Fool that I am, I chose AIBU for my first post. Eek! Here goes.

15 years ago we moved into our beautiful home. In the downstairs room (family room I guess) there is a large walk-in closet. In the back of that closet, to the right, there is another smaller closet, without a door. The bottom 3 feet is raised, and carpeted, oddly. Hardwood floors everywhere but there. DH poked around, and lo and behold: the raised floor (I shall draw a diagram if I this thread gets any interest - I know it is a prerequisite in circumstances such as these) lifts up! It is a carpet covered fake floor covering A LOCKED SAFE. A rather large, locked safe. Locked tight. It is built into the cupboard.

So here's my AIBU. Is it unreasonable to spend $500 or so to have a locksmith come crack it? We are preparing to sell up, and could find lots of other things to do with that money. We could leave it for the new owners to open, but where is the fun in that? On the other hand, what if it has even one thing of wonder (or value) locked inside?

Would you crack it?

Wou ld you take bets on what lives inside?

I've got a fast car and a pry bar. Shall I head your way? Grin

Happyeverafter73 · 03/08/2017 03:01

Ok this better not be another Victorian one..

2017SoFarSoGood · 03/08/2017 03:06

Hello acrossthepond how lovely to know you are just up the road. I feel much less alone Grin

Ooh exciting!! Grin

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 03/08/2017 03:30

Use the money you find in the safe to bring you and AcrossthePond to the first ever North American MN meet up OP! Toronto, November. See you there. Grin

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 03/08/2017 03:31

Oh yeah, I don't think it's a gun safe. Those are usually longer and narrower. For rifles and such.

SparklyUnicornPoo · 03/08/2017 03:53

DH is a locksmith, he's also very skinny, would posting him to the USA cost less than you getting someone in? He's pissing me off lately so you could even post him on to the next MNer with a safe when you're done.

rightwhine · 03/08/2017 04:11

Just putting my gun down here while I placemark wait.

PitilessYank · 03/08/2017 04:13

Is the left-hand side of the diagram an aerial view? It is really puzzling me.

Rayche1 · 03/08/2017 04:29

Gosh this is exciting.
That's not a gun safe

Smitff · 03/08/2017 04:38

That looks very new. Hmmmm. Possibly too new for previous owners to have forgotten about...?

2017SoFarSoGood · 03/08/2017 04:39

PitilessYank the left hand diagram is looking in from the door of the large closet. The safe closet is on the right in the back.

Aha!! Thank you!

2017SoFarSoGood · 03/08/2017 04:54

Sparklyunicornpoo is he sparkly and also a skinny unicorn? If so send him on. I'll pay postage. I've always wanted a unicorn. I may be clapping my hands with glee. Just a little.

Ok folks. I am stalling here. Yes. There is a real update.

($(/)@"?! Google is crap! Both stubbornalmostgothimselftoppedDH and I have tried the damned routine described three times each. Two of these times were before I got home from work, hence almost a widower posting tonight. It does not work. Nothing happens. The 'give' they say shall happen between 95 and 5 does not exist.

The number to call on the big label is a company that went out of business some years ago. The safe model is from roughly 1970's. The whole thing is set in cement. Tons of the stuff. They meant business! Can't load the pictures since I've exceeded my daily limit.

Tomorrow we are calling in a locksmith to drill. Here's to them not all being on holiday for August.

Sorry. Still a mystery.

Have just told DH of this thread and he is laughing hysterically at all of us. I may need more cement.

Shamelessly place marking.

StealthPolarBear · 03/08/2017 06:17

That shameless placemat King post is disgusting. Have some respect! ;)

Headinthedrawer · 03/08/2017 06:35

In a rental I lived in during the 90s we had a cupboard which was locked with a massive padlock and chains. After some months curiosity got the better of one of us and they picked it.... to find the biggest collection of 1970s soft porn mags you can imagine. The landlord often popped in to get something from the cupboard as well.

eatabagofdicks · 03/08/2017 06:39

Very excited for locksmith.

NeverTooOldForAnything · 03/08/2017 07:17

I wonder how many hours I am going to lose to this thread Grin

Supersoaryflappypigeon · 03/08/2017 07:22

I couldn't cope with something like that. I'd sit for hours putting in random combinations and rocking backward and forward.

Blueberryblueberry · 03/08/2017 07:25

Placemarking? Moi?! Wink
