ARE YOU SHIFTING ME?!

I'm fucking livid. Oh's 'D'gm came round yesterday, we've recently moved house and they both tidied and organised whilst I was out (really appreciated it) just gone to look for my council tax letter to send off along with a few other important documents and I can't find them anywhere. Checked in the bin and all of my bank statements, hospital letters, receipts for recently bought items I needed to keep have been shredded. No sign of anything else so I'm assuming they were also shredded and are in the bin outside! Would you go round to a family members house and bin their important documents?! I've never been so angry in my life. Angry

You have a right to be pissed. I am just not sure at who?

mrscropley · 30/07/2017 15:13

I would assume this means you know now not to give out spare keys to family members. . .

Jessiecat27 · 30/07/2017 15:16

Not sure what happened there or why some things re-posted? I'm ignoring all further comments on here bexcuse I'm not having people blame me, how ridiculous!

AnnieAnoniMouse · 30/07/2017 15:20

OMG you'd have heard me from there!

I wouldn't have wanted them doing anything tbh, but clearly you appreciated some of the help.

...but touching your private paperwork was intrusive & rude, shredding is was beyond the pale. DH would be getting it with both barrels & then some. FFS what were they thinking?

EllaHen · 30/07/2017 15:21

Jesus Christ - of course YANBU.

Please ignore posters telling you otherwise.

It's a massive invasion of privacy. Both of them to blame. No-one should read, bin or shed someone else's mail.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 30/07/2017 15:22

Oh, ok then. 95% (or more) of the messages were supportive, but if you want to throw a strop, off you pop.

MartinJD · 30/07/2017 15:22

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon: No i dont write anything on my documents, but then they are all filed away correctly so have no need to. The point is If the OP had bothered to file important documents away then perhaps there would not have been an issue here.

indigox · 30/07/2017 15:23

When you say they where filed away where they actually marked as such? IE do not shred

Yes, because this is totally a thing. Hmm

RadioGaGoo · 30/07/2017 15:26

You are a GF MartinJD. It's her house, she should be able to keep documents where she likes without someone deciding they need shredding.

MartinJD · 30/07/2017 15:27

Jammydodger81: Please try not to use such vulgar language.

Katedotness1963 · 30/07/2017 15:29

I would never touch someone else's mail or paperwork, let alone destroy it!

aaaaargghhhhelpme · 30/07/2017 15:31

Martin - mumsnet are fine with swearing. If you're not, I'd suggest these aren't the boards for you

My point still stands - the op shouldn't have to bloody write do not shred. Who in their right mind starts shredding other people's stuff?

LizzieVereker · 30/07/2017 15:31

Oh my goodness, I can't believe they did that! How intrusive. I think your OH should set aside next weekend to have a lovely CSI jigsaw session, where he painstakingly finds and tapes back together the most important documents.

QueenArseClangers · 30/07/2017 15:32

You new here Martin?
You don't get to tell posters not to swear! Grin

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 30/07/2017 15:32

I don't file documents away straight away but that doesn't mean DH can shred them - my house, I can leave them where I like! Surely any normal person would ask first. If I was helping someone tidy up I wouldn't even go through personal correspondence, I would put it in a pile for the owner to sort through.

Jessiecat27 · 30/07/2017 15:33

Glad there is some normal people on here!

OP posts:
MartinJD · 30/07/2017 15:34

RadioGaGoo: It's unfortunate that stuff got shredded but accidents do happen, unfortunately. I'm sure the OPs relatives did not intend to shred important docs.

As another poster said, many people (myself included) have a tendency to cling on to any and all official looking papers long after they have served on being useful. Most families have a draw full of cruft.

If the actual important stuff is kept separately and safely filed away then it's safe from the occasional cull.

SweetErmengarde · 30/07/2017 15:34

Slightly off topic I'm aware, but what is a GF?

My first guess was "goat f*er" but that can't be right...

Jessiecat27 · 30/07/2017 15:36

I keep reading it as gluten free but I prefer goat fucker!

aaaaargghhhhelpme · 30/07/2017 15:37

Martin - what kind of accident happened that led to paperwork 'accidentally' falling into the shredder?

No one should be shredding other people stuff.

I'm sure they think they're being helpful. But that's no accident. They've made a conscious decision to put someone else's stuff in a shredder.

Op - I hope you get massive apologies. And flowers. And wine

What were they doing going through personal documents in the first place? It's possible to tidy up without poking their noses into other people's private letters!

I wouldn't want them back in my house to be honest.

I'd actually go ape shit if this happened to me. A bit of tidying I'd appreciate but knowingly destroying my personal papers definitely not!

Lweji · 30/07/2017 15:39

Martin, your DW is not being unreasonable.

This
Official paperwork and receipts would just get stashed away for the owner to sort through themselves.
Is the only correct mode of action.

And never ever allow anyone else to even touch bank statements or hospital letters without the owner's consent.

It doesn't even merit a discussion.
