Fool that I am, I chose AIBU for my first post. Eek! Here goes.

15 years ago we moved into our beautiful home. In the downstairs room (family room I guess) there is a large walk-in closet. In the back of that closet, to the right, there is another smaller closet, without a door. The bottom 3 feet is raised, and carpeted, oddly. Hardwood floors everywhere but there. DH poked around, and lo and behold: the raised floor (I shall draw a diagram if I this thread gets any interest - I know it is a prerequisite in circumstances such as these) lifts up! It is a carpet covered fake floor covering A LOCKED SAFE. A rather large, locked safe. Locked tight. It is built into the cupboard.

So here's my AIBU. Is it unreasonable to spend $500 or so to have a locksmith come crack it? We are preparing to sell up, and could find lots of other things to do with that money. We could leave it for the new owners to open, but where is the fun in that? On the other hand, what if it has even one thing of wonder (or value) locked inside?

Would you crack it?

Wou ld you take bets on what lives inside?

20 pages I've just read and it's still not open! Come on!

SticksOutLikeDogsBalls · 05/08/2017 00:27

Place marking!

readyforno2 · 05/08/2017 00:52

I avoided this threat after the Victorian safe one but I'm well and truly sucked in now.

readyforno2 · 05/08/2017 00:53

Ffs.. I avoided the threaD

oldlaundbooth · 05/08/2017 00:59

I thought this thread had been deleted?

OlennasWimple · 05/08/2017 01:10

It's either going to be a total let down (empty) or amazing (stacks of bullion and a mysterious map)

TinyPawz · 05/08/2017 03:10

Did Ken ever get back to you?

fizzytonicplease · 05/08/2017 05:00

This is going to be the Victorian safe all over again, why am I putting myself through it again!

MrsOverTheRoad · 05/08/2017 05:16

It's another of THOSE threads.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 05/08/2017 06:21

Placemarking for the first time ever Grin

flowergrrl77 · 05/08/2017 07:28

No, you didn't make it up, you DO have to know how many left rotations and right rotations between each number. Last number often had to be between 10 and 90 and if the ppl that last set the combination are anything like me, every number used will end in a zero or a 5 :D

Tofutti · 05/08/2017 07:40

Yeah, placemarking...for the first time ever too

FluffyWhiteTowels · 05/08/2017 07:59

The tension is giving me a headache

laura1206 · 05/08/2017 09:11

Has Mr SafeCracker arrived on horseback yet to save the day?! I had an awful night with my son and I couldn't stop thinking of this safe!

SheGotOffThePlane · 05/08/2017 09:14

FUUUCK! I've deliberately left this thread for over 24 hours so I could come back to a nicely tied up mystery. And there's nothing Shock

northernlites · 05/08/2017 09:56

Mr safecracker is now at cabin for weekend... what will we do?
Previous Russian owners (RPO) not only had Faberge egg in safe but also crystal ball.
RPO looked into crystal ball and saw the future mumsnetters wringing their hands and twitching with anticipation... and then left their safe empty ensuring its was safely locked again...watching their crystal ball with glee at the long faces of utter disappointment and hours of precious family time invested into a thread that eventually led to path of Unenlightenment 🤦🏻‍♀️

northernlites · 05/08/2017 09:57

Ooops RPO should read PRO

Badweekjustgotworse · 05/08/2017 11:04

I'm sensing a gap in the market, maybe I should retrain and get myself a stethoscope Grin (might be quicker than waiting for the mysterious Bay Area bad ass to get back to op)

northernlites · 05/08/2017 11:46

I have a stethoscope but no safe-cracking-skills

northernlites · 05/08/2017 11:49

However like you say a good opportunity to retrain... working for the NHS often does my head in Confused

PossibiliTea · 05/08/2017 12:02

Have we got an ETA on the workmen who are coming to sort this? This thread is the first thought in the morning and last and night and it can't go on Grin

pieceofpurplesky · 05/08/2017 12:06

I am about to go off grid (my parents have no wifi and no 4G) for a few days. Thinking of delaying my trip ...

Ijustwantaquietlife · 05/08/2017 12:07

EnidButton · 05/08/2017 12:43

I also have a stethoscope and can tut, suck air in through my teeth and shake my head whilst writing a large amount down on a notepad.

You'll have to pay for my flight over and accommodation but I can be there in a couple of days.

BlahBlahSaidSquish · 05/08/2017 12:53

I need to know what's in it. Has he called back yet?
