So much conflicting advice, and I realize it's hardly a huge deal, but just wondered what kind of milk you all give your kids (full fat, semi skimmed, skimmed cows milk or other milks) and why? Also how old they are?

OP posts:
queenofthemountains · 21/07/2017 07:46

Odd one out here as we all have skimmed, kids are 14 and 11, I can't bear the taste of full fat in tea and the kids prefer skimmed. We do have a milkman though!

perhapsiwill · 21/07/2017 08:29

To whoever asked why you wouldn't drink cows milk. Would you drink dog milk? Or cat milk? Would you take babies from their mothers who cry , sometimes for days for their babies, they have instincts just like human mothers

That's why. It's hideous and one day we will look back in shame and disgust at the cruelty, completely unnecessary.

Mulledwine1 · 21/07/2017 08:32

When ds was very small we had three lots of milk in our house - full fat for him, semi for DH, skimmed for me.

I can't remember how old he was when I stopped buying full fat for him but think he was probably 2/3?

We now have semi for DS and DH and skimmed for me. I sometimes buy banana flavoured milk for DS (though there is so much sugar in it, I was shocked) and I think that is full fat but depends on the retailer.

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 21/07/2017 08:33

Dc have either semi-skimmed or full fat depending on who buys it. They are 10 & teen. The 10 year old had full fat only until about a year ago as she needed every calorie she could get (skinny and sporty).

Mulledwine1 · 21/07/2017 08:36

Those of you asking why you'd switch from full fat, I just don't like the taste, it's too creamy. I don't even like semi on cereal, though it's fine in tea and coffee.

Yes we consume a lot less dairy. I do like cheese though. Not only is it a cruel industry it's bad for the environment to have lots of cows - all that methane being released into the atmosphere.

But I can't see anything changing unless people start to take climate change seriously.

Mulledwine1 · 21/07/2017 08:37

Sorry I meant to say we SHOULD consume less dairy.

LaContessaDiPlump · 21/07/2017 09:54

thetruthfairy I find your question amusing considering your username Grin the truth is that the dairy industry is brutal and I refuse to pay into it. I'm vegan; DH and DC eat what they like generally but have all gone off the idea of dairy. I have never watched it but Cowspiracy is said to be an eye opener.

Ohyesiam · 21/07/2017 10:07

Neither of mine ever drank any cows milk, because like me, they hate it. We've done rice, soy, almond, oat, hemp milks, and settled with mostly for milk in tea, and river milk in cereal. Though I do use goat milk for white sauce.

Gemini69 · 21/07/2017 10:11

Ohyesiam I'm going to assume by that statement that your kids have been programmed over a period of years to Dislike milk.... Confused

JustAnotherPoster00 · 21/07/2017 10:15

Indoctrination at its finest

Gold Top when we remember otherwise full fat

SuperBeagle · 21/07/2017 10:17

What is river milk? Confused

tickyandtackyandjackythebacky · 21/07/2017 10:20

Full fat for me dh and dd, full fat goats milk for ds.

PickyParent · 21/07/2017 10:25

Skimmed UHT milk here, two teens and two adults. One teen eats cereal and prefers the taste of skimmed. DH and I prefer skimmed in our tea. Other teen only has milky hot choc and can't tell the difference in milks. I've been drinking skimmed since I was about 10 and anything fattier makes me gag now. Not particularly worried about the lactose content, it's all about the taste and mouthfeel.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 21/07/2017 10:27

Full fat, he's almost six

BoredOnMatLeave · 21/07/2017 10:43

Full fat for DP and DD (1 yo), I have skimmed and would rather full fat but hate the taste, it tastes like cream to me.

BitchQueen90 · 21/07/2017 11:09

Full fat for both me and 4yo DS although DS doesn't drink a lot of milk these days. He has it on cereal and occasionally as a drink.

Everything else is too watery for my taste. Soy milk is vile.

Percivalandproud · 21/07/2017 11:31

Full fat for DC 7 - 15
Skimmed for DH and me, we only have it in tea
Always organic, like a PP the only organic product I insist upon after watching documentary about the dairy industry

sialru · 21/07/2017 11:33

Cows' milk is for calves and has no nutritional benefit for humans that cannot easily be derived elsewhere. Aside from all the well documented animal cruelty involved with dairy farming, it is bad for the environment and bad for the consumer. It is full of antibiotics, somatic cells (pus) and bovine sex hormones. What's wrong with soya milk, almond milk, hazelnut milk, coconut milk etc etc etc? Did you know that we are the only species that continues to drink milk beyond weaning? Think about that.

EB123 · 21/07/2017 11:35

Full fat for my boys. We go through loads of the stuff as they love it and drink around a pint a day each at 1, 4 and 6.

I have semi skimmed.

Babymamaroon · 21/07/2017 12:03

Full fat organic here. Organic is non-nego. We don't drink tons though and just use for cereal and tea etc.

MimsyFluff · 21/07/2017 12:36

Whole milk here 3 year old has about 4 glasses a day, 7 year old two and my 8 year old will have about 3 a week. The mostly drink water but sometimes they are allowed fizzy drinks when out about once a month will be about twice in the holidays they also have a yoghurt drink once a day.

We started out on goats milk but the DC don't like it anymore so it's mostly the Ddogs that drink it

Misty9 · 21/07/2017 12:43

I drink soya as I'm lactose intolerant but I thought that was really bad for the environment as trees are cut down to farm soy beans?

perhapsiwill · 21/07/2017 12:48

They are cut down for soy but the vast amount of soy is produced for animal feed. A small amount is consumed directly by humans.

Misty9 · 21/07/2017 12:50

Ah I feel less guilty now, thank you perhaps

Gileswithachainsaw · 21/07/2017 12:51

Koko coconut milk.

Neither like milk or drink milk I hate it too we don't have it in the house

It works well enough for pancakes and we don't do creamy sauces anyway.
