Woman in Lidl - carrier bags at dusk!

I've just got home from doing a big shop at Lidl and am wondering what your take on the following situation is. I had done quite a bit of shopping (nearly filled a trolley) and was unpacking at the till. A lady came to wait behind me with a basket with only a few items in so I asked her if she'd like to go in front of me as it was taking me a while to unpack. She said thanks and went in front. I'd taken some reusable bags but had misjudged how many I'd need so had put three of their plastic bags at the front of my shopping. My turn came and the lad at the till starts ringing my shopping through when the lady who went ahead of me comes back to the till (I assume after looking at her receipt) and says she's been charged for three carrier bags. It turns out the lad on the till has put them through at the end of her shopping rather than at the start of mine. He apologises and explains he can refund but she'll have to wait as he's started ringing my shopping through. She turns to me and asks if I can pay her for them - 27p. I have a pound coin in my pocket but she has no change. Cue a bit of tutting and looking at her watch and an under the breath 'I really haven't got time for this!' I carried on sorting my shopping (and got the bags re-scanned) while she stood sighing until my transaction was finished. AIBU in thinking she could have let it go for the sake of 27p? I had let her go ahead of me which saved her a good five minutes in the queue which she then lost hanging around for her refund! Would you have bothered?

YANBU... I wouldn't have waited around and/or made such a drama out of such a small amount. It was hardly your fault!

Needsomeflapjacks · 28/07/2017 20:04

Yabu.

Carrier bags are sacred items. .

Grin

She was a nitwit imo. .

Whisky2014 · 28/07/2017 20:05

She's an idiot. The money being refunded was nothing to do with you AND since you saved her time she could have seen the 27p as a fee for that ifkwim. Some people!

MissAlabamaWhitman · 28/07/2017 20:07

Oh.

What a dickhead she is.

Of course YANBU.

Birdsgottaf1y · 28/07/2017 20:07

There's been times in my life when 27p has mattered.

However I don't understand people who stand around oblivious whilst the cashier is putting items through that aren't there's.

I've learned over the years that everyone you encounter aren't going to have stable personalities etc, so you've got to learn to ignore.

WrittenandGrown · 28/07/2017 20:08

I think I would have just told her to keep the £1 coin you had.

WorraLiberty · 28/07/2017 20:09

Would you have bothered? - No

Would I have bothered if I really needed the 27p - Yes of course

Hereslookingatyoukid · 28/07/2017 20:10

I'm glad it's not just me! I was a bit bemused that it was such a big deal particularly as she seemed in a rush and then hung around for a good five minutes extra while I got sorted! It certainly confirmed that old saying 'there's nowt so queer as folk' 😀

If I had been her, I would have taken 3 carrier bags off the shelf for myself and jogged on.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 28/07/2017 20:11

If she only had a few items why did she not notice the cashier scanning the bags - he/she presumably then put them with her things? Confused

Liadain · 28/07/2017 20:12

She's a prima donna, pay no mind to her. You tried to do her a favour, the mistake wasn't your fault. Also not your fault that she didn't have change.

Some people just don't know how to accept a kindness gracefully.

ConstanceCraving · 28/07/2017 20:13

I'd have said that I would take 3 carrier bags instead of hanging around for 27p!

Hereslookingatyoukid · 28/07/2017 20:16

WrittenandGrown - I know what you mean but I kind of thought why should I pay £1 for them when it wasn't really anything to do with me? That might make me just as bad though! 😂
Sorry to PP if I sounded flippant about 27p as I do realise that sometimes every penny adds up but it just seemed a lot of effort when it was obviously a huge annoyance to her to hang around. Although thinking about it, maybe she had to hang around as it was necessary to get that money back. Feel a bit bad now 🙁

If she only had a few items why did she not notice the cashier scanning the bags

They sometimes just manually enter the code, which a customer in a hurry might not notice.

Serialweightwatcher · 28/07/2017 20:41

I'd have asked for carrier bags too - she could have used them next time ... or left the 27p for goodness sake when you let her in.

Out of interest, how much approx was your shopping for a full trolley in Lidl - just done my tesco online shop and everything's gone up - I've hardly got anything food wise for nearly £90 Sad

Whisky2014 · 28/07/2017 20:42

Yes but ithe wasn't like she wasn't going to get it was it? She just had to wait.

kali110 · 28/07/2017 20:43

I dont understand why everyone is mocking her.
You don't know her circumstances, maybe she really needs every penny Confused

Mummyoflittledragon · 28/07/2017 20:44

Well she had time to pay for her shopping on the assumption she would be served after you. Childish behaviour.

Whisky2014 · 28/07/2017 20:45

Kali she was always going to get it though wasn't she. It's not up to the OP to reimburse her. How would the op get the 27p back? I doubt the woman would have left the receipt for the till person to do the refund

Serialweightwatcher · 28/07/2017 20:46

kali110 maybe she does, but like people have said, she could have waited - she would have had to wait initially if OP hadn't been kind enough to let her through so the "I really haven't got time for this", tutting and sighing was completely unnecessary

Cakeorchocolate · 28/07/2017 20:49

No ywnbu. I'm definitely have let that go. I wouldn't have given her £1 either!

Hereslookingatyoukid · 28/07/2017 21:14

Serial weight watcher - I spent just under £70 which included three bottles of wine. I find it pretty reasonable for most things and definitely cheaper than Tesco but the tills are often quite a hectic experience as the cashiers scan the stuff really quickly and I'm always struggling to keep up! 😀

Pantryboy · 28/07/2017 21:32

I would have let it go tbh it was kind of you to let her go in front of you op some ppl!

SnowiestMountain · 28/07/2017 21:36

She might have needed it though... what if she needed it to make up a bus fare or something?

ThePants999 · 28/07/2017 21:39

Waiting 5 minutes for 27p is effectively earning £3.24/hr. I sure wouldn't.
