Fool that I am, I chose AIBU for my first post. Eek! Here goes.

15 years ago we moved into our beautiful home. In the downstairs room (family room I guess) there is a large walk-in closet. In the back of that closet, to the right, there is another smaller closet, without a door. The bottom 3 feet is raised, and carpeted, oddly. Hardwood floors everywhere but there. DH poked around, and lo and behold: the raised floor (I shall draw a diagram if I this thread gets any interest - I know it is a prerequisite in circumstances such as these) lifts up! It is a carpet covered fake floor covering A LOCKED SAFE. A rather large, locked safe. Locked tight. It is built into the cupboard.

So here's my AIBU. Is it unreasonable to spend $500 or so to have a locksmith come crack it? We are preparing to sell up, and could find lots of other things to do with that money. We could leave it for the new owners to open, but where is the fun in that? On the other hand, what if it has even one thing of wonder (or value) locked inside?

Would you crack it?

Wou ld you take bets on what lives inside?

Instead of paying for a locksmith why don't you open it up to local criminals/Sherlock wannabes? See if they can crack it for experience with an offer to share the contents with them. Chances are they'll get nothing or some of a gun.

ChasedByBees · 03/08/2017 09:07

Oh my gosh, please get the locksmith quickly!

JWrecks · 03/08/2017 09:16

Place marking as I too am burning with curiosity!

Also betting it's either empty or is full of relatively boring old paperwork.

Or filled to the brim with bullion as a pp said!

namechangedforthisreply · 03/08/2017 09:22

Thanks for the update OP. I hope the locksmith can work their magic!

LyannaStarktheWolfMaid · 03/08/2017 09:38

OOoh, how exciting!

LogicalPsycho · 03/08/2017 09:43

skippingdolefully · 03/08/2017 09:47

Exciting!

WooWooSister · 03/08/2017 10:50

We found a giant safe in an old building we bought. DH opened it when I wasn't there.
It was full of paperwork and he burned it Sad
It could have been treasure maps or first manuscripts or anything! If your safe has paperwork, please promise me that you will read it. TIA

KrayKray00 · 03/08/2017 11:38

This is fucking ridiculous. I'm never going to graduate at this point with such threads.

Invested in MN more than university.

Bodear · 03/08/2017 12:30

Shamelessly place marking!

MimsyFluff · 03/08/2017 13:17

I've been watching animal kingdom they're in America can't you call someone like that Grin? What do you mean it's not real!!!

What if the safe is a haunted safe that travels around eating people who open it this is what I shall believe if you never return with an open safe

I'm going to bet it has some paperwork, money, last will and testament (uncle Bob did a fake one and ran off with the families millions and you'll be the families saviour or you can blackmail uncle Bob), a handgun and a machine gun all fully loaded with spare bullets and a treasure map. The guns will come in handy when yours sailing the open waters looking for the treasure and some one to one with uncle Bob whom you shall call Inkle Bobby after the last blackmail payment didn't go through when he works out you have the treasure map the one his been looking for for years.

Off to write a book be back tonight to check on uncle Bob 😘

A pal in Connecticut found a (much smaller and shabbier) safe when they moved into their place ... on getting a specialist in to open it they found it full of drugs

Just saying Grin

m4rdybum · 03/08/2017 13:48

I'm place marking, but I really don't want to .

It's going to be empty.

Ninabean17 · 03/08/2017 15:39

Shamelessly placemarking. Seriously hoping it's full of money, op

banivani · 03/08/2017 16:48

The great thing about it being full of money (as it will be) is that US currency (which it will be) doesn't go out of date I believe. If it'd been Swedish money you wouldn't have been able to cash those old notes. 👍🏻 So yay OP!

2017SoFarSoGood · 03/08/2017 16:52

Waving fervently to EastBay. Hellloooo there. Meet Acrossthepond - another neighbor Grin Maybe there are even more of us - that is so exciting! Hello to all Northern California MN'ers. Is the meet up in Toronto tempting? I may be moving to new home (or homeless, but with cash in hand from sale of this home so wht the hey) then but maybe not.

The darned safe. There is so much cement - it might actually be a rather small safe set in a cartload of cement. See below. Just large enough to hold one flawless diamond on a small heart-shaped satin cushion. Why the hell not?

I'm a bit nervous now, but not too nervous to want to be there when it opens.

No placemarking here!

2017SoFarSoGood · 03/08/2017 16:54

One thing I forgot to mention. Make of it what you will.

The previous owners were Russians.

That's all I've got.
