to read on my phone in the cinema?

Just that really, taking the kids to see Captain Underpants at the cinema this afternoon and am wondering if I can read a book using the kindle app on my phone? Or will the light annoy people? I would still have it turned off so it won't ring or anything.

My youngest is only 5 so I feel he's still a bit small to sit in the cinema without an adult while I sit in the cafe in the foyer, which would have been my number one choice.

I was in a theatre where someone was doing this today. It is very annoying

Lillithxxx · 30/07/2017 19:40

Ffs. You even thought to ask???
Did your parents not teach you good manners in company?

I ouldn't read on my phone but I have listened to my iPod ( audiobook).
I think it may have been Happy Feet that tipped me over the edge.Or The War between Cats and Dogs 2...
I decided at that point that I was never going to see another film with talking animals in...

MoonPower · 30/07/2017 19:50

Have a nap?

never mind other cinema goers! why even bother taking your son out somewhere he obviously wants to go if you are not going to engage with him when you are there?! wont hurt you to pretending you enjoy being his mum and doing these things with him

WinifredAtwellsOtherPiano · 30/07/2017 21:18

As a fellow Wittertainee, I think I'm going to buck the trend and point out that whilst Mark takes a hardline approach to the Code, to the extent of insisting on total compliance even if you are the only person in the cinema , Simon is prepared to make exemptions on phone use for films such as "Tinkerbell and the Legend of Barbie's Rainbow Dinosaur Pokémon" which offer literally nothing for the viewer over 8 years old.

However Captain Underpants doesn't fall below that bar -it may not be to everyone's taste but it is an actual film with some semblance of attention to quality control - so you don't have a dispensation for phone use.

RandomDent · 30/07/2017 21:20

Winifred so I'm going to assume that The Emoji Movie will permit full phone use. :o

MakeItStopNeville · 30/07/2017 21:50

The Emoji movie was literally the most painful movie I've ever seen. Use your phone to your heart's desire!

babsjonhson · 30/07/2017 21:55

Yabu

Are you unable to zone out without your phone? I use the time watching shit like minions at the cinema to daydream... Something I hardly ever get time to do!

colinthecaterpillars · 30/07/2017 21:57

Absolutely don't want to see emoji movie, but knowing my ds does is not all that bad.captain underpants is quite funny for a adult in places

ChangelingToday · 30/07/2017 22:09

My kids saw Captain Underpants today, they loved it, dh says he had a lovely nap..

MsGameandWatching · 30/07/2017 22:39

YABTU, and I'd ask cinema staff to kick you out. How fucking inconsiderate.

Well I think you'd be disappointed. I think a warning before bodily removing the phone screen perp from their seat and throwing them out would be rather more likely.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 30/07/2017 22:48

Mumtotwobs - how very arrogant. Why on earth do you think that this very explicit instruction does not apply to you?

Very arrogant.

Joking apart - I don't think I'm in any way arrogant and I have said has I been told to stop I would have

Still arrogant. Why should you have to be asked? The anouncement applies to everyone.

Kailoer · 30/07/2017 22:52

I think OP has got the message

But I'm shocked anyone needs to ask if this is appropriate/acceptable... In no scenario would this idea be reasonable or considerate to others..!

Fbpn · 31/07/2017 00:32

Set the back light to black and make the text white. Lighting low on the app and it works well.

Anyone arguing about someone behind me being distracted is making a moot point because I sit in the back row. Plus anyone finding this (see screenshot pic) distracting must have eyes like a hawk. This isn't the same as someone surfing Facebook!

As i said above i was behind someone with dark setting and you can still see it.
It is setting a bad example to your children.

Riversleep · 31/07/2017 08:18

Yes massively irritating. Other parents have had to pay to accompany their kids to a film they dont want to see. The light will be a pita. Get some headphones and listen to music. Also, Captain Underpants is surprisingly sweet. I enjoyed it Grin

teaandakitkat · 31/07/2017 08:20

Just to say again, I did not read on my phone. Thanks for your advice on that.

As for the whole kids feeling unloved because their mother did not watch every single second of Captain Underpants, or did not watch them watch every second of Captain Underpants- seriously? They had nachos, Smarties, a silly kids film and each other. Their cinema-going experience was not diminished by me having my eyes closed some of the time. Although they were a bit cheesed off at only having bottles of tap water to drink and not a giant coca cola but I'm sure they'll get over it.

I've refused to pay full price for the emoji movie so my kids will have to wait until it's on at the cheap rate!
