Fool that I am, I chose AIBU for my first post. Eek! Here goes.

15 years ago we moved into our beautiful home. In the downstairs room (family room I guess) there is a large walk-in closet. In the back of that closet, to the right, there is another smaller closet, without a door. The bottom 3 feet is raised, and carpeted, oddly. Hardwood floors everywhere but there. DH poked around, and lo and behold: the raised floor (I shall draw a diagram if I this thread gets any interest - I know it is a prerequisite in circumstances such as these) lifts up! It is a carpet covered fake floor covering A LOCKED SAFE. A rather large, locked safe. Locked tight. It is built into the cupboard.

So here's my AIBU. Is it unreasonable to spend $500 or so to have a locksmith come crack it? We are preparing to sell up, and could find lots of other things to do with that money. We could leave it for the new owners to open, but where is the fun in that? On the other hand, what if it has even one thing of wonder (or value) locked inside?

Would you crack it?

Wou ld you take bets on what lives inside?

Omg you have to open it!
This reminds me of my parents house. In my brothers room there is a fake plug sockets that is actually some sort of mini safe/ lock box.
I can't understand how they are not dying from curiosity!!! But apparently the people who owned the house before us were a bit dodgy so they don't want to know! But for me that make me all the more intriguing

Oooooooh

steppemum · 02/08/2017 13:23

PLEASE do somethign before then!

not sure my blood pressure could deal with waiting so long.

Natsku · 02/08/2017 13:30

Shameless placemark

ncbacktoblack · 02/08/2017 13:33

It will be empty.

2017SoFarSoGood · 02/08/2017 19:21

Here are pictures to show how this darned safe managed to avoid me all these years. Now that all of hordingbastasdtoomanyfrickinguitarsDH has moved his stuff out, it does look a tad suspicous. If it was my closet, I may have investigated. Perhaps. More likely it would be buried under a pile of purses or shoes or baskets of yarn. Anyway, I digress. The important update is that there is indeed a video (may all of the gods bless the google) and tonight I shall personally be performing all actions prescribed therein. Wish me well. Oh wait. someone has to record this. Unless I have killed him off for getting in my way, perhaps nicekindsometimesprofessionalphotographerDH can play that role. Whatever happens, it shall be caught on camera and shared.

I confess to being a little scared, and a little excited.

Let's all agree it is empty. That is so much easier to cope with than human remains. Grin

I was home alone, and two floors up so not sure why it fell

Because Chucky's twin is in the safe...

pinkblink · 02/08/2017 19:46

Found it more effective than a sweet and lots of praise like we did with our 5 year old, as the chart meant he had a physical reminder of his achievements and could see how close he was to a treat

pinkblink · 02/08/2017 19:46

Sorry wrong post 😂😂😂

2017SoFarSoGood · 02/08/2017 19:50

Floellabumbags I have to say it surprised me that nobody else caught that. It took me aback when I wrote it.

Chucky. Thanks for the image. Grin

Good luck!

Anatidae · 02/08/2017 19:54

I would have had that bit of carpet up within seconds of getting the keys.

My aunt has a whole random extra FLOOR they didn't realise was there when they bought . Five rooms. How can you possibly miss a whole floor?? Well I know why, the sellers were super dodgy criminals and had hidden it. But still. A whole floor.

How disappointing if it turns out to be empty!

2017SoFarSoGood · 02/08/2017 20:16

Sixinthebed yep, here it is. Now that we've found it we think it goes all the way to the floor, so pretty big.

Anatidae How marvelous - a whole floor! Makes the purchase quite a bargain I imagine. I have had a recurring dream of finding hidden rooms/floors/whole houses, and they were fully furnished as if the residents had just stepped out. I recall only one needed cleaning, but even the beds were made. Wish that was true.

Good luck! Fingers crossed for a more exciting conclusion to this safe-cracking saga Grin

ijustwantfiveminutespeace · 02/08/2017 20:20

Exciting.
Doesn't look as if it will be easy to get into. These things are made so you can't get into it. Good luck...
drugs?????
Who did you buy the house from? Did they have a story??? X

Huffletuff · 02/08/2017 20:21

If it's anything like the safe next to me in the farm office right now, it's full of.....a load of boring old shite.

And spare keys for the tractors.

Brew and Cake and settling in for the evening.

Should be good .

Fingers crossed for something interesting inside

Mulberry72 · 02/08/2017 20:51

We live in a rented house that has a locked safe built into the wall, it was painted over when the landlord painted over it before we moved in! I'm itching to get it open and see if there's anything in it.

StarryCorpulentCunt · 02/08/2017 20:54
