Fool that I am, I chose AIBU for my first post. Eek! Here goes.

15 years ago we moved into our beautiful home. In the downstairs room (family room I guess) there is a large walk-in closet. In the back of that closet, to the right, there is another smaller closet, without a door. The bottom 3 feet is raised, and carpeted, oddly. Hardwood floors everywhere but there. DH poked around, and lo and behold: the raised floor (I shall draw a diagram if I this thread gets any interest - I know it is a prerequisite in circumstances such as these) lifts up! It is a carpet covered fake floor covering A LOCKED SAFE. A rather large, locked safe. Locked tight. It is built into the cupboard.

So here's my AIBU. Is it unreasonable to spend $500 or so to have a locksmith come crack it? We are preparing to sell up, and could find lots of other things to do with that money. We could leave it for the new owners to open, but where is the fun in that? On the other hand, what if it has even one thing of wonder (or value) locked inside?

Would you crack it?

Wou ld you take bets on what lives inside?

but Mimsy I'm 8 hour ahead of you. I'd be happy to oblige but if I leave early and then I get fired I'm going to be awfully sad when it turns out there is no money nor anything of value in this f'n safe

Nosy bitch here

Miserylovescompany2 · 02/08/2017 21:47

Absolutely nothing constructive to add...

just blatantly place marking is all

northernlites · 02/08/2017 21:55

Alternatively... you might never have to work again if you leave work now and find bullion in the safe? It's worth consideration

2017SoFarSoGood · 02/08/2017 22:00

northernlites I like how you think Grin

How have you lived there 15 years and never got an angle grinder out to the bloody thing? I can't cope with waiting for xmas day to open presents and your waiting 15 years to uncover either a treasure map, dead body or someone's used sex toys.

Hortonlovesahoo · 02/08/2017 22:09

Hopefully the video will show you how to do it and not just confuse you further! My parents had an old gun chest / cupboard that was hidden under the stairs that I never knew existed until we were spring cleaning their house and found it.

It was empty though :-(

DontTouchTheMoustache · 02/08/2017 22:17

Why do I care so much about this? It has no bearing on my life, why am I so invested?

gingercat02 · 02/08/2017 22:28

I was way overly invested in the victorian safe thread bloody woman . Our safe has spare car keys, keys to my Mum's house, passports and other travel stuff, d's birth certificate, DH company papers. Hope your one is more exciting

GriseldaChop · 02/08/2017 22:30

How exciting! I'm hoping it will be open by the time I wake up!

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 02/08/2017 22:31

Placemarking for the safe and in the hope of hearing more about Anatidaes hidden floor - how on earth was it not blatantly obvious? Are there pictures? Pretty please?

TheMaddHugger · 02/08/2017 22:36

@2017SoFarSoGood '8 hour ahead of you.'

Aussie? Kiwi ? US ?

GlitteryFluff · 02/08/2017 22:39

I think op said they were in the US

SnowiestMountain · 02/08/2017 22:42

I suspect it's an empty gun safe Sad

PurpleDragon76 · 02/08/2017 22:44

Ooo exciting! I used to dream of finding abandoned houses where people just left and I got to nose through it all. My house is boring and new build.

I have a feeling your safe is empty but I would have to open it or drive myself insane wondering

picklemepopcorn · 02/08/2017 22:54

Ah, come on! I'm never going to get any sleep with the wondering... when you said you'd do it tonight, I thought you meant my tonight! Pants...

NC12345 · 02/08/2017 22:55

I need to know what's in this safe!

2017SoFarSoGood · 03/08/2017 00:12

San Francisco area Madhugger

Pickleme I shall try my hardest to turn day into night for you

I had no idea the pressure of an AIBU could be this much. Not sure I'm up to it Grin

Any news?

GwenStaceyRocks · 03/08/2017 01:34

I'm concerned about the combination of randomly smashing lights and a mysterious locked safe. If it's actually the door to the hellmouth call Buffy can you imagine the reconstruction costs 😯 of the house and for the police as they track down MNers from all over the world to explain their vital role in proceedings.

Kursk · 03/08/2017 01:50

Pretty sure it's not a gun safe

ColourfulOrangex · 03/08/2017 01:56

Oh I hope it's not empty

SteppingOnToes · 03/08/2017 01:58

Schroedinger's safe :)

justilou1 · 03/08/2017 02:01

This is going to be soul-destroying if it's empty!!! I hope it's full of diamonds and cash!!!
