar bulb so someone from the council has to come to sort it. I have to wait 3 weeks! So I cannot use my bathroom after a certain time, I usually bath my children before bed but won't be able to for 3 weeks. Aibu to think it should be sorted sooner?

I genuinely do not care about the opinion of someone so truly lacking in basic human decency.

And what makes you get to that conclusion?

My mother taught me manners. She also taught me not to suffer fools Wink

Laulau79 · 04/08/2017 11:03

TipTopTipTopClop - maybe your right that's why I pay an accountant
But I'm not as silly as to think that subsidy means not selling something for as much as you could get for it.
Are you saying I do subsidise my customers?

TipTopTipTopClop · 04/08/2017 11:41

But I'm not as silly as to think that subsidy means not selling something for as much as you could get for it.
That's merely irrational

TipTopTipTopClop · 04/08/2017 11:42

Irrational may or may not be a subsidy

Alfieisnoisy · 04/08/2017 17:45

Ah I see we still have the terminally stupid unable to take in the relevant facts of a post here.

Did you all miss the bit where the OP said it wasn't a standard light fitting and had to be changed by an electrician?

Not sure why that makes the OP feckless or entitled Confused.

But then MN seems full of judgemental fuckwits these days.. ..and yes you ARE jealous because of you were not this situation would mean nothing to you.

x2boys · 04/08/2017 17:50

I agree Alfie this thread is going round and round in circles now with people as you say to stupid and lazy to read it properly and to say people "are not jealous"there's an awful lot of nasty posts aimed at council tenantsHmm

TipTopTipTopClop · 04/08/2017 18:17

Did you all miss the bit where the OP said it wasn't a standard light fitting and had to be changed by an electrician?

What the OP actually said is that it's a non-standard bulb.

Which generally means you need to take the old bulb, google the model number, and order it on Amazon or similar.

BlackandWhitepostcards · 04/08/2017 22:54

Haven't read so the full thread but I honestly can't believe the vitriol towards the op. There are plenty of people here on mn moaning about all sorts of first world problems every day. Are they not allowed to because a someone else is suffering more? I can't understand why posters are answering the op's question with 'at least you aren't on the streets' , 'people would kill to have a council house and be able to phone the council to fix something' etc. Ridiculous.
I've never lived in a council property but a few other posters have also stated that their councils told them not to touch the bathroom light fittings so it's not the op making it up and surely if you've been told by a landlord (council or private) not to touch something, then you don't, because otherwise you're liable if it goes wrong.

MammaTJ · 04/08/2017 22:59

'It's not a standard bulb'

So it is a bulb.....

I live in a HA house. We have non standard bulbs in the bathroom. We expect to get one ourselves...

ChasingHighs · 04/08/2017 23:13

The OP live sin a tower block. I expect the rules for tampering with non tamper light fittings are a bit different.

AgnesNitt1976 · 04/08/2017 23:59

What part of told NOT to change the bulb are people failing to understand?? I'm in the same situation as op in a HA home and am not allowed to change or tamper with my bathroom light. When the bulb goes I have to contact my HA to come change it.

habenero20 · 09/08/2017 20:50

Do people choose to pay the higher rate at Boots? Because technically, the market value of an item is whatever someone is prepared to pay for it, and selling below that value (for whatever reason) is subsidising the product.

no it's not. Many vendors sell the same product at different prices. It's not the case that everyone but the highest price is subsidising that product. The goods are priced at various different levels because each merchant prices the product to maximise their profits. Their pricing scheme will depend on various factors (local clientele, suppliers' prices etc etc). Merchants don't charge higher prices because they think they will hurt their bottom line.

Councils, on the other hand, charge below market prices for different reasons. In their case someone is willing to give them more (the definition of below market price), but they choose not to take the higher rent. Their may be good reasons for doing this (preventing homelessness etc) but that the council loses money (the difference between market rent and what's charged) is the subsidy.

habenero20 · 09/08/2017 20:56

but I honestly can't believe the vitriol towards the op.

I agree. I'll be the first one to say that I think our housing system with subsidised rents is crazy, but the OP was told by the LL that they can't change the bulb. If that's the case, the LL should change it in good time. Having light is quite basic and easy, but if you are forbidden from changing it, that's it.

People need to separate their disdain for an unjust system, and a very reasonable request by someone in that system.

It's frustrating, why don't you ask if there has been any cancellations? Or ask them why repair times are taking so long. As annoying as it is , it's not the end of the world or an emergency to not have a bathroom light for 3 weeks , there are ways round it for this short and temporary period
