....it's my first language but am baffled by tourists asking if we have our own currency Confused do people not do their research before visiting a country?

DoingTheBestICan · 02/08/2017 11:44

I'm Welsh and very proud of my heritage, I don't claim to know every single bit of my Country's history but I enjoy researching it and finding out.
I also consider myself British and again am very proud to say this.
Always Cymraeg first though Dragon

Cocklodger · 02/08/2017 12:19

In fairness I have no issue as such with English people being proud of their heritage.
But if I see a march where flags and/or poppies are thrown around in the tens or hundreds I do immediately think "Britain first" "Edl" etc. I'm sorry they've ruined our/your national symbols and I'd never call someone racist or far right etc just for having a flag up but sometimes it is the first thing that springs to mind even if it wasn't acted upon.

I refuse to wear poppies as they've been hijacked by the likes of EDL BF etc. I will donate as usual and will often buy a poppy and give it away or just stick it on the fridge but I will not where it in public not because it "offends da moslims" (it doesn't) but because I don't want to wear something used as a symbol of hatred.
So I sympathise with the previous poster sorry I've forgotten your name

marmaladeforme · 02/08/2017 12:28

Caru dy enw op!!

Love your name op for those who don't speak our language. Wink

TinklyLittleLaugh · 02/08/2017 12:28

Poppies are a symbol of hatred now? Really? The far right can only hijack what you let them hijack you know.

UrsulaPandress · 02/08/2017 12:30

Better tell all the museum shops in Ypres and Normandy about the poppies.

minesapintofwine · 02/08/2017 12:34

I'm Welsh and I'm proud enough of it. Not everyone in Wales is nice though, not everywhere in Wales is nice either.
I believe in patriotism but not patronising to those who are not lucky enough to be from the same place as you.

Cocklodger · 02/08/2017 12:35

They are to me Tinkly.
I don't know what I can do to stop the hijack really, when I don't feel comfortable wearing them because of their associations.
Look at any EDL or Britain first page or protest and you'll see plenty of poppies. When I was on Facebook they'd often be shared by my "friends" so I saw it a lot.
www.telegraph.co.uk/history/world-war-one/11207973/The-loathsome-Britain-First-are-trying-to-hijack-the-poppy-dont-let-them.html
There are several articles about it here's one from the telegraph, you don't have to agree with me but that's how I feel about it so I will not wear one (although I must stress that I do support the British legion)

Cocklodger · 02/08/2017 12:36

Ursula, why? I'm happy to buy one when there is a genuine cause (eg if the British legion or a museum is selling one, or cadets fundraising etc etc) but I will not wear them. I can support the cause behind it without wearing something that has, in my mind become a symbol of hatred thanks to the likes of Britain first

minesapintofwine · 02/08/2017 12:46

Love your name op for those who don't speak our language.

See, this comment bugged me. I don't understand the ops name. I am Welsh, born in Wales to Welsh parents, who were born to Welsh parents etc. I have lived here all my life. But because I speak very little Welsh does that make me any less Welsh than you? I know that's not what you are saying directly but I do feel you excluded non-Welsh speakers in your proven 'Welshness' in that comment.

Huffletuff · 02/08/2017 13:14

If you are proud, what are you proud of?

Huffletuff · 02/08/2017 13:16

minesapint

Completely agree. I HATE the superiority Welsh speakers seem to have over those who are Welsh but non speakers. Like they chose where their parents schooled them, where they were brought up, or what language ability they had as a child. Drives me mad and I'm a Welsh speaker. That doesn't make me better than non-Welsh speakers, it just means I grew up in a Welsh area where Welsh is spoken as a first language.

I detest people who speak Welsh to excuse non-Welsh speakers. It happens a lot in teaching. It's disgusting.

Huffletuff · 02/08/2017 13:17

Exclude, not excuse

minesapintofwine · 02/08/2017 13:24

Huffle thank you. I'm in a lot bit of a stroppy mood so didn't want to be oversensitive and cause a bun fight.

However, I have often wondered if there is that perceived superiority from some Welsh speakers. It's not obvious but sometimes there are undertones iyswim? If you have seen it for yourself then that confirms it for me and that's very Sad. We're all natives of the same country, and all humans of the same world. No need for anyone to look down on others at all.

Thank you for not being like that Flowers

RinonaWyder · 02/08/2017 13:24

I'm half Welsh and proud! I support the Welsh rugby team over Scotland even though Scotland is where I was born and brought up. Still belt out both national anthems though!

ExplodedCloud · 02/08/2017 13:34

I'm coming home for the first time in a long time (long story) very soon. Am very excited :) St Davids

Huffletuff · 02/08/2017 13:43

minesapint Obviously all Welsh speakers aren't superior but in my circles, I'd say the vast majority think they are. I've certainly witnessed it, to the point where colleagues have said they are only going to speak Welsh around certain people, both so they won't understand them and feel left out and also so they could discuss them without fear of them understanding. Horrible.

Yellowtennis · 02/08/2017 13:44

White???? wtf? how bloody ignorant?

minesapintofwine · 02/08/2017 13:59

FlamingoFlower · 02/08/2017 14:46

I'm welsh but I'm getting increasingly pissed off with welsh language being rammed down my throat to be perfectly honest.

Why are we paying to have perfectly good street and road signs replaced to have the welsh version first and the English version second?

Where I live they have never spoken welsh (as a first language), infact we were part of England at one time so it doesn't make any sense to me personally..

But hey ho nothing I can do about it except moan about it on here!

theymademejoin · 02/08/2017 14:57

@Beebee7 - I think you'll find the Northern Irish can't "fly their flag to their hearts' content" without it being considered inflammatory and offensive.

SirVixofVixHall · 02/08/2017 15:01

I'm with Tinkly. I love being Welsh.

SirVixofVixHall · 02/08/2017 15:03

Ah go on, sing along.

waitforitfdear · 02/08/2017 15:12
