Fool that I am, I chose AIBU for my first post. Eek! Here goes.

15 years ago we moved into our beautiful home. In the downstairs room (family room I guess) there is a large walk-in closet. In the back of that closet, to the right, there is another smaller closet, without a door. The bottom 3 feet is raised, and carpeted, oddly. Hardwood floors everywhere but there. DH poked around, and lo and behold: the raised floor (I shall draw a diagram if I this thread gets any interest - I know it is a prerequisite in circumstances such as these) lifts up! It is a carpet covered fake floor covering A LOCKED SAFE. A rather large, locked safe. Locked tight. It is built into the cupboard.

So here's my AIBU. Is it unreasonable to spend $500 or so to have a locksmith come crack it? We are preparing to sell up, and could find lots of other things to do with that money. We could leave it for the new owners to open, but where is the fun in that? On the other hand, what if it has even one thing of wonder (or value) locked inside?

Would you crack it?

Wou ld you take bets on what lives inside?

I really hope there's a map for buried treasure ! We could have a MN treasure hunt. I envision 20 women all quashed into a rowing boat , making their way to a deserted island, rowing like crazy to get ahead of Vlad in his super duper speed boat. Grin

WineAndTiramisu · 04/08/2017 20:24

Come on, we couldn't have three resolutions in one day people, one had to be delayed!

2017SoFarSoGood · 04/08/2017 20:29

No call back yet. It is only noonish so the day is not lost.

Note that I did do additional research before resorting to seeking a safecracker for rent. Pry bars or angle grinders are not recommended for other than cheap safes. This appears not be one of these, based on the elaborate installation and sheer solidness of the bits we can see.

CremeFresh if this comes to pass we must find a way to share the information with MN but not those others who shall remain nameless

We have enough smart peole here to create an unbreakable code. I may work on whilst I wait. It might reduce my blood pressure to a level that is not going to blow my head open like a popped balloon.

Arrrrghhhhhhh I need to know!! Come on Mr Safecracker! Angry

FairfaxAikman · 04/08/2017 21:41

Do you know if the combination is four or six digits.
From experience (bloody bike lock) I know if you've got enough time you can go through all the combinations from 0000 to 9999.
Are you patient obsessed enough to take that option?

Yep me too!

alibongo5 · 04/08/2017 21:46

Why didn't that bold? Tut!

2017SoFarSoGood · 04/08/2017 21:58

FairfaxAikman we have no clue how many digits it is. We have played with it until our fingers hurt, and that is not all that hurts given it is in a very awkward spot set in cement. We keep trying. Thing with a safe is that you have to know how many left and right and times to pass go. Okay, I made that bit up. Very frustrating and I have no patience. NONE. All gone.

Oh poo I was hoping for a perfect Friday with splendid resolutions for CFN dog groomer bastards parking and CFN Spangran garden doors already in the bag. Clearly not. Sad

StarryCorpulentCunt · 04/08/2017 23:43

For God's sake if he has a waiting list I will scream.

Jessiecat27 · 04/08/2017 23:48

Can't you like, hammer the cement? Is that a thing? I'm so desperate to know now!
