@ilangoldenberg

  1. No one is talking about the big winner of past few weeks - Steve Bannon. His mission was to blow everything up. It's happening
  2. Rumours that "Globalists" like Tillerson & McMaster on the verge of resigning
  3. Tillerson furious over Bannon's role in Iran deal policy
  4. McMaster's Afghanistan review undercut by Bannon and rejected by Trump
  5. Meanwhile at home Trump giving political speeches to the Boy Scouts and the military
  6. Republicans are violating every procedural norm in the Senate and on the verge of taking 20-30 million off of healthcare
  7. Trump publicly at war with his attorney general, because he wouldn't break the law
  8. And threatening to fire him and through some scheme that ultimately ends up with Mueller fired
  9. And finally Bannon's chief rival Jared Kushner has been spending the week mired in the Russia mess
10. A mess Bannon has managed to avoid 11. If your objective is to just bring everything down in chaos, you could not imagine a better situation 12. And that is precisely Bannon's objective 13. And all of this with no public press on Bannon whatsoever, which might draw the ire of his boss 14. Hard to argue he's. It the big winner of the past few weeks. Pretty much since Trump's withdrawal from Paris

Objectives remarkably similar to those of Russian government.

Dumdedumdedum · 26/07/2017 08:23

Lweji, I hesitate to ask (or to read your answer) - what are you surprised they haven't done yet that would be worse than what has happened so far?
I've come to the conclusion that Trump should be locked up on the basis of his Tweets alone. And the nepotism, how on earth can the GOP countenance that? Oh, I'm sorry, I know this has all been discussed before, but I've just had a bit of potentially bad news (which might turn out all right if I'm lucky) and am concentrating on stuff which is completely beyond my control (and ken) to distract myself Grin

Lweji · 26/07/2017 08:26

Think of a clever Trump who'd not contradict himself and didn't tweet about banning a religion. Or a more savvy person who already got the don't care health act to pass with hardly any discussion in the media.

GingerPCatt · 26/07/2017 08:29

For me the danger of trump was obvious but I am very disappointed with the GOP. As a lifelong dem I am usually opposed to their politics, but I'm shocked at how they have put party over country. I thought they would be strong enough to temper trump a bit and keep him in check but they appear to lack the big girl pants to do that. I am really wondering what their line in the sand will be? Trump kissing Putin on Fox News?

PerkingFaintly · 26/07/2017 09:07

Flowers Dumdedum.

lionheart · 26/07/2017 09:30

Dumdedum Flowers

I think this is why hopes are pinned on 2018 and on Mueller (both under threat).

And the sheer, unadulterated fuckwittery of the President.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 26/07/2017 09:39

Their line in the sand? Some people speculate that it would be when Trump starts hurting them politically ie. If the mid terms are a disaster.

Perhaps there is more to come on Trump? There are rumblings about the WP holding back a huge scoop on him. Even if it's true, and we can only hope, it may still not be enough.

I'm sure I saw a single poll yesterday that had his approval ratings down at 36% but I didn't take much note of it given all the other shenanigans.

Anyway, what I've posted has been noted many times at different points and different posters on these threads.

Nothing shifts either him or the GOP. He seems untouchable.

Dumdedumdedum · 26/07/2017 10:11

Thank you kindly for the Flowers - I have actually done something positive to find out where I stand (it's a financial thing) and after research, I find the bad news isn't nearly as bad as I had thought, so all good here Grin
I missed any mention of the American Psychoanalytic Association's decision not to abide by the Goldwater rule any longer, for the purpose of Trump. Wonder if he'll carry on being Teflon now?
Trump's Mental Health

Dumdedumdedum · 26/07/2017 10:24

Again, apologies if I missed it and this is a repeat - I found Dan Rather's latest FB thoughts profoundly sad and moving.

"Donald Trump's speech last night in front of the Boy Scouts of America was not only highly inappropriate. It was disgusting.

I would like to hope it is a nadir in our country's political discourse, but it seems like the slide downward only accelerates. So it stands as a sad encapsulation of our current age.

No doubt many in the crowd were riled up by Mr. Trump's stale rhetoric of "fake news" and lies about his "massive" electoral victory. But the Boy Scouts is a diverse organization with chapters in every corner of this nation. And today, many are no doubt wondering whether they belong in a group that is supposed to be built on community and service. Many of these boys may be wondering more broadly whether they belong in a country led by a man like this.

Scouts learn the importance of being “trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.” How few of those adjectives apply to our current Commander in Chief. A man who can't control himself to act in a manner befitting the setting, is a man without the steadiness of character to run a nation. A grown man who is so insecure as to seek affirmation in a group of teenagers is not a man with the maturity to lead a nation. A man who is so self-absorbed as to make every utterance about himself and his needs is not a man with the vision to elevate a nation.

