....it's my first language but am baffled by tourists asking if we have our own currency Confused do people not do their research before visiting a country?

blackandpurple Oh, I get that- everyone likes homegrown! But, in England, the menu just says 'roast lamb with roast potatoes, parsnips' etc... In Wales, it's Welsh lamb with Welsh potatoes and Welsh parsnips. Is that not a bit weird??

Davros · 02/08/2017 18:31

Also I don't know anyone who seriously hates or dislikes the English. Yes there's the jokey 'as long as we beat the English' but let's be honest that's born of old rivalry, and it's nothing more than jokey banter now
Sadly I think casual bigotry and prejudice shouldn't be tolerated and should be identified as such. When I told my Irish relatives that they need to let go of the English hate they trotted out the usual excuses of history and past problems. When I told them that we have German friends and holiday in Austria with not even the slightest reservations about "what they did" and the past, (additionally bearing in mind that DH is Jewish), they just shrugged their shoulders and carried on. I told them to listen to Nelson Mandela properly and not just think it applies partially.
Anyway, "proud" to be something I think is unacceptable. I love being English and I particularly love being a Londoner but I would never assume that others should think or feel the same and accept that most people like where they come from too.

themueslicamel · 02/08/2017 18:32

I am the only one hearing the welsh comments in a singsong South Wales accent?!?

MikeUniformMike · 02/08/2017 18:33

What is Saes? Do you mean Sais? Saes is not a welsh word.

Huffletuff · 02/08/2017 18:35

saes is not a Welsh word

It is here. Is Saesneg not a Welsh word then? Wink

RestingBitchFaced · 02/08/2017 18:37

YANBU I love being Welsh too. Fluent Welsh speaker here!

AboutAGallonofDietCoke · 02/08/2017 18:40

Can't focus in order to read thread....my eyes keep rolling back in their sockets.

DragonMamma · 02/08/2017 18:40

Valleys born and bred here but not a fluent Welsh speaker.

I'm another whole feels proud of being Welsh but for some reason that I can't put in to words and probably would only make sense to another that feels the same.

Huffletuff · 02/08/2017 18:41

I too don't get the "proud" thing. It's not an achievement. In any way. It's not something to be "proud" of! Be happy, thankful, whatever. But proud is just weird.

ParadiseCity · 02/08/2017 18:42

This thread is v funny. CRIED LAUGHING @ only the Welsh are proud of being Welsh.

juneau · 02/08/2017 18:45

I'm a 1/4 Welsh and I love the place. Where else has a dragon as it's national symbol? Wales rocks. I'm proud (to be a quarter Welsh) too.

MikeUniformMike · 02/08/2017 18:50

Saesneg is a Welsh word, it means English.
Saeson is Englishpeople.
Saesnes is Englishwoman.

Sais is Englishman.
Saes is sage.

MikeUniformMike · 02/08/2017 18:55

Saes came up in the second dictionary I looked at, as a version of the word saets, which is sage.

Had the best day out in Wales today... Was driving home thinking I would visit more often if it wasn't for the toll on bridge... Came home to see on the news it may be scrapped all together soon?

Huffletuff · 02/08/2017 19:02

Saes is short for Saesneg? It's a slang, abbreviated term meaning English. Not specifically man or woman.

Huffletuff · 02/08/2017 19:02

Yes, the toll is being scrapped as the debt will be paid off. Unfortunately it will see a huge increase in traffic.

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 02/08/2017 19:08

I'm Welsh by birth and residence, but my DM was English and my DF is it a Welsh speaker. GCSE Welsh was on the same line as arts subjects when I chose my options many years ago, so I have no qualification (and anyway, second language Welsh is nowhere near sufficient to get by). As a result I am overlooked for posts for which the language is desirable and treated as a second class citizen - I was roundly ignored in the staffroom of a bilingual school while on long term supply last year despite making every effort to be there and chat.

My county is on the border. Health care here is abysmal and we're just about to find out whether our closest A&E (35 miles) is about to close, the next being 50 miles away.

I don't dislike being Welsh but I'm British first and foremost, and wish I had equality with other British citizens.

Gatecrasher61 · 02/08/2017 19:09

"This thread is v funny. CRIED LAUGHING @ only the Welsh are proud of being Welsh."

I am a quarter Welsh and living in Essex. I would move there like a shot. The DH has family here so we wont be moving anytime soon.

Cantores · 02/08/2017 19:11

Another one proud to be Welsh here. I come from several generations of Welsh speakers on both sides and am from the valleys (not a particularly Welsh speaking part of Wales). I did a DNA test recently and was surprised that 60% of my DNA is Irish, 25% Scandinavian and the rest was made up of middle eastern, Iberian, north African and other 1% or less nationalities including British.

Do I feel any less Welsh? No, not at all. What makes me Welsh? Not just to have been born here (of course that's a huge part of it that was just down to luck), but to have been provided with and absorbed in Welsh culture and history my whole life. The language forms a huge part of that culture but is not all of it.

MikeUniformMike · 02/08/2017 19:13

Whereabouts in Wales are you Huff?

Huffletuff · 02/08/2017 19:17

South West.

Elphame · 02/08/2017 19:23

The hiraeth is strong tonight....

IamScarfaceClaw · 02/08/2017 19:24

I'm Welsh....I've always fancied being Scottish Blush

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 02/08/2017 19:25

To be born Welsh is to be born priviliged. Not with a silver spoon in your mouth but with music in your blood and poetry in your soul.

Righto Hmm

MikeUniformMike · 02/08/2017 19:37

It might be slang. Cwtsh is slang too. We cold blooded gogs don't use it.
We use 'cwtsio' but it means losing weight.
