Lighthearted
Ok, i've bought the dye, shall I do it? trying to build up courage

I'm 45, mumsy, quite conservative, frumpy boring not something I would normally do but it's summer and I work term time. I feel like having a blow out and doing something unexpected.
Dh is just raising his eyebrows at me.

Shall I?

I bleached mine the other month and have had it lilac, pink and now have put various pretty colours on it Smile
It has blue and silver in as well but can't see much in the attached picture.
Do it OP!

I am older than you, cleaner and am currently sporting "mermaid" hair in a variety of purples & blues. I love it!

You've all got great hair.
I would love to have shades of purple, one day maybe.
OP, do come back and show us.

When I was a teacher I used to dip dye bleach and then funny colours, and then cut it off before going back to school (my hair grows really quickly so this was not a problem).

Now I'm not a teacher any more it's getting more unicorny by the day.

I can't wait for it to get properly grey as I think grey with purple looks nice.

Purple fades quick. Blue's better.

Do it do it do it DO IT! Grin
Let your DH raise his eyebrows all he likes. If (your words, not mine) you're conservative, frumpy and boring usually then all the more reason to do it! 45 doesn't mean you have to stop doing impulsive things.
If you want to dye your hair, do it for you.

What's it going to look like as its growing out? That's what would put me off

You can get semi permanent ones that wash out after several weeks. Doesn't have to be a full on dye.

If it's wash in wash out it doesn't matter. But, if permanent, consider carefully. Strong colours, such as purple do not shift easily. That's from experience when I had a dark blue based red in my hair. Took great where the new hair was but where the hair had been highlighted previously it washed out so quickly I had hair that was red at the top and dirty pinky browny lower down.
I decided to try and get rid of the red because of this and it took Colour B4 plus two bleachings to get it back to bond.
PS. I did the same thing again (yes I know dumb) some months later, needed to turn it back to blonde, couldn't be bothered to use colour b4 and did 3 bleach applications in a day to remove the red.

Result: whole top layer of hair literally broke off from my head a few cms down. Not a good day. Still growing out that error some months later.

So just consider carefully.

In the last month ive dyed:

  1. my oen hair bright pink
  2. my friends hair not has a bottom laterthats red/pink
  3. a friend of a friends hair mermaid with blues and greens
4)my sons hair blue (i promised him a dantdm look over summer)

Non permanent colour is fun and relatively easy (especially if your lucky enough not to have to bleach first). For me it shows to the world im me and not just this one thing.

I thought purple / pink hair was for single cat-owners.

I'm 48 and frumpy/mumsy but a couple of months ago I dyed my hair 'mystic violet' and I loved it!! Partner not impressed so the next dye was a medium chestnut brown and I hate it. Makes me feel even more old and frumpy. So I've bought another 'mystic violet' and can't wait to re-dye it. So I say DO IT!!!

I'm a head of year. My hair is dark blonde too. I had that purple and blonde highlights streaked through the top part of my hair and it completely purple underneath. I loved it. The pupils loved it. The headteacher never said anything negative but he's not the type to be rude enough to tell a grown woman how she can style her hair. Do it!

Be very careful. I bleached my whole head around september last year, and dyed it purple into blue into turqouise. it looked AMAZING. I also had pink and orange dye to do it orange to pink to purple afterwards when the first lot washed out. The purple and blue washed out in 2 weeks, but the turquoise wasn't fading very fast. Fast forward 10 MONTHS later, i still have a big patch of the turquoise that despite every effort has still not washed out, despite being the same make of dye as the others. The purple and blue are dark enough to dye over it, but despite buying several more lots of the purple and blue to over dye, the turquoise is still there, shows through quickly, and no amount of washing or specialist shampoos has got it out. Even contacted the company who make it and they had no further advice from what is listed on their website, but to contact a hair dresser. I've tried washing it 3 times a day for 6 months straight, using anti dandruff shampoo, clarifying shampoo, and a special temporary dye fading shampoo. I've tried their "tip" of leaving conditioner on for half an hour after shampooing, then shampooing again after washing the conditioner out, again every single day for 6 months. I also tried one of those fashion hair colour remover products, did absolutely nothing. My options are cut it out, which i cant/won't do as on the lower sections of my hair it was up to the roots, and i have a very fat/round face that does NOT suit short hair, or bleach it out. I have not yet tried bleaching it out as i had an issue a few years back where i bleached my hair roughly 4 times and it ended up over processed and falling out in chunks, i've only just got it back to all roughly one length without very short patches that were being hidden by my hair having to be tied up , and i can feel how dry the bleached parts are. I'm not risking bleaching, especially as it took bleaching the new growth twice to get it light enough to use these dyes. So i'm stuck with 5 inch brunette roots, brassy orangey blonde bleached lengths, and a big patch down just the right side of my head where it is varying faded shades of turquoise. The brand i used was Directions. Choose your dye wisely.

Mine is currently lilac. Find even the permanent stuff doesn't last long at all. Mine goes kind of blonde/pink as it's fading which is nice but it's back to blonde within 10 days normally

Go to a swimming pool if you're eager to get rid of colour. The chlorine gets rid of most of it as i sadly discovered last year.

Yay! Looks awesome! FWIW, my DH wasn't sure at when I mentioned what I was going to do but absolutely loves my hair!

View jealous of those in schools where whacky hair is allowed in term time too!
