Woman in Lidl - carrier bags at dusk!

I've just got home from doing a big shop at Lidl and am wondering what your take on the following situation is. I had done quite a bit of shopping (nearly filled a trolley) and was unpacking at the till. A lady came to wait behind me with a basket with only a few items in so I asked her if she'd like to go in front of me as it was taking me a while to unpack. She said thanks and went in front. I'd taken some reusable bags but had misjudged how many I'd need so had put three of their plastic bags at the front of my shopping. My turn came and the lad at the till starts ringing my shopping through when the lady who went ahead of me comes back to the till (I assume after looking at her receipt) and says she's been charged for three carrier bags. It turns out the lad on the till has put them through at the end of her shopping rather than at the start of mine. He apologises and explains he can refund but she'll have to wait as he's started ringing my shopping through. She turns to me and asks if I can pay her for them - 27p. I have a pound coin in my pocket but she has no change. Cue a bit of tutting and looking at her watch and an under the breath 'I really haven't got time for this!' I carried on sorting my shopping (and got the bags re-scanned) while she stood sighing until my transaction was finished. AIBU in thinking she could have let it go for the sake of 27p? I had let her go ahead of me which saved her a good five minutes in the queue which she then lost hanging around for her refund! Would you have bothered?

Yeh but if you needed it, you would

stayathomegardener · 28/07/2017 21:49

To be fair her quibble was 27p and yours was 73p not much in it really.

The fact she actually noticed and checked implies her financial need was greater than yours.

Grin I honestly think this comment is peak MN.

HipsterHunter · 28/07/2017 22:38

She "didn;t have time for this" PAH she would have been behind the OP if she hadn';t kindly let her go in front!

Serialweightwatcher · 29/07/2017 09:14

Hereslookingatyoukid that's amazing ... tried it a little while ago but couldn't take to it - definitely going to try again though because Tesco is just getting silly and I don't seem to get much ... know what you mean about the tills - it's like Aldi and that stresses me out so I only get bits

HiggeldyPiggeldy · 29/07/2017 12:31

there have been times when 27p has mattered a lot to me, and its possible it did to her, the fact she came back suggests it does matter, she was wrong to stand there tutting but you were wrong to judge her

19lottie82 · 29/07/2017 12:35

Maybe she did need it yes, but that's no excuse for her huffing and puffing, the OP let her go in front of her anyway so in essence she wouldn't have lost any time would she?

kali110 · 29/07/2017 12:53

Whisky2014 serial the huffing was not needed, but all the comments that she should have just left it, and she's an idiot for the sake of the little money when she may have really needed it.

Arealhumanbeing · 29/07/2017 13:24

True that she may have needed the 27p but the tutting was unnecessary given that the OP had done her a favour.

Whisky2014 · 29/07/2017 13:47

She was an idiot because she expected the OP to resolve her problem and then took it out on the OP when It was actually nothing to do with the OP at all. The cashier made the error.

HiggeldyPiggeldy · 29/07/2017 14:15

I did say she was wrong to tut etc that was rude, she could have been incredibly embarrassed at having to ask for the money back, I know when times were bad for me I would have done and would maybe have been this way to cover my humiliation

stop judging and look at it from another viewpoint

limitedperiodonly · 29/07/2017 14:48

The fact she actually noticed and checked implies her financial need was greater than yours.

I always check my receipt and I'm not in financial need. It's just what my mum taught me. Busy cashiers often make mistakes, like this one did.

My mum would have waited patiently for her 27p refund - she wasn't in financial need either. I'd have taken three extra bags for later, like another poster said.

LizzieMacQueen · 29/07/2017 15:52

Odd that the cashier did this. If she only had a handful of items no way would she have needed 3 carrier bags.

gandalf456 · 29/07/2017 15:55

Her imatience is misplaced and rather ungracious. Yadnbu

doobree · 29/07/2017 15:56

Doh. One of those annoying things isn't it. Good deed gone wrong. It happens.

I wouldn't have particularly wanted to give up the 27p either - it kind of defeats the point of shopping cheaply at Lidl! But equally hanging around 5 mins for a refund is annoying.

If she really needed the money she probably would have cried or been a bit more desperate rather than huffing. I'd have cried at having to stand up for 5 mins to wait! So on that basis I'd have said don't worry and to put it in a charity box if there was one.

In the good old days they'd have just been able to open the till, give the money and sort it out afterwards.

Or they could have called a manager to override and get the money more quickly, or send you to customer services, but its Lidl so minimal staff and services. You get what you pay for I guess. I need help someitmes so I like Sainsburys as they usually can't do enough to help. Sainsburys more so than Waitrose I find.

Sighing just makes it bad for everyone :(

MrsJamesAspey · 29/07/2017 16:12

If she'd been in front of you in the first place and had come back because she'd been charged twice for one of her items and the cashier said sorry you need to wait until I've finished serving this customer, you wouldn't have been expected to refund her so why were you expected to refund her just because she'd been charged for your bags.

Sainsbury's and tescos have customer service tills which would sort this out but that's why there goods are more expensive, when people shop in Aldi and Lidl they have to accept the customer service isn't as good.

gandalf456 · 29/07/2017 16:17

Yes, they have no separate desk. The cashier does everything, including helping other cashiers

MommaGee · 29/07/2017 16:42

They might have manually entered the code but surely he moved them over to her side so she could pack them. So were thr bags on her side? If so its obvious does been charged and she should have spoken up

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 29/07/2017 16:47

Wtf?! It's 27p! Who the fuck needs 27p?!

ConstanceCraving · 29/07/2017 16:49

My sister would wait for 27p. She definitely doesn't need to but she's naturally very tight careful with her money. It would grate on her if she left without getting it.

People who are skint? Who might not 27p at that second but also might not have enough to buy a loaf of bread tomorrow without it? Do you never see threads on here where people literally are living on every penny they own?

Hereslookingatyoukid · 29/07/2017 19:16

I definitely will think again before being so flippant over an amount of money - apologies if I offended anyone. Was just a bit taken aback and probably projecting my own ways of reacting to things - I'm very impatient so would have much rather lost the 27p (or grabbed three carrier bags for another time!) than waited but I realise that's not the case for anyone and she might already have been having a bad day hence the huffiness. As an aside, anyone know why the carrier bags in Lidl are 9p each whereas 5p everywhere else? Just something I've been pondering while reading responses!

I've been in the position where I couldn't afford to buy bread. Still wouldn't wait for 27p.