Part of being president is to be the leader of the entire country. And every president I can remember (and that's a lot of them) revelled in moments when they had a venue to shake off the partisanship of Washington and speak in exalted tones to the people. But whether it's dedicating an aircraft carrier or talking to Boy Scouts, Mr. Trump so far has seemed incapable of performing that simple task.

Bluntly put - and there is no joy in having to say this – he is tearing apart the norms of our nation. So it is incumbent on those who recognize the damage being done to stitch back the bonds that unite us and work hard to muffle the echoes of his divisiveness."

Gumpendorf · 26/07/2017 11:03

Nothing shifts either him or the GOP. He seems untouchable.

Set. That's so true and very depressing.Sad

I've never been able to work out where John McCain stands on anything really. He's got a stellar reputation and is capable of incisive analysis and yet he folds so often. His 2008 campaign being a non Trump example. He ruined his chances by not standing up to the tea party and having Sarah Palin as his running mate.

So I suppose it's not surprising that his rhetoric and actions don't match up under Republican pressure on Trumpcare. But .... Confused

Dumdedum. Flowers I'm glad you feel more positive about stuff. I can empathise with your reactions. Smile

Roussette · 26/07/2017 11:18

I mean, yes, I saw those warnings and I usually have a good imagination, but I really, honestly, didn't comprehend the utter havoc that Trump combined with the GOP could wreak. It is still beyond me. As are those who still support them

Firstly Dumdedum I do hope you get things sorted.

But quoting your post, I had an awful feeling when arguing with the likes of Claig pre-election (who remembers him/her?) that it might not go the right way come the election. At that point I talked of cult like politics which he/she took great exception to, but that has been proved.

However, it is far far worse than I could've imagined, the mindset of the GOP. How on earth do they live with themselves?

Love that FB post from Dan Rather - he did a brilliant one a while back too, hitting the nail on the head.

lionheart · 26/07/2017 11:21

I wonder what will be left of the GOP once this is over.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 26/07/2017 11:39

Dan Rather is absolutely right. Very, very disturbing.

Interesting piece in politoco about the last two days.

I'm a bit confused as to what actually happened with the vote about healthcare, has the ACA been repealed or what...? Confused

Gumpendorf · 26/07/2017 11:50

Yup Rousette, I remember claig and a couple of others who seemed to work in shiftsWink. Trump was a corporate god saviour and Clinton was an evil warmongerer. Some of you (Lweji too iirc) had much more patience than me. Smile

cozietoesie · 26/07/2017 11:53

Stay calm, Set. Muster that resolve. Smile

Gumpendorf · 26/07/2017 11:58

Thanks, Set, the Politico article is fascinating and ...depressing Shock

The spawn of Norman Vincent Pealee^ and Roy Cohnn^, Trump has stomped through life armed with the obstinate, self-centered tenets of optimistic thinking and the sneering, deep-seated lessons of attack, attack, attack. He creates chaos, and then he responds to that chaos, withstanding it, even embracing it, feeding on it—and then he outlasts the outrage, emerging not only alive but emboldened.

"He’s spent his life creating and surrounding himself with chaos,” Res said, “so that he can be the one person who can emerge in charge. The winner. The guy on the top. It’s a way of slaying his enemies.”

If you’ve ever been on a construction site, they’re always chaotic,” Billy Procida, another former Trump Organization vice president, told me Tuesday. “And he’s good at construction.”

But he’s no longer on a construction site. He’s the most powerful person in the world.
This is certainly different. It’s certainly new,” Nunberg said. “But it’s what people want.”
Chaos? All the time?

Entertainment,” Nunberg said. “Entertainment.”

Senator @lisamurkowski of the Great State of Alaska really let the Republicans, and our country, down yesterday. Too bad!

I wonder how Melania's cyber bullying campaign is going? Her husband is good at bullying women via Twitter and interesting he didn't mention the other NO vote republican. I wonder why. Oh yes, it's a man.

cozietoesie · 26/07/2017 13:30

Mr O'Donnell discusses a return to 'regular order'. Some of you may find this interesting - especially if you watch to the end of the piece.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 26/07/2017 14:28

cozie, thank you for that Lawrence O'Donnell clip. It has cleared up most of the questions I had last night. Brilliantly explained by O'Donnell, perhaps Trump could try watching it.

Trump' s comments about the vote are beyond words. He seems to revel in his ignorance.

I thought the comment about the possibility of a recess appointment was interesting. Al Franken and Nicole Wallace have both spoken out against it this morning, using strong language to denounce it (constitutional crisis was mentioned ).

However I don't suppose that will worry 45. Nobody seems able to exert any kind of control or brake on him.

Roussette · 26/07/2017 14:37

The shit is going to hit the fan. Major deflection from Russia here.

It's a deflection from Russia. A big one - but a deflection nonetheless. I'd be interested to know what Mattis's input was.

If he fires Sessions.....................

The man - whatever you may think of him - is well regarded in the GOP. Very well regarded. Even leaving aside the Mueller issue, just acting to remove Sessions is a step too far for him - in my view.
